My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.
I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.
I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.
Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.

I was never fully invested in this one. The writing seemed fine, but the romance was not starting in a convincing way. The suspense was OK. This just may not be the sort of story for me, because it’s possible I could understand the character’s motivation with further background revelations. BUT I cannot forgive the heroine who didn’t want to go to the police when a child was poisoned (resulting in sickness, not death) and her first instinct was “no, they might start asking questions about my background.” Which, btw, as far as the reader knows is that her former employer may have reported that she stole a bracelet that she didn’t steal. NOPE. I’m done.

Mrs. Pennyworth has had a rough start to her debut in society, losing a husband so quickly after being wed. Now she is receiving strange gifts on her door, she hires an investigator to flush out the culprit. Elliot is the former Scotland yard office now turned investigator. He is thrown for a loop once he starts his investigation, knowing something is off with Mrs. Pennyworth but is unsure of what it is. When Elliot finds out what Mrs. Pennyworth is hiding, is where the story line picks up and engages the reader once more.
Mrs. Pennyworth and Elliot (Mr. Baker) have a very odd relationship. Each one withholding secrets from the other, while claiming to be forthcoming. The chemistry seemed to be lacking, running hot and cold with emotions. The emotions felt off, it was hard to relate to any of the characters and when the scene would have called for a more intense reaction from the secondary characters, it fell flat. The secondary characters were true to the time period and added some quirks to the story line. The story line itself was a bit lengthy, almost as if we were revisiting the same incident many times over. Overall the novel was an okay read, it’s not as if it’s bad; however a few tweaks would have made it a more enjoyable read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main characters, Charlotte and Elliot were very likeable, even if Elliot held some hard fast principles. They meet when Charlotte had a problem that she needs solving and asked Elliot in his role of an investigator to assist her. There was an attraction between Charlotte and Elliot but he isn’t sure he wants a wife and she is undecided about loses the freedom that she has now. The mystery held my interest until the end and I kept changing my mind on who was the perpetrator . There is also the added complication of a secret that Charlotte holds. I hope the author writes more books in this genre. I was given a copy via Netgalley and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I do love a Victorian suspense novel. It is not Jack the Ripper inspired but a parallel story in the same world. Elliott is a private investigator who is a manly guy, not flirtatious, and has a way of seeing things as right or wrong. No in between for Elliott. Charlotte is also a very nice person but has a secret. Seeing Elliott and Charlotte navigate their way through the suspense of the stalker and finding love in the interim was wonderful to read (even through the major bump at the end). The mystery in this story is quite good. I had a hard time figuring out the villain until they were revealed. Can Elliott let go of his past? Can Charlotte let someone in?

3.5* Charlotte Pennyworth just out of mourning for her husband and start to get back into society, someone is leaving her some very macabre gifts on her front steps. Scotland Yard has very little time for such things with Jack the Ripper running the streets of London and send her away with a recommendation to seek out Elliot Baker investigator. Elliot Baker retired from Scotland Yard now a private investigator and Solicitor is intrigued with Mrs. Pennyworth and her problem. She is beautiful and clearly distraught by the the mounting disgusting gifts being left her. Elliot can tell she’s hiding something but he agrees to help her. If his mistake that’s drove him to leave Scotland Yard taught him anything he needed to stay away from beautiful woman who have secrets. Charlotte has decided she will not marry again. All the men in her life have cared more for themselves and fun then her safety and end up leaving her alone. Elliot may find a wife down the road but no has peaked his curiosity and when one did she played him for a fool. The more time Charlotte and Elliot spend together the more their attraction grows and the secret gifts become more violent. I had a difficult time getting into the story but when I did I truly enjoyed it and all the characters. There were twists and turns and a very interesting tormentor and heartbreaking moments. Callie Hutton never disappoints!
Charlotte was a companion to Lady Barton. Accused and threatened for something she did not do, she fled. Eighteen months later Charlotte is a widow and enjoying her freedom. Until someone leaves unwelcome and threatening things on her doorstep. She seeks the help of a lawyer/private investigator, Elliot. Elliot used to work the the Scotland Yard. He had some things happen and now distrusts all women. Yes, all women. "Women are not to be trusted..." Now he is a lawyer and private investigator. He agrees to take one her case, but knows she is hiding something. An interesting mystery. It was a bit out of left field I thought. There are enough hints dropped that the individual is guessed. Nothing more is made of it and I found myself more interested in the villain and wondering about the woman who was murdered. But back to Charlotte and Elliot. While I liked Charlotte as a character, I can't say the same for Elliot. I understand why Charlotte never confessed her secret. The moment her secret came to light Elliot turned his back on her and that was unforgivable for me. But, this being a romance book, you can (correctly) assume/guess that he is forgiven. Before that I was lukewarm about the romance. And after that? No fucking way.

For my first historical romance, The Pursuit of Mrs. Pennyworth gave me all I wanted and more. The thriller aspect was creepy and kept me guessing up to the reveal. The romance was sexy with just enough push and pull between the characters to stay interesting and fun. Mrs. Pennyworth was so relatable which I absolutely loved. She wasn't a damsel in distress and wasn't afraid to stand up for what she believed in. I love the descriptions of historical London and their way of life. I felt transported into this world for a few hours and honestly would have loved to stay a bit longer. The pacing was a bit slow, but I've heard that is common for historical romances, and the story was never boring. If anything I was kept on my toes up until the very end.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a most intriguing story, it had me second guessing on the villain many times. A fast paced story full of mystery, betrayal and of course romance!
Charlotte Pennyworth is a widow, who has been through much and not about to give up on her wealth and independence for marriage. After her near escape from a vile man, her marriage was a Godsend but unfortunately didn’t last long. Just when her life seems to be going smoothly she feels she’s being watched especially when she gets certain so called gifts left on her doorstep. #he fears that her past has come to confront her.
Eliot Baker is not to be made a fool twice by a pretty face, not after what happened the last time. He was publicly humiliated and lost his position at Scotland Yard. Even though the beautiful young widow asks for his help he’s reluctant to help her, even though her nearness makes his blood sizzle.
Is the threat on Charlottes life true or is it a lark? Can they let go of past hurts to explore their budding attraction? This was a well written suspense romance, I loved all the elements of the story. I loved Charlotte she was brave and fearless and a woman who guarded her secrets, and her heart. Eliot has his own failures but they are understandable, what I wasn’t fond of was that he placed Charlotte in the same mold. Of course he blunders gravely when she needed him the most. Overall this was an extremely satisfying read. I never expected the villains identity. I recieved a complimentary copy from the author for my unbiased opinion.
Widowed Mrs Charlotte Pennyworth has been receiving strange gifts left on her doorstep. Some of them rather nasty. The police in Scotland Yard are extremely busy with the murders of several prostitutes in London, so advised her to hire an investigator. Our heroine has a secret she doesn't want uncovered, but that can't have anything to do with what is happening. Can it??? Mr Elliot Baker left his job with Scotland yard after he made an drastic error in judgement that caused another policeman to be injured. Now occasionally the police recommend him for investigations. Our hero has a very black and white view of the world. Someone is either good or bad. He knows his latest client is hiding something, but he is only being paid to find who is stalking her. A lovely mystery for us to solve. There is no way to tell who our villain is until our author tells us. The "gifts" get more strange as time goes on. Police investigation in Victorian times was a rather hit and miss affair. Find proof of guilt could be almost impossible. A fascinating story. I enjoyed every page.
Interesting little novel, a Victorian romance/mystery with a bit of sexy passion. The h is a lady’s companion, accused of theft by the son of her employer, in order to force her to be his mistress. She escapes and restarts her life in London, eventually marrying and then being widowed. She seeks the help of an investigator when she begins receiving threatening gifts on her doorstep. He’s a former Scotland Yard officer, sometimes bitter towards women, and begins escorting her to society events in the course of the investigation. They are mutually attracted, and a romance evolves during the investigation. The story lagged some in the middle but has a good ending. I received a free arc in exchange for an honest review.

Mystery, romance, betrayal, intrigue all wrapped up in a fantastic read! Charlotte is such a great character, strong, smart, independent and ready to face the world... Elliot on the other hand has a huge flaw, he holds on to his past, one betrayal, with both hands. So tightly it makes him look at all pretty women the same, and that's what causes all his problems. The mystery is built up fantastically, little by little, bit by bit, until it is solved, and this couple falls in love while they try to solve WHO is tormenting the lovely Mrs. Pennyworth, our sweet Charlotte...but all's well that end's well, until it isn't...and Charlotte must rely on Elliot to believe in HER, trust in HER and have faith in HER...and well, it wouldn't be much of a romantic suspense if everything worked out easily now would it?? ♡♡ Charlotte is so strong, so brave and so tough...I do wish she would have made Elliot pay just a little bit longer for being so....Elliot...but, you cannot fight your heart!! Such a great story, a great mystery, and I cannot wait for Callie to write another one just like it!!
Recently widowed, Charlotte Pennyworth is relishing her independence and it rankles to have to rely on a man to help her with an increasingly sinister stalker. Solicitor & former detective turned private investigator, Elliot Baker, is reluctant to take on Charlotte's case but despite himself and his history with another woman, Annabelle he is drawn to the bright, attractive widow. Sparks smoulder between them but neither is looking to form an attachment. Elliot thinks Charlotte is hiding something. Charlotte has no desire to marry again. I’ve enjoyed the authors other books & this is also a very good read. The characters are very well fleshed & the pace of the book is very good, in fact so good that I read until the early hours to finish it. There are a number of suspects, also quite a few clues. Elliot & Charlotte both have to face their pasts before they can fully move forward. I love a romance & also a mystery & this book delivers on both, I certainly look forward to more mysteries from the author
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
It's 1887 London and Mrs Charlotte Pennyworth has just come out of a years mourning for her husband when she starts to rceive unwelcome 'presents'. She employs ex-police inspector Elliott Baker to investigate who now works as a private investigator and solicitor. The case becomes complicated by their growing attachment to each other. The mystery in this story was quite good though I did have my suspicions. I enjoyed the story and found the characters likeable and wait to see if there will be more written about Elliott Baker's investigations. A NetGalley Book
The Pursuit of Mrs. Pennyworth by Callie Hutton is the story of Charlotte Pennyworth and Elliot Baker. Charlotte has a mystery on her hand in the way of a stalker who keeps leaving her things but when she goes to the police that are busy with their on serial murder mystery. Charlotte turns to Elliot to help her find out who is stalking her. Elliot and Charlotte have a instant attraction which doesn't help the stalker with his feelings turning things darker. This was a really great romance with a mystery story line...loved it!
This took me a little longer to become engaged in the story than Callie’s books usually do. However, I did love the story. In fact, I always enjoy Callie Hutton’s books. I especially liked the mystery she wove, which kept me rather entertained. And the characters are winners. More of them, please!
this was fun. We have two people in charlotte and Elliott trying to forget their pasts and move on. For Charlotte she is enjoying freedom and not feeling like she has to account herself to someone. She is also hoping her past has been left behind. She is generous with her time and sweet as well. Very prim and proper. When she comes out of mourning she starts to go to small social gatherings and suddenly she has someone leaving strange items at her door. Some disturb her to where she seeks help. And this is where Elliott comes in.
Elliott was a police officer at one time for Scotland Yard but left due to a misunderstanding he felt responsible for. A misunderstanding that has him wary of believing the stories of women. So when Charlotte comes to him for help he is wary at first. Over time you see that he comes to respect and see the strong person Charlotte is. He sees that she is more than just what society dictates. She has a mind of her own and is kind. they both are just jaded from the past. He opens up more to her than she does with him as they get closer. The danger surrounding Charlotte increases and so does their attraction.
I love how they are with one another. Elliott is kind and fun but also keeps a distance at first. As does Charlotte. As he gets to know the true Charlotte, he lets her in and falls in love. I love how she changes his mind on marriage and woman in general. He knows she is holding something back but isn’t sure what it is. when it comes out he feels betrayed and understandably so. He is reeled by the news and doesn’t act the way he should. when he finally realizes his stupidity, it takes alot to get charlotte to see his love again and trust.
The suspense of the stalker in the story was really fascinating as you fall into the roll of detective with Elliott in trying to figure out who is doing this to Charlotte and why. The culprit is not one you would suspect and added a great twist to this fun and witty romance.
I haven't read a historical romantic suspense book for a while, so I was really intrigued by the possibilities The Pursuit of Mrs. Pennyworth offered. A young widow being stalked by a jealous lover (or are they?) who falls for the PI she hires to help her? Yes, please!
Ms. Hutton did a decent job of providing us with red herrings here--I'll admit I did suspect the perpetrator earlyish on, but I was far from convinced of their guilt until the person Elliot thought it was turned up dead (which really begs the question, just how good a detective is he? But I digress...) Charlotte and Elliott's romance starts rather awkwardly--their initial attraction feels a bit overblown, and all the foot rubs/shoulder rubs/scalp massages seem inappropriate in a not-quite-good-way--but by the end I was completely invested in it.
Which is when Elliot acts completely idiotically (though admittedly mostly in character) and ruins everything. He gets over it a bit too quickly and easily, but since he was really in the wrong to begin with, it's hard to be too upset about it. Charlotte's (completely justified) refusal to forgive him until he does some major grovelling therefore seems exactly as he deserves, and makes their HEA feel that much more as it should be.
Rating: 3 1/2 stars / B-
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Charlotte is a young widow with a past. Married only for a few weeks, her husband dies in a reckless carriage accident leaving her comfortably off and independent. Coming out of mourning, she suddenly finds herself receiving anonymous gifts that turn sinister. The police turn her away but recommend her to a private investigator.
A rather flat story. There is very little on who Charlotte is really other than a few sentences on her “meager beginnings” & being orphaned. But after her marriage and subsequent widowhood, she still appears characterless with her constant social activities that Eliiot escorts her to, all for the objective of finding the culprit of course. I bet if he had been the “Middle aged, paunchy man, with thinning hair, beady eyes, and thick spectacles” that Charlotte had originally envisioned, she would never have agreed *eye roll*.
For a man who “sees everything in black & white”, Elliot certainly didn’t behave professionally. Foot massages that grew into neck rubs & what else have you? & this when he was telling himself that she was his client.
Why authors like mentally deranged villains is beyond me.
Miss Charlotte Reading worked for Lord Barton, but he wanted her as his mistress and would not take no for an answer. So he accused her of stealing some jewels and swore out a warrant. She flees to London. She marries Mr. Pennyworth, the fool goes off and gets himself killed. Elliot Baker was an Inspector for Scotland Yard but had resigned his post. He now did investigations for people and he is a solicitor. She went to him to hire his services because someone was leaving things on her doorstep, flowers, dead animals and expensive jewelry. Exceptional story of deceit, betrayal, lies and love. It has a different twist on it. I loved reading about the dilemma she had to face. It was very intriguing and exciting. The author did a marvelous job of keeping all the parts together and have them make sense. The characters were so life like and so full of life, it keeps the tale going. She wrote a well rounded, even paced and smooth moving tale. It kept my attention until the end of the book. I received this ARC from Net Galley and voluntarily reviewed it.
Charlotte Pennyworth has sought out the assistance of Elliot Baker, a private investigator, retired from Scotland Yard. Since her husband’s death, she has been receiving gifts left on her doorstep and their nature has become quite distressing. Upon receiving the last item, smeared with blood, Charlotte fears for her life and after being turned away by the police, finds herself, working with Elliott to help uncover her stalker. Elliot, having been forced out of Scotland Yard, because of an affair, finds himself distrustful of Charlotte, whilst fighting his attraction for her. He also believes that Charlotte, is hiding some vital piece of information. This was an enjoyable story with many twists to the plot. The characters developed as the story progressed with parts of their life, gradually being revealed. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this. Sure it's a romance but the mystery interwoven really keeps you guessing. May take you a few tries to figure out just who the culprit is. I honestly thought this would keep me reading for more then a few days but I found I kept wanting to read just a few more pages. Thanks so much Callie.
This is my first Callie Hutton book and I loved it! It had the right amount of romance and sex along with a very intriguing mystery. Kept me engaged through the whole book.
I received an ARC of this wonderful new book and I encourage you to check out! I share a love of historical romance equally with mysteries. I love a good whodunit story that keeps me guessing throughout. Callie Hutton has written a captivating, couldn’t put it down, whodunit story with Mrs. Pennyworth and Mr. Baker. Someone is an admirer, a jealous possessive admirer, and the gifts left are definitely unwelcome. The only bad news is it doesn’t release for two more weeks so while you’re waiting, I’ll be reading it a second or third time!
From USA Today Bestselling Author Callie Hutton is a new captivating and suspenseful historical romance...

But more dangerous than a menacing stalker is secrets and if Charlotte's come to light, even the passion between them might not douse the flames of Elliot's distrust.
My Thoughts:
Who is the mysterious person leaving sometimes horrible and unwanted gifts on the steps of Charlotte Pennyworth's home? After making an unhelpful trip to Scotland Yard when she finds a couple of gruesome things on her doorsteps, Charlotte seeks the help of a former Yardman turned PI, although it rankles her to need the assistance of any man. Elliot Baker really doesn't want to help. After all he has reasons to not trust women in general. He is certain that Charlotte is hiding something and indeed she is. The better the two get to know each other the more Charlotte is certain that she is right in keeping her secret, although her feelings for Elliot are becoming stronger. Will Charlotte's secret be linked to her stalker? Will her secret lead to her downfall? These are questions that will be answered late in this convoluted tale. I gave this book 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 3.5 of 5.0 flames. The couple holds off on any real intimacy for an extended period of time as both feel that they may be anticipating a relationship that simply can not be. I received a complimentary digital ARC of this title by invitation from the publisher via NetGalley to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
I really liked Charlotte and Elliot's story! I really liked the mystery portion of the story.
I really enjoyed Charlotte. She came from modest means, but that didn't stop her from making her way in the world. After getting married, her life seemed to be on the right track. Even though her husband died a month after the marriage, he had left her well suited. She was finally secure in her life, until some unwanted packages started arriving for her. She hires Elliot to figure out who is sending them. They are quite taken with each other from the start and that just seems to aggravate the sender even more. Can Charlotte's past have something to do with the unwelcome packages? Will Charlotte and Elliot solve this mystery before one of them is seriously injured or even killed?
This was different from Hutton's other work and I hope she continues to write more like it as I was throughly entertained!
