This is a solid fantasy novel appropriate for kids as young as 7 or 8 and as old as 13 or 14. Alternating points of view between the two siblings, Agatha and Malcolm, is an effective storytelling technique, and the threads of both storylines weave together nicely to keep the plot moving forward at a nice pace. There are quite a few different species of magical creatures in the book, which help to flesh out the setting, and whose introductions help to mark the characters' progress on their quest to reunite and reclaim their home. The appealing illustrations also help to immerse the reader in the world of the story and to reinforce the importance of nature and animals to both Agatha and Malcolm. For kids who are new to fantasy or who have not yet tackled many novels, this will be a great book with which to begin. I, most reluctant of fantasy readers, finished it in just two days, and found it engaging and easy to read. (Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from a friend who knows the author.)
If you are a lover of fantasy and magic, this series will not disappoint.
When twins, Agatha and Malcolm, are separated by an evil sorcerer, it will take a lot of courage and a little magic to get them back together. Talking animals, evil grassmen, and helpful travelers weave their way seamlessly through the book, to create a world that is both dangerous and exciting!
This is a middle grade book, that would be great for younger readers at a higher level, or reluctant readers at a lower level because it appeals to all.
