Hidden for centuries, determined to live the life of her chosing.
Anastasia is old. Very old. She is much older than either Agatha or the FBI believe she is. The World Council demanded that she present herself for interrogation and she refused. Now she's running for her life. Agatha Blackmore and the entire Magical Division have been tasked with hunting her down and bringing her in. But that presents a problem of it's own. Where does a Vampire run to when half the world is searching for her?
Would her friends be the ones that would have to bring her in, dead or alive? Or could the long-ago promise of a different life be realized?
I was born in 1968 in Mineral Wells, Tx. I have lived all across the country:Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Alaska, and finally Missouri. I have worked as a Disc Jockey, Bookstore manager, Cook, and bowling alley attendant. I have a Telecommunication degree and a Culinary degree. I was a history major before I discovered multimedia. Gardening and cooking is my passion. My wife and I live outside of St Louis, Missouri. I have always been a Huge fan of Science Fiction and fantasy I bring my love of the genre to my writing. I'm a first time writer.
For those who don't know, there are what I'd call Kindle Unlimited fan fiction style writers who pride themselves on being "pansters" (write quickly by the seat of your pants) as opposed to "plotters" (outline plot and details, document , perhaps take more than a few weeks to write your story...). TS. Paul (and Michael Anderle and Merry Ravenell) counts himself a panster.
Within the category of pansters cranking out stories - T.S. Paul isn't bad. There is enough character development (and they behave consistent to their characters across story lines) to care about the characters, there are fewer errors (I haven't yet read one of these named authors without any errors in their books but at least they are few and far between compared to some) and the stories are decent and well thought out.
This installment in The Federal Witch series was not really my cup of tea. I am sorry to say that I found it mostly boring.
The book takes off from where the last one ended which is with Anastasia running away to hide. Off course it falls on Agatha to track her down. As we readers, but very few of the characters in the book, knows Anastasia is not just a “simple” vampire but a Elder. Thus her disappearance is causing some consternation in various different circles and Agatha will not be the only one searching for Agatha. Add the usual vendettas and political machinations and we have ourselves a fine little mess.
So far so good. The problem is that a huge part of the book is spent on Anastasia remembering her previous life. Given that we are talking about a 1000+ year old Elder that is a lot of remembering. Yes, Agatha is searching for Anastasia but the book is really about Anastasia and not about Agatha.
I could live with the book being more about Anastasia than Agatha. I do like the character after all but I did not really like the constant flashbacks and remembering. If the author wanted to tell the story of Anastasia I think it would have been better done as a separate, out of the main series, book.
Of course Agatha finally catches up with Anastasia and some of the separate sub-threads involving the previously mentioned concerned parties are wrapped up in the process. However I found it a bit anticlimactic. It never felt like the grand finale where Anastasia would be revealed as a power not to be trifled with.
I actually felt like skipping ahead at times when reading the book. Not at all my cup of tea I am afraid.
I really enjoy this series - it's not intense at all, yet still has enough action to keep me entertained for a few hours at a time. It's not particularly deep thinking, but who needs that all the time anyway?!
This book was more about Anastasia, the vampire Elder of the supernatural FBI team, than it was Agatha, the witch and leader of the team, but I really liked the change up on MC this time round. Ana, having been summoned by the World Council and one of the vampire leaders in it in the previous book, is now on the run. Agatha and her team have been assigned to find her, but they are not the only ones hunting for her. They just have to find her first! And Ana, being a few thousand years old, has plenty of plans and experience in hiding when she doesn't want to be found!
I really liked the background flashbacks of various points in Ana's life - it definitely gave more depth to her and why she was always so secretive with her powers and personal history before. Of course, not every secret has been revealed and I am hoping we get to find out more about her in the rest of this series.
Still a very enjoyable series alhough I took a star (*) away due to missing content regarding Agatha's increased abilities, where and how did these manifest. If they are in any of the other Federal Witch books, which ones, as I have them all and do not recall the events.
As I didnot enjoy Standard of Honor #1, I have not bothered with the Familiar Magic series. Hopefully it is not in one of those.
TS Paul : Please include a chronological reading list of the books (at the end of the books) to ensure that any gaps in the storylines are filled. Nothing more annoying when you are left wondering "WTF happened and when".
No one knows Anastasia 's real name or where she is from. It's driving the Vampires crazy. When she is ordered to report to World Species Council she runs instead and her own team from the FBI, Magical Crimes Unit, is sent to bring her inn, dead or alive!! She has to decide what to do when they find her, (fight or flight), fight and possibly kill her friends or give up her her freedom to be a Leader in Vampire society. What will she decide? No one knows!! This alternative history/universe is full of paranormal, mystery, mythical creatures, with a sense of humor thrown in for good measure. Highly.
This story exceeded expectation especially since the direction of the story arc(s)? Has wandered all over the map of late. We went to Russia, then to Familiar land and through a few recipes and now finally back to the Federal Witch... given all that, I was clearly thrilled to read this story which gives direction to next part of the arc... I really enjoyed the ancient history of the world and the story itself was really good. So read the thing and let’s roll without further digressions....
Anastasia's story was interesting and also scary and sad at times. Her father was hard on her, but his lessons made her strong enough to survive and thrive. Finding out the ties between her and Agatha was informative and cleared up some questions I had. Hopefully, the deal she made works out. It probably should, as long as the male vampires can let go of some of their chauvinism (which would be the healthiest route for them, I'm thinking lol).
I found the story really interesting, but right from the start I found it irritating that the vampire member on the world council commands that Anastasia has to be found and everybody including the FBI have to ‘jump to it’ and do as he demands, why?
The story uses numerous flashbacks to tell Anastasia’s history, I could put up with this, but the author also drops in little snippets about dragons, demons and the Brotherhood of the Hammer, which have nothing really to do with this story. The end result is quite a ‘bitty’ book that doesn’t flow well. However, it was still an enjoyable read.
It’s been a while since I read the prior books in the series, so my only complaint is that there were a lot of references in the beginning of this book to prior activities that couldn’t stand alone, unless you have a very, very good memory. That aside, this episode filled in a nice chunk of character background for me, and I look forward to the next book very soon.
I really dislike series that change the protagonist. I'm fine with the subject of this book being a supporting character in the series, but honestly, I don't really care enough about them to sit through an entire novel's worth of their backstory. I ended up skipping over the vast majority of it, which means this was about 30% of a novel for me (if that). I only suffered through it for continuity, to continue the series.
Stayed up all night reading ,just couldn't put it down. Its rare when an author can take a character you disliked in a series and by the end of the book had you cheering in her corner! Great mix of history and present time, not at all what I was expecting but so much more!!
Each story is different and I think that is why I enjoy them so much. So now I am waiting for the next one. I especially like the small unicorn. He is such a character. I love paranormal stories that have good and bad characters in them. I don't care much for romance stories. Thanks
I found this book to be better than expected. Anna's background was superb and fulfilling in the sense of answering a lot of questions. Knowing only one other person, my younger son, interested in this type of stories, I have already made him aware of the series and will definitely recommend this book.
I don't care what the other kids say ... You Rock! I look forward to more of this series, I just can't put it down. To top it off, you brought us more into Anastaisa's world. Wow, that was really well done on the history. I'm a Art History buff, and I could visualize the art while reading. (Yes, even my family think I'm crazy). Keep them coming Mr. Paul, I'm hungry for more.
This is the 6th book in the series and I was hoping that by now the quality of editing would improve. Homonym errors and comma splices are thick enough in some scenes to impede the flow of the story as I had to pause and mentally correct the errors so that I could understand the meaning of the sentence. Definitely knocked the rating from a 5 to a 4.
This book was primarily about the Vampire member of Agatha's team. Anastasia is over 2000 years old and is in the lam. Her team has to track her down before the Vampire council does. In the process we get an interesting view of an alternate history. So, it was a good book at this point in the series.
Interesting to learn Ana's history. Wow,two thousand years. Enjoyed the story but was a little disappointed in the lack of magic. Looking forward to more.
Some secrets have been exposed but others are still in the background. What will happen to Bill and will they be able to know they have been infiltrated? Can’t what for the next one to come out!!
Wasn't a fan of this story. Not a fan of Anastasia. I thought the story was too dry and I kept putting it down and reading another book. It lacked the usual humor and camaraderie between characters. No loyalty among spies.
This Series is very well thought out and written. Most of the book's are a one sitting read, due to them keeping your interest.. Fergus Rocks lol CAN'T wait to Learn more about his little tricks.
I absolutely loved hearing about her life. This is a lot of the reasons I love vampires. I love to see who they have been throughout history. How they helped shape civilization and how they themselves were shaped by their long lives. Great read!
Changes just when you think you k ow which way things are going new possibly pop up. From under your nose so to speak, the possible directions are splendours.
Decent read, fleshes out some background of the Vampires, but not as much action as the other books in the series and lacks some of the humor. If you liked the other volumes you’ll enjoy this one but know it is in a somewhat different style.
I really enjoyed learning about Ana's backstory and thought the flashbacks into a slightly alternative history were incredible. I'd read more and more like this and can't want for more insight into Ana and the vampires. A great book, I didn't even mind its reduced focus on Agatha.
I didn't think it was possible but this series keeps getting better with each book. This is the backstory on Ana and gives a much needed and wholesome view to her past life before the FBI. It also gives some insight of what we can expect in her future. Keep them coming Mr. Paul. I love 'em
