Kentarou Miura (三浦建太郎) was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He is left-handed. In 1976, at the early age of 10, Miura made his first Manga, entitled "Miuranger", that was published for his classmates in a school publication; the manga ended up spanning 40 volumes. In 1977, Miura created his second manga called Ken e no michi (剣への道 The Way to the Sword), using Indian ink for the first time. When he was in middle school in 1979, Miura's drawing techniques improved greatly as he started using professional drawing techniques. His first dōjinshi was published, with the help of friends, in a magazine in 1982.

That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump.

In 1988, Miura bounced back with a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, as an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves (王狼, ōrō?) based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken. It was published in the monthly Japanese Animal House magazine in issues 5 and 7 of that year.

In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine. In the same year, the 10th issue of Animal House witnesses the first volume of the solo project Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga titled Japan, that was published in Young Animal House from the 1st issue to the 8th of 1992, and was later released as a stand-alone tankōbon. Miura's fame grew after Berserk was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of his masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary mangakas. At this time Miura dedicates himself solely to be working on Berserk. He has indicated, however, that he intends to publish more manga in the future.

In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. Various art books and supplemental materials by Miura based on Berserk are also released. In 1999, Miura made minor contributions to the Dreamcast video game Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. 2004 saw the release of yet another video game adaptation entitled Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Record of the Holy Demon War.

Since that time, the Berserk manga has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made, ranging from statues, action figures to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentarou Miura received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk.[1]

Miura provided the design for the Vocaloid Kamui Gakupo, whose voice is taken from the Japanese singer and actor, Gackt.

Miura passed away on May 6, 2021 at 2:48 p.m. due to acute aortic dissection.

Oh my god, a cliffhanger? Again??? Dammit, I think Miura already has all the answers and the ending for the story and even the elaborate art but he just enjoys torturing his readers. Isn't he just one of the Apostles???

This volume gives me the strongest LotR vibes. 🧝🏻‍♀️🧚🏼‍♂️🧙🏻‍♂️ Elves are amazing. I love elves. Anyway, it seems like, after 20 YEARS(!!!) of waiting we’re finally going to get the sane version of Casca back 😪🙏🏼 it’s about time. Can’t wait! 👏🏽

At long last - after decades of wait - Casca is getting herself cured! Her mind is probed into and her mental hang-ups are being dealt away with from within. It's pretty great. And yet... something feels wrong.

It's taken so long to get here, the resolution is just about bound to feel anti-climactic no matter what you do. For all the time it's taken, the big emotional stakes, Guts's driving force as it's been, there's been almost no narrative build-up or tension to it in all these years: no great climactic battles to power through, no emotional catharsis, just a couple standard wayside trips and fights with no particular personal stakes other than simply surviving. And then once we do get there, the king of the fairies pretty much immediately and with no additional fuss allows her to be healed.

The closest we've gotten to personal stakes is the nagging uncertainty on whether such a thing can work out at all, as well as Skull Knight's cryptic comment that what Guts wishes may not be what Casca wishes, something that was never really elaborated on - I mean, why would she not want to have her sanity restored? So it's mostly been a straight line, drama-wise (even if that straight line's been pretty high up).

I think it's the extremely long timespan that's throwing me off: we've been at this for so long already that one's mind begins to look forward to the end, and thinks the long-awaited climax is here. But this isn't it. We're not even close to done - it's just a quick break, a moment of healing after a long battle, nothing fancier than that. We're not in Mount Doom, we're in Rivendell.

And even then, as we see from the next volume, we're far from done.

Readers need to understand that this series isn't solely about Guts vs Griffith, and you can't expect a gory fight scene between the two in every other chapter. I noticed that Miura has chosen to focus a lot on world-building in the last few volumes and frankly speaking, he's doing an amazing job. I loved reading about the elves and magic (and who would've guessed we'd get merrows, too?) New characters? Plot twists? Character development for people other than the main protagonist? GIVE ME THAT. I'm really excited for the return of Casca, even though the Casca-now is also extremely lovable.

This is such an amazing series and I ask everyone to trust in the author. It's been 39 volumes and I've never been let down (except heartbroken by Griffith, of course). Definitely one of the best Fantasy manga ever.

Oniromancie

Guts and crew have finalyl made it to Elf Island... but it doesn't seem very inviting so far. There are traps and spells there to drive off visitors.

First Isidro and Guts fight off scarecrows and pumpkin monsters and then a giant wicker man. We meet the young mages casting the spells, and it seems Morda is the witchiest one with a broomstick and an attitude. After the battle, Guts and crew are welcomed by the Great Guru Gedfring - he governs the mages of Elf Island. He brings them to Elfhelm. It's a big beautiful forested kingdom. There they meet the Flower Storm Monarch who was in disguise as a servant. Things are pretty lighthearted.

Schierke and Farnese get down to business as the Monarch puts them into Casca's dreamworld in an attempt to restore her shattered mind. It's a pretty wild place with a dog-version of Guts towing a casket with a broken Casca doll in it. Schierke and Farnese decide to attempt to collect all the pieces and literally put Casca back together again.

This is one of if not my favorite volumes. They've reached elf island and Casca's mind is ready to be recovered. And damn is this good stuff. Casca's mind and how they go about repairing it is the most interesting this series has been since right after the golden age or around the time that the more magic elements were introduced. I don't say this lightly as I've loved the entire series, I hardly think there is an actually weak volume.

But this... It fills me with hope and it's just edge of my seat reading.

I can't believe we are so close, so close to getting Casca back but I am terrified of this too.
I am happy that it's Schierke and Farnese who are guiding the process in that dream hellspace.
It feels more appropriate for them to help Casca return than for Guts to do it, even though I am heart-broken for the man.

The art is as gorgeous as ever, who is surprised? No one.

As the series has progressed, the art has kept on getting better and better, and now it has finally reached the stage where I really question if it could get any better now.

Guts and his crew finally reach Elfheim and the plot to put cascas sanity back is put into motion.

Kentako Miura was not only a master of artwork but also an incredible writer with a creative mind. The symbolism used to depict guts and casca in the dreamworld is just jaw-dropping.

This volume started off so magical and whimsical and wholesome and then quickly became the saddest and most depressing thing I have ever read. Going into Casca's consciousness and seeing just how broken she really breaks my soul and the symbolism Miura is using is heartwrenching and beyond accurate. And just going through all her memories with Guts and what she was feeling at that moment, please I'm broken, crying forever.

“This journey’s taught me a few things. Alone my own body on the line I could rough it without regard for how worn out it got. But with the two of us, my sword grew heavy. I could no longer afford to die and I could no longer handle it all on my own. I set aside my own ways, accepted help from others, and have pushed onward. I’d like to thank you.”

And then this quote just breaks my heart, breaks my heart that Guts can't be there with her.

This is the 39th volume in the Berserk series. I really feel like the last few volumes of the Berserk series have been unfocused and kind of slow, however this volume changes that. This was the best Berserk volume in a long time and I really enjoyed it.

Guts and crew finally get to Elfhelm and are forced to battle through a number of defenses before they get to meet the leader there. They finally find out how to put Casca’s mind back together and it’s a journey only Schierke and Farnese can help with. Meanwhile Guts and crew celebrate with the other denizens of Elfhelm.

This was an incredibly well done volume in the Berserk series. The artwork is spectacular as always and the story finally makes a lot of progress! Here’s to hoping the next volume shows even more progress and starts to wrap things up.

Overall this is the best volume in the Berserk series that we have seen in a couple years. The story makes a lot of progress and the artwork remains high quality. Definitely recommended if you are a fan of this manga series. This is one of the best fantasy seinen series out there.

Elfhelm finally! The total opposite of all the previous nastiness. Will Puck take the throne?! Will Casca get her mind back?!

One of these questions is answered 😜

It really strikes me how much art has changed over the years.

Guess will be another few years till the next one 😭

The Fantasia arc catches a lot of flack for feeling different from the rest of the series, but I've enjoyed it a lot. The digital art really comes into its own here, looking very natural in print (funnily enough). The shift in art style suits the more fantastical and peaceful tone of this book. Guts has finally at his best again, being able to open up to others about his thoughts and feelings. The last time he was this reflective about himself was probably when he decided to stay with Casca, and the last time he spoke so openly about his feelings with somebody like this was probably... The Bonfire of Dreams? When him and Casca had sex? Either way, it has been a very long time and seeing him smile, openly express himself, and thoroughly trust others is utterly heartwarming.

Aside from that, I greatly enjoyed the dream segments. The first level of Casca's mind was so adorable, yet tragic at the same time. The imagery throughout was fantastic, as was the walk through Casca's memories. I can see how this stuff might be frustrating if you have to wait months between each chapter, but reading it all in one book was a great experience. I really savored it. I'm loving Berserk.

FINALLY we reach Elfheim and its...fine. There's plenty of comedy scenes with the elves and other magical creatures, but I didn't find them particularly entertaining. I mostly skimmed through those when they popped up as I'm far more intrigued by the magic users there and how the magic trees were used as a barricade to keep the World Tree from growing wildly in the real world.

Schierke and Farnese begin their work to heal Casca's mind and its a fun trip down memory lane as we get highlights of the Golden Age arc and a reminder of why everyone loves Casca so much. I haven't been particularly thrilled by the most recent volumes as Berserk has leaned away from its darker roots to more traditional fantasy, but I'm excited to see what happened with Casca in the next volume.

After 39 volumes of pure mayhem, chaos, bloodshed, we take a break from that and get a glimpse into this beautiful land of Elfhelm. I loved the world building in this and I feel that this is still just a small drop into an ocean of ideas Miura has for his series...it is really sad to know these are some of his last chapters coming up.
