Bryn Fortey has been writing short stories and poems since the 1960s, from science fiction to horror and all points in between. His work appeared in seminal anthologies, such as The Fontana Book of Great Horror Stories and New Writings in Horror and the Supernatural. Forty plus years later The Alchemy Press presents Bryn's first collection, a comprehensive array of his best stories and poems. Stand out stories include the two "Shrewhampton" tales that bookend this collection. Merry-Go-Round includes an introduction by Johnny Mains. (Book length: approx 350 pages.)
The introduction describes some of Bryn Fortey's recent tragedies, and how writing stories and poems helped him overcome these. In fact, Fortey was writing in the 1960s and 70s and then became quiescent for several years. Recently he's started writing again -- partly to address the issues mentioned above -- and it's a good thing, too. The writing here is exceptional, with all (well, there is one story I didn't enjoy as much as the others) being tip top. The stories range from SF to fantasy to horror, with a nod to non-classifiable stuff in between. I've rated it five stars -- if I could it would be 4.5.
