Audrey Harrison was born about two hundred years too late. She wants to belong to a time when men were men and women were dressed in gowns and could float, simper and sigh.

In the real world she has always longed to write, writing a full manuscript when she was fourteen years old. Work, marriage and children got in the way as they do and it was only when an event at work landed her in hospital that she decided to take stock. One Voluntary Redundancy later, she found that the words and characters came to the forefront and the writing began in earnest.

Her ideal would be to write Regency Romances, but more modern characters are insisting on being heard, hence the release of’ ‘A Very Modern Lord’, a contemporary romance.

So, although at home more these days, the housework is still neglected and tea is still late on the table, but she has an understanding family, who usually shake their heads at her and sigh. That is a sign of understanding, isn’t it?

This is such a lovely idea! Who wouldn’t want to be picked up after a difficult year and offered the chance to go back to the Regency era for a couple of weeks? With money, servants, accommodation - everything provided. Even a fairy godmother. Who could fail to be healed and comforted by the gentle manners of two hundred years ago? But for Catherine, it doesn’t quite work out as expected.

And that pretty much summarises this book, too. What should be a delightful escapist read turns out to be… well, rather dull. The modern-day part of the story just didn’t capture my interest and the Regency part was not much more than a run-down of Regency life in Bath. Now, the details were fascinating, and a salutary reminder that, however romantic the Regency seems when it’s got Colin Firth in it, in reality that part of history was really pretty unpleasant. The clothes were uncomfortable, the food was barely edible and the perfect manners concealed a great deal of misbehaviour. And then there’s the healthcare…

But while the author’s research has obviously been pretty thorough, the rest of the book is less up to snuff. The characters are either very good or totally villainous, and it’s not difficult to spot which is which. I’d have liked either heroine Catherine or hero Chris to display something less than goody-two-shoes virtue, which gets a bit tedious after a while. And the inevitable misunderstanding between them is horribly cliched. Then there’s a plot twist at the end which felt utterly contrived.

Now, if this sounds very critical, I did actually enjoy the story quite a bit. It’s a gentle, easy read with two pleasant main characters and a resounding HEA. My only problem with it is that it’s not a Regency romance, it’s really a contemporary romance with a portal element, and if that’s your thing, you might well enjoy it more than I did. But it wasn’t really my cup of tea, so that keeps it to three stars.

I really love time travel romances set in the Regency period so I was thrilled to see one of my favourite authors dipping into this sub-genre.

I thought it was fantastic that she put a twist in her time travel story. Where this book differs from other Regency time travel stories is the possibility for her characters to freely travel back and forth between the Regency period and the present day. I liked that Catherine didn't have to leave her friends and family behind permanently in order to have a grand, romantic adventure in Regency Bath.

There is plenty of excitement and drama as Catherine soon finds herself caught up in the affairs of new friends and the target of a fortune hunter. I loved the characters that populated Regency Bath.
I thought Catherine and Chris made a lovely couple and I really felt for them when things took a dramatic and emotional turn when their time in the Regency period came to an end. The conclusion to their story was very romantic and it left me with a smile on my face.

A very enjoyable and highly recommended read.

An interesting and a bit of an unusual twist on a time travel story. With travel back and forth between the two time periods, mystery, jealousy, misunderstandings, ruthless people and some cozy romance, this audiobook is an easy listening, enjoyable story with a few twists and some nice details of Regency times. Melanie Fraser’s (narrator of the audiobook) smooth British accent fit the story perfectly, especially since it was set in Bath, England. She gave the characters individual voices, kept the story moving forward at just the right pace and really contributed to the enjoyment of the story. An entertaining story with potential for a follow-up book.

A jewel of a story, this is a time travel romance with a difference. This one's not about going back in time to find a bare-chested highlander to love. Instead this one is about realising that a man can be honorable and a gentleman no matter what age he is born into; it is about knowing that love is about hardwork and being steadfast.

I so loved Chris, the gentle if troubled hero and sweet Catherine who's belief in love is shaken by a cad of a husband.

There is a sly vein of humor that runs through the book, where the author smiles with the reader at the inconvenient differences between the modern and regency times.

I read this at a stretch, without putting it down. That is the best recommendation I can give a book.

Return To The Regency, by Audrey Harrison.
This is a delightful time-travel novel, full of wit, humor, empathy, and pathos. But what else would you expect from Audrey Harrison, one of the most brilliant Regency novelists of the genre?

The story is simplicity itself. Catherine, a divorced woman with two teenage children, is a devoted Regency buff who is “chosen” to return to the Regency circa 1811 when she visits Bath for the Christmas market. There is a counter-story here because Catherine's husband is determined to steal her children from her by offering them offers of opportunities they can't refuse. It neatly counterbalances the Regency events.

And thereby hangs the tale. Aided(?) by a seemingly powerless fairy godmother she falls for a handsome gentleman, Christopher Dobson, who is himself suffering from a bitter marriage breakup. Turns out he, too, is a time-traveler.

Enter the villain, the handsome but crooked Mr. Chorlton and the story takes off. He is a penniless rake who discovers Catherine is worth four thousand pounds a year and determines to marry her. He nearly succeeds but is discovered and thwarted by Chris.

The story is much more complicated than that, but It gives a great picture of Regency times, and how different they were from our own. One of the things that's very different is personal hygiene, and Harrison makes us understand that attending a Regency ball was very like submersing oneself in body odor smothered by perfume. Ugh!

It's a wonderful love story, but not without its moments of agony when Chris becomes trapped in the Regency period and neither Catherine nor Catherine's erstwhile fairy godmother can do anything about it. If nothing else, the story destroys the myth of the efficacy of fairy godmothers. Seems they're as suffocated by bureaucracy as the rest of us.

I love Audrey Harrison's books and 'Return to Recency' was no different.
What a wonderful story and 2 main characters, who found love in the oddest of ways. The story as usual is well written and the 3 supporting characters were also very sweet, with a usual 'baddie' thrown in for good measure.
Audrey Harrison's books always have a 'sad' part and the main characters never have an easy time of it, and so when Chris became trapped in time my heart went out to both main characters but more so Chris as it must have been so difficult for him, but the eventually found their deserved H.E.A.
I particularly enjoyed the epilogue as titled up loose ends and it was nice to see Catherine's husband got his comeuppance.
I would recommend this book highly.

Wow! This is an amazing story by Audrey Harrison. It is totally different to what I have read or listened to in her other books but as usual it is well written and cleverly put together.
This one has a modern day beginning, time travel to 200 years ago and landing up in a fantastic adventure and love story that captivated me and had me engrossed virtually non-stop the whole of today.
If you want a great story then this is it!
Of course, the narration by Melanie Fraser is spot on. She really is a very talented Voice Actress and it is always a pleasure to listen to her works.
I voluntarily listened to a free copy of the audiobook version and this is my unbiased review.

Time travel meets It's a wonderful life.

In this recency tale there are fairy god-people instead of Clarence the angel in training. But there is the bad guy trying to fool everyone and good people trying to come to the rescue. It's a story well and cleverly told and I enjoyed it to the end .

Return to the Regency

Catherine went to Bath for a holiday and met her fairy godmother that let her visit the past to find her regency hero. Mr. Dobson was also visiting from the future. They fell for each other but Mr. Dobson didn’t get back to the future in time and stuck into the past for two years.

Unusual time travel story and unique love story. Catherine is haveing a hard time with an ex-husband and her mother dying. She takes a chance on going to another time and ends up in Regency Bath. Chris takes this journey also and they hit it off in both times. I loved the way they could travel between the time periods if they were careful.
Lovely story.

Fantastic

A Regency Time Travel Romance which gives you a glimpse of what it would be like to go back and forth in time with no financial worries. Fairy godparents indeed. Well constructed storyline and very well written with creative characters. I enjoyed this book. Highly recommend.

Such an interesting idea for a novel!

I just wish that everything hadn’t been said “with feeling”. That phrase was seriously overused. I don’t know. I liked it, but not a ton. 🤷‍♀️

Catherine wishes the last year never happened. After losing her mother and her marriage in quick succession, each day is a brand new struggle. When her ex-husband drags her kids halfway across the world, she visits the Bath Christmas Market, just hoping to put something good in her life. She never expected find a gateway to the past...

Katherine used to visit Bath, England with her mother, but when her mother died and her marriage fell apart, Katherine didn’t return. But when her ex and his new love interest take her children on a trip, Katherine decides to give Bath another try. Once there, just in time for the Christmas Market, she discovers that she’s been granted a chance to go back in time and visit the Regency. In Bath, she meets a man, Chris, who also has the ability to visit the past. They form a fast friendship. While in the nineteenth century, Katherine finds herself the target of a fortune hunter who thinks she’s wealthy. She and Chris join forces to undermine the man’s attempt to force Katherine into marriage. What follows kept me listening.

This book is interesting, it’s a bit of a mystery and is filled with lovely details of Regency times and humor. There are some twists and turns, and it wouldn’t be much of a Regency without a touch of romance, but that’s not a problem as there is a nice dollop of fluffy stuff worked into the book. The secondary characters are an agreeable addition and add to the tale. Readers do need to suspend disbelief at times, especially when it appears that the characters can go back and forth between the two time periods, and move physical objects between them, with no problem.

The narration was first-rate. I’ve listened to several books by Melanie Fraser, and she never fails to present an excellent performance. On those rare occasions where the story lags just a little, the narration picked things up and kept me listening.

Now, to the one thing that annoyed me in this audio book: dialogue tags; there are far too many of them. For some reason, Audible won’t let me go back and listen to the clips I bookmarked in this book, but I was able to find a couple of examples. In a conversation that would cover between one-quarter to one-half of a page in a print book, these are the tags:

Susan persisted
Katherine said quietly
Susan said
Katherine admitted
Katherine smiled
Susan said
Katherine asked
Susan admitted
Katherine suggested with a laugh

In another scene, about the same length:

Susan asked
Katherine said, chewing her lip
Katherine asked
Susan answered, unhelpfully

For such short discussions, those are a lot of dialogue tags. Some tighter editing would have helped avoid this.

Still, I enjoyed this book and listened to it happily as I walked and cooked. If you enjoy books that take place during the Regency, chances are that you will enjoy this one, too.

I received this book as a gift from the narrator. Her generosity had no influence on the opinions I express in this review. Those opinion are my honest response to this audio book.

I received the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I read Barbra Erskine and Diana Gabaldon, so I guess I'm a fan of time travel romance. I really liked the time travel aspect of Outlander - through the stones - and if I remember Erskine's writing correctly, it wasn't so much time travel per se, as it was a trance-like vivid recall of past lives.

Now, this book does neither, and I'm not sure what to make of the plot twist used. I'm fine with the main character going back in time; and even the fact that she can walk back and forth through time any time she wants (with exceptions which are mentioned in the book). I find the author's approach to the time travel more in line with It's A Wonderful Life (with a twist).

Catherine is a recently divorced woman with two nearly grown kids. The father wants to uproot the kids and move them to New Zealand with his new wife and family, so Catherine is having a bit of a stressful time in her life. Add to that the death of her mother around the same time as her marriage falling apart, and you can understand her desire to get away from things. She travels to Bath to the Christmas Market there. She had planned on going with her children, but the father had offered them a trip to Lapland and she had encouraged them to go and have the experience, especially if the father was emigrating soon after that, with or without the children.

In Bath she meets a man staying at the same hotel she is. It wouldn't be a romance without a bit of a romance, right!?! While wandering around Bath prior to taking in the Christmas Market, she wanders into the Jane Austen Museum, being a great fan of her works and the time period.

Now, I won't spoil the twist with the time travel bit.

This ends up being a somewhat typical romance novel; misunderstandings, jealousy, hurt feelings, ruthless people. But there is still a twist or two before the ending.

I quite enjoyed this novel. Humour, intrigue, twists to the plot. As always, Melanie Fraser does an excellent narration. Lovely voice, great changes in voice for different characters.

Return to the Regency by Audrey Harrison is a time-travel historical romance set during the Regency period and the Napoleonic Wars. While the romance in this book is subtle, there are multiple scenes with affection, adventure, and near-death experiences for our heroes.

The story begins with recently divorced Catherine who is still in shock from the abrupt end to her marriage and the death of her mother. When her ex-husband takes her two teenaged children on holiday, she visits the Bath Christmas Market in homage to the memory of her mother. While in Bath Catherine finds a fairy godmother and a gateway to the Regency period. After traveling back in time 200 years to Regency Bath, Catherine is surprised to find Chris - another contemporary guest who is also recovering from a divorce. The rest of the story involves Catherine escaping the machinations of a fortune hunter, and Chris escaping the clutches of death.

Melanie Fraser did a fantastic job narrating this audiobook. She really brought the characters to life, giving each character their own distinct voice. Melanie's crisp British accent and soft refined tones were perfect for this audio and really contributed to my enjoyment of this book. I look forward to listening to other audiobooks narrated by Melanie.

Ugh. I stuck with it til the end, but this was so contrived and silly. I really enjoyed Audrey Harrison’s other Regency romances, so I thought I might like this - nope.
