Rate this book

The unforgettable story of a young English lady and the warrior who saves her from sure death, a woman and a man from different worlds, two bold hearts who find passion in a divided land and swear to love each other forever.

“I am so in love with her books every spare minute has been spent reading them since I found the first one! 3 books in and it's this one that is my favorite so far, I love The Raven!”—Melody Banks

Raven watches with his younger brother Takooko through the trees near the Susquehanna River as the enemy Mohawk war party heads north in several canoes with their captive, the white girl with the fire hair, paddling hard in the last canoe. The two Lenni-Lenape warriors have been tracking the Mohawk war party for hours to make sure they will not turn back and attack again. Lady Tess Morgan, the captive in the canoe, tries hard to put out of her mind how these savages attacked her carriage, kidnapped her and her cousin Joselyn, and tortured and murdered poor Joselyn. When we get to the bend in the river I’ll make my move. Watching her from the far bank of the river, Raven chuckles, “I think she will jump, brother.” He cocks the trigger of his most prized possession, an English Brown Bess musket, and takes aim. “It will be fun to teach these dogs a lesson.”

“Really enjoyed this book! First one I have read by this author. Will most definitely read more. She had me captivated since the start, and it only got better as each page I turned. I am a big Indian Romance non fiction reader and really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of her books.”—Linda Motes, Kindle edition verified purchase

“This book shows how love and determination conquers all! Raven and Tess were two strong characters that fought for each other and saved each other at different times. They refused to give up on their love. I also enjoyed and admired Raven's mother Dream Women. She was willing to fight and love a much older man no matter what others said. Would recommend this book.”—Avery, Kindle edition

Tess Morgan and her spoiled cousin Jocelyn were taken captive by the Mohawk Indians near their Annapolis Maryland home in the American colonies in 1758. Jocelyn was tortured and killed when she refused to walk any further in the wilderness, but Tess is a survivor so she obeys her captors and looks for a chance to escape. She sees her chance during a canoe trip across a river. She smacks one of her captors on the head with a paddle and jumps into the river.

Raven, a Lenape Indian, and his brother Takooko are watching from the riverbank when Tess makes her escape attempt. Raven decides to help her because he admires her bravery. Raven and Takooko help her escape into the forest after they convince her they aren't going to harm her. Raven is very gentle with Tess and promises to take her back to Annapolis since it's near his village. During the trip back, they see a group of white men looking for Tess, who calls out to them when she recognizes her fiancee, Myron. The white men shoot at Raven and Takooko, thinking they are her abductors. Takooko is killed in the firefight, so Raven abducts Tess in retaliation. He blames her for his brother's death so he decides she belongs to him now.

Raven takes Tess against her will to his Lenape village. He is no longer the gentle man she first met, he is angry and grieving. Once in the village, Raven's mother takes her in because she doesn't blame Tess at all, neither does the other Lenape who treat Tess with kindness. Raven refuses to listen to his mother, insisting that Tess will stay with him despite Tess's pleas to go home. Tess is a strong, intelligent woman who finds a way to escape the village after a few days. She needs to get back home so she can marry Myron, a man she doesn't really care for but sees as an able provider, and send for her deaf younger sister as she promised when she left England for her uncle's home in the colonies. Tess is also scared of her growing acceptance of the Lenape and her feelings for Raven, so she sees escape as the only option. Raven catches up to her and brings her back to his village, where he gets her to promise to be his wife for a year and he will free her afterwards.

Raven fights his feelings for Tess because she is a white woman and he wants to be war chief of his people, but he does everything he can to keep her with him because he can't imagine letting her go. Tess also tries to deny her feelings because she cannot imagine living in an Indian village and she knows she needs to leave so she can send for her sister. Outside forces intruded on the couple as well, with the French trying to get the Lenape to fight for them and the English getting closer to the tribal village all the time. Raven and Tess go through a lot of trials together which draws them closer and shows them how much they love each other.

I really enjoyed this book, it was full of adventure and action. The writing was very good and full of historical details. The characters were very well drawn and had depth. The romance was believable, Raven and Tess battle with emotions and difficulties that seem very believable for their situation but they are able to find common ground in their love and respect for each other. I like the fact that part of the story centered on Braddock's march to Fort Dusquesne, which is interesting to me because I live in Pittsburgh right where it happened, though the author said the year was 1758 when the march actually happened in 1755.

Overall, I enjoyed the romance and the exciting story. The setting is very interesting and unusual, while the writing is a cut above the normal Native American/colonial romance.

It's never a good thing to have to say this, but man, this story just dragged on and ON.

At first, I was really into it, and even up until the end I have to congratulate the author on a very strong heroine--the type who doesn't wait to be saved, but who saves herself--but other than that, the story was unfortunately quite lacking.

Like...the only way I can put this is that basically the conflicts dragged on longer than they had to, and just when you'd think that something was over and done with, the author would find some way to extend it by bringing forth more conflicts. After a while, on my own reading agenda I was just ready for the HEA to finally happen, and when it didn't and I saw that I still had 100 more pages to go or something, I just got irked.

So, fine writing, and good characters, but not enough to ultimately capture my interest for the entire length of the story.

Good read with plenty of action and romance. He takes her as his captive blaming her for his brother's death. She becomes part of his Lenape tribe and eventually they marry so he can achieve his goal of War Chief. This does not happen until later when tragic circumstances changes everything. She is forever trying to get back to her family but when she finally succeeds everything is not what she had expected. HEA.

I must admit this took me by surprise. I find I really enjoy vintages with a Native American theme- this one being tail end at 1994. I started this after coming off of a great series and didn't have overly high hopes, just a palette cleanser. And I haven't read a stand-alone in some time. It started off kind of as one might expect.... a white woman abducted into a Native Village. I read on humming along and found that my appreciation for these characters really truthfully.... snuck right up on me! The H is of course masculine and yet fights his emotional turmoil into wisdom. The h was most definitely a fiery woman, but one who had some rather meager beginnings (which I always kind of like more in a character). The story had some unexpected twists and turns and lots of adventure, which I rather like. I found myself really cheering for these two in the end. The second half of the book ended up being a page turner for me. While not many of the supporting characters were all that deeply developed, I felt the action and interesting plot changes of the story definitely made up for this. I ended up enjoying this book much more than I expected and felt the ending was very satisfying. Closed this with a smile on my face.

As a fan of historical romance, I stumbled on this book by accident. While “Captive” by Collen French is not entirely accurate, it represents a basic picture of what America was like in the 18th century. The book portrays an interesting insight into the wars that were waged not only between invaders from across the sea but also between the native peoples of North America.
Beginning with the Mohawk kidnapping of red-haired Tess and her cousin Jocelyn and their transport along the Susquehanna River, French takes the reader on a journey of war and love, courage and determination.
When Lenape brothers Raven and Takooko see the Mohawk canoes paddling the river they are relieved. The Mohawk were not friends of the Lenape and the brothers can head home to their village and assure the people they are safe from the raiders, at least temporarily However Raven is fascinated by the fire-haired Tess. As the brothers watch Tess dives from the canoe and swims for land, attempting to escape her captors.
What follows is a story of a woman’s determination to return to her people, her fiancé Myron, and to find her cousin Jocelyn who had been left behind by the Mohawk. Raven must come to grips with his growing desire for the young woman he views as strong and courageous. Torn by his guilt over occurrences and his feelings for Tess, his behavior is sometimes cruel.
While living in the Lenape village Tess learns there are great differences between the various native peoples. Soon she comes to love and respect the Lenape and to fall in love with Raven.
This is a sweet and action-filled historical romance. It’s a quick and easy read, with enough passion to keep things heating up nicely. The characters are well developed. The settings could be described a bit more but considering this is a love story about a couple from very different cultures it isn’t vital to the appreciation of the book.

I couldn’t put this down.

Raven is a bit of a temperamental hero - which would normally get on my nerves, but it actually worked for me this time. Tess is a strong heroine who saves herself from multiple would-be rapists, which was VERY refreshing to see.

The mediocre fiancé going on essentially a warpath through every village trying to find her, only to try to rape her AND shoot her once she’s finally dragged back to him? Crazy.

The cruel uncle throwing her into a cellar to dehydrate her to death because he’d jumped the gun and told everyone she was dead? Crazy. And then rallying the townspeople to help him attack the village because “they stole my niece once and now they stole her again”? Even crazier.

The deaf sister actually being dead the whole time? Tragic.

Taande limping out of the smoke when everyone thought he had died in battle a week earlier? I got goosebumps.

Na-kee the seasoned warrior dissolving into a trembling, terrified mess at the start of a battle that HE instigated? Strange.

There was just so much that happened in this that kept me turning the pages. I loved Raven and Tess. I loved this.

Captive (1994) is a really good story which shows how love and determination conquers all. Set in the Maryland colony, 1758… Tess is captured by Mohawks only to be wisked away by the Raven, a Lenape. Early in the book horrific tragedies happen to each of them… which colors their initial feelings for each other.

French deftly intertwines actual history of the era .., the N.A. tribes, the English settlers, the French, and near the end a significant battle of the French and Indian War. The romance sizzles with slow burn then lots of passion. I was never sure how the HEA was going to turn out but it did. Loved the epilogue!! So nice to have one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A few weeks before the outbreak of the war between England and France in America Tess is kidnapped by Mohawks. After she manages to escape she befriends Raven who is a Lanape. He promises to bring her back to her home. But then prejudice and war get in the way.
Well written romance with a lot of things happening in it that keep you reading. Some bedscenes but in small doses. Takes time to explain the political situation of those days - we even see George Washington passing by - and how the whites dealt with women who had been captured by the natives.

A romantic historical love story of Tess Morgan, an English girl, and Raven, a Lenape warrior. When Tess came to America in search of a better life. She found a battle-torn land and an uncle who treated her as a slave. She was kidnapped by the Mohawk Indians from which she escaped only to be caught by Raven.

This is action-packed. The French and American armies fought each other and each had Indian scouts and captives. Tess and Raven are in the middle of everything. It is told on the Indian side of the story. A good read!!

I enjoyed this book, and the author writes in an easy-to-read fashion. I liked that local areas which I know well are mentioned. It seemed a tad unbelievable to me that two women and a little girl could be travelling with the British Army during the battle with General Braddock. The book seemed to drag in parts, but I would definitely read other books written by this author. It did have a bit of a late 80s bodice-ripper feel, but I didn't mind.

Captive

This is another good book by Colleen. I really enjoy her style of writing, it just pulls you into the story from page one. She is very descriptive and find myself imagining being in the forest. Tess goes through a lot during her young life, but she is a survivor. Raven rescues Tess from the Mohawk Indians who kidnapped her and her cousin. Raven takes her home to his village of Lenape, who are honorable people.

DNF at 60%
Historically speaking, the book didn't ring true to me. It didn't feel like a true Native American setting.

As for the main characters, I somewhat liked Raven, but I didn't like Tess at all. She brought only trouble to Raven and his people.

I had to DNF it simply because I didn't care enough for these characters.

I am always looking for a good Native American romance. This may be the one!! It has good and not so good parts. I will start with the good.
This is what is good about this book:
- The romance. The hero and the heroine are the major part of the book. They are in almost every page. The book is well written, and there is great character studies. What the hero and heroine feel is on almost every page!!
- I could tell when the Native Americans spoke their language and when they spoke English.
- The Native Americans in the village were kind, good people, that the heroine wanted to stay was not a surprise - I could not understand why she wanted to leave!!
- The "cougar" mother was great!! I loved her wisdom and her sense of humor!!
This is what I did not like:
-The heroine's speech. She was English, from England, and I could not hear an English accent. She spoke with an American 21st century accent.
- Both hero and heroine were bipolar. At one point they were angry and manic, then they were quiet and depressed - but then they got married and the whole book changed and they changed.
- The mother was Christian, wouldn't the villagers discriminate against her!?!? And she really didn't act Christian. And why didn't she want Raven and Tess to be married by her priest and not the village Shaman.
- The book was too long. There were episodes of violence, though not detailed and were important to tell the story, were too long. Good thing it was well written or I would have been done with it.
- And naming your child "Holly" ?? In 1700?!?
BEST USE OF: An Indian village, deaf children, Mohawks and brothers
ALPHA MALE: 10
SPUNKY HEROINE: 10
CUTE CHILD: 10
SEX: 10
HEA: Oh Yes!!!
PROLOGUE/EPILOGUE: No prologue - but The. Best. Epilogue. Ever.
Rating:
10 - on keeper shelf until the next time I read it to see if I will keep it!!
Heat:
10 - great sexual tension and great sex scenes with some detail, but enough to make them great!!
COVER COVERS IT: 1990's cover - I like 2020 cover better!!!
