UNIT: The New Series #5

UNIT: Encounters

Rate this book
Kate Stewart and her UNIT team investigate and confront alien attacks on the planet Earth in this new five disc boxset.

The Dalek Transaction by Matt Fitton. When a rogue guerrilla faction offer an alien artefact for auction, Kate Stewart and her team go undercover to the jungles of Central America. But they find that the prize on offer is far deadlier than its owners realise. Captive, desperate and alone. That's when a Dalek is at its most dangerous.

Invocation by Roy Gill. It's Hallowe'en, and Josh finds himself at a party where phantoms are becoming all too real. Osgood is working late and hears a voice from the skies making strange incantations. The next day, Kate has gone missing in the Scottish Borders, and the team head north to investigate. Ghosts from the past are haunting UNIT, and now they threaten the whole world.

The Sontaran Project by Andrew Smith. On a routine reconnaissance mission, Colonel Shindi finds more than he bargains for in the Forest of Ardennes. Back in England, an old colleague makes Osgood an offer she cannot refuse. The chance to take part in an exciting new scientific advance. Before long, UNIT is on collision course with a force of alien clones, and Kate must forge an unlikely alliance.

False Negative by John Dorney. When a strange travel capsule is activated in UNIT's laboratory, Osgood and Josh find themselves in a whole new world of trouble. Soon, nobody at UNIT HQ is quite who they seem, and the team discovers that the greatest danger they could ever face comes from within.

A thrilling full-cast audio with cinematic sound design and music, this special set comes as four separate stories rather than previous four-disc dramas; an anthology approach that this time includes the Doctor's notorious foes the Daleks and the Sontarans! CAST: Jemma Redgrave (Kate Stewart), Ingrid Oliver (Osgood), James Joyce (Captain Josh Carter), Ramon Tikaram (Colonel Shindi), Nicholas Briggs (The Daleks).

5.1 The Dalek Transaction by Matt Fitton

5.2 Invocation by Roy Gill
Bella storia di fantasmi, con qualche richiamo al Brig.

5.3 Sontaran Project by Andrew Smith
Sontaran, clonazioni e una collaborazione non così scontata.
Si delinea un nemico fil rouge, citato nel primo episodio di questa serie, resta da vedere se si esaurirà con il prossimo episodio o se comparirà anche in futuro.

5.4 False Negative by John Dorney
Due Osgood e due Carter e il ritorno di un universo parallelo alla Inferno, con citazioni di conseguenza.
In un certo senso disturbante, ascoltatelo e scoprirete perché, ma ben congegnato.

Quinto cofanetto sempre all'altezza della produzione Big Finish.
I personaggi sono ormai ben delineati e dispiace che nella serie madre non vengano fatti più riferimenti agli audio.

The first three stories were really a 3-4 star range, but false negative was so well done that it has become one of my top big finish stories that I've listened to, so I had to give it five stars.

5.1 The Dalek Transaction - Kate & Crew find themselves in the jungles of South America trying to negotiate with guerrilla forces for the exchange of money for … a Dalek! And things go as horribly wrong as one might expect. I do love a good international/impossible mission scenario,a new this one doesn’t disappoint (4/5).

5.2 Invocation - This one is almost a Torchwood “spooky-do” - almost (3/5).

5.3 The Sontaran Project - A Sontaran scout ends up in the clutches of some unsavory types, who relish uses him for fun and, of course, profit (3/5).

5.4 False Negative - What’s starts out as one confusing set up, quickly develops into a dazzling homage to the classic serial Doctor Who: Inferno, end up devolving into a tedious Osgood/Josh fanfic. But at least the middle was really good (3/5).

This release also includes the usual Big Finish cast & crew interviews and bonus features.

review: for The Dalek Transaction.

The first unit boxset I listen to was "Unit assembled" which had both the new and old unit teams join forces to stop the Silurians. While the ending was rather lackluster I really enjoyed it. It was great to hear both eras join up. It had some amazing character moments and nods. The biggest surprise was how well written Osgood was.

I've never seen the point of Osgood, oh look it's you doctor who fans. She's absolutely nothing but a reference machine in the show. Yet big finish fixes her and made her an actual scientist and a real person. Someone who feels scared, but wants to prove she can do good. Be like the Dr, be more understanding then her unit solders and actually does scientific research on aliens, with some hints of desire of a family. Maybe with Sam or maybe unit give her that feeling already. There's a story in which both her and Jo grant work together to save the sea devils and it's so much fun and so sweet that it's easily one of my favourite big finish stories and shows you just how good new who could be, especially when bringing back characters.

So the story here follows a group of guerrillas who are rebelling against something? But find a Dalek casing and mutant. They decide to sell it and unit is called in to investigate.

So the story surrounding the Dalek is fairly good and I did really enjoy seeing the hypocrisy in the guerrillas being freedom fighters but selling alien artifacts to the high end bidders and rich politicians/celebrity/crooks. But I can't lie it's the characters that i think let it down here. There not particularly bad and are enjoyable for the plot. But they don't really offer anything then to aid the plot. There's one moment that makes sense for the story but feels alittle old hat.

To keep eyes on the unit team as they later search for the mutant the female leader of the Guerrilla team locks up Kate and so it's her and Osgood in the cell while the men go and hunt. A simple joke probably would of fix this awkward moment. it doesn't effect the story too much, having both female leads pushed aside while the men do the fighting, but it's just a little annoying.

I can't say it's progressive because it was a woman locking them up either. I just wanted Kate to go looking/hunting for the Dalek too. She gets barely anything to do here apart from state the plot/obvious. Osgood is great though, she shows her fear and yet intrigue as they meet the Dalek. Yet trying to be like the Dr doesn't allow unit to torture it, which I like for her character. She's actually the one who doesn't fall for its trick later as she learns what its capable of doing. It's great to see her being the brains here and not constantly referencing. I don't even think she did one reference. My only compliant is that I really wanted a scene between Osgood and the Dalek, have it try and get into her head about how she's wishes she could be the Dr. Finally the Dalek mutant itself, easily the best thing about it. I'm actually annoyed how the characters let this story down because the Dalek is so bloody good here. I've always liked the idea of how if a Daleks casing is damaged the mutant is still a deadly creatures capable of killing just as many without it. Throughout the story the mutant is a passionate little killer Dalek, threatening people etc. Which, once we learn it's plan later makes it so much better that all this was a simple mind trick.

The mutant is very similar to the reconnaissance scout Dalek, here the mutant is an elite fighter. The mutant shows just how deadly and powerful a mutant Dalek can be. It's reveled later on that it could of easily gotten the weapon back sooner but decided to show/tech these humans how powerful a Dalek is. Matt Fitton does an excellent job at showing just that. The Dalek miniplates both sides by telling them an army of Daleks lies in the jungles. There are infact none, but it uses this to make the guerrillas desire more money from selling them and unit desire to stop them all. They carry the mutant to the jungle and it escapes the cell burning through it, which is a new power for this Dalek I believe. Hiding in jungle it attacks, bites and kills the solders. It also uses a new weapon created by itself.

It steals the chemical weapons from the scientific lab and makes them into gas bombs, killing the soldiers. It's so horrible and exciting to see a mutant do so much damage by itself and all as way to manipulate and trick them. It even allows parts of it's limbs to be scattered so it looks like it's dead, distracting them while it rebuilds the suit/gets the gun back. I love when people write Daleks like this. In or out of the casing a mutant is deadly. The Dalek mutant here absolutely made the story and if wasn't for the okish characters I would of rated this as one of my personal favourites. So for this story only, Dalek rating 8/10.

Unlike the previous releases in this series, this consists of four hour-long stories, three of which are linked by a loose plot arc, but which are otherwise standalone. Colonel Shindi makes a return, but Sam Bishop fails to make his usual appearance, his absence being used more as a running gag than anything else.

The Dark Transaction – The first story sees the UNIT team travelling to a fictional South American country where guerrilla forces are holding an injured Dalek captive. The result obviously has a lot in common with the TV episode Dalek (itself based on a Big Finish audio, and 12 years old by the time this came out), which it directly references. It does, however, ring a number of changes on the story, presenting a Dalek foe having to resort to rather different tactics. It makes a few hints at a larger plot arc, which I gather is properly followed up on in the next release. 4 stars.

Invocation – Entirely unconnected to anything else in the collection, this is essentially a ghost story. Sightings of terrifying spectres spread across London and are somehow linked to an old UNIT facility in southern Scotland and a ‘60s era space satellite that has started transmitting again. The science behind what’s going on makes little sense even by the standards of Doctor Who and I’m rarely a fan of supernatural elements in the show (yes, I know; The Daemons… not one of my favourites, I’m afraid). It’s atmospheric in places, I suppose, and Osgood is used effectively, but it’s one where I find it hard to suspend my disbelief. 3 stars.

The Sontaran Project – Colonel Shindi rather obviously takes the Sam Bishop role in this story (one wonders if it was originally written for the latter) as UNIT follows the trail of a stranded Sontaran soldier from Belgium to, well… Sevenoaks in Kent. To my mind, it’s the best story in the set, making good use of the Sontarans’ unusual biology to tell a tale that, in some ways, is rather dark, despite the amount of action. The Sontarans are antagonistic here, and the events of The Poison Sky are not forgotten, but it’s clear from the opening teaser that they are not the true villains in this particular tale. 4.5 stars.

False Negative – Of the original UNIT stories from the ‘70s, one of the hardest to do a follow-up to is surely Inferno, given how it ended. Nonetheless, Dorney has a crack at it here, in an alternate reality story featuring an ‘evil’ mirror universe. Although not, presumably, the same one. The story focuses on Josh and Osgood (whose relationship is very different in the mirror universe), but has fun with the alternate versions of the other regulars, too. I’m not a huge fan of Inferno but that’s largely due to the rather dull Primords, and by cutting them out, this story leaves itself with the good bits. Arguably, it’s as much Star Trek as DW and there’s perhaps a bit too much snogging, but there's quite a bit of comedy in it, which helps. 4 stars.

Big Finish has done a brilliant job bringing UNIT to audio, the past four sets have all been a lot of fun. UNIT: Encounters is the first time this range tries to do something more episodic, so I've been looking forward to this one.

The Dalek Transaction:
A rogue guerilla group in South America has offered Kate Stewart a transaction of alien origins. However, when UNIT arrives they find out a Dalek is being kept in captivity and its weapons up for sale. They're about to discover how deadly a single Dalek can be, especially when it's desperate.

This was an engaging and tense script that wonderfully highlights just how dangerous a Dalek mutant can be. Matt Fitton has done a terrific job putting UNIT out of their comfort zone and throwing them into an incredibly deadly situation that would usually be far easier to handle on familiar ground. 8/10

Invocation:
It's Halloween and Osgood is working overtime hoping for Sam Bishop to return when a mysterious signal from the 1960s returns. Off-duty Josh Carter is at a party when the guests are attacked by phantoms. Kate Stewart meanwhile is looking into an old UNIT facility to see why it's still being funded. UNIT is used to combating aliens, but when it comes to the past and the supernatural they're very out of their depth.

Roy Gill has written a brilliant ghost story that is creepy, atmospheric, fun, and tragic. It's a story that gives us more insight into Kate's past and what it was like being the daughter of an important man in the military. There are some spine-chilling moments here and the ending is heartbreakingly brutal. 10/10

The Sontaran Project:
On a reconnaissance mission, Colonel Shindi finds a Sontaran capsule in Belgium. Meanwhile, Osgood is reunited with an old friend who wants to show her a new project he's working on. The Sontarans are coming and it seems they need UNIT's help.

Andrew Smith has written an engaging Sontaran story about the unethical reality behind scientific studies and exploiting alien technology. It's an action-packed script with some lovely moments for Colonel Shindi and Osgood. 8.5/10

False Negative:
Accidentally activating technology salvaged from The Auctioneers, Osgood, and Josh Carter find themselves in a parallel universe where their alternative selves are lovers. UNIT is a small part of a fascist society and it's up to Osgood to bring them back home; the trouble is which ones get to escape?

John Dorney has written a hilarious story that is tense, chaotic, and crude. It's a fun episode that doesn't feel much like a finale, but that's because this box set has been a setup for the series' next arc. I'm very intrigued to see what happens in Cyber-Reality. 9/10

Overall: 35.5/40

Quite possibly the best UNIT yet! I think that everyone's become comfortable with the characters and the setting and the four individual stories in this made for a good mix.

The first story by Matt Fitton passed the Bechdel test before the music started! A different story about a lone Dalek on Earth, and some South American rebels, who might not simply be rebels. The second story was spooky, an homage of sorts to Nigel Kneale, which was lovely. It was nice to see the UNIT women in a horror story instead of simply battling aliens. It felt more personal and more scary. The third story was about cloning and Sontarans, more standard fare but good to see Osgood in such a prominent role. The fourth story by John Dorney, was SO funny! I wasn't expecting a funny UNIT story! But it was done brilliantly! Wonderful performances by Jemma and Ingrid. Fabulous twist on a UNIT trope.

Definitely one I'd recommend and I'm looking forward to the next volumes.

It was fine.
These are good entertaining stories, and some enjoyment and excitement was had.
But I could not say that my mind was blown.
I think I liked Invocation best, that was a nice mysterious ghost story.
The jungle Dalek hunt comes next, followed by the Sontaran story.
By now, I am tired of Daleks and any story that presents them as a real threat is welcomed. Having an injured mutant without weapons lose in a jungle and still being the most dangerous creature around was refreshing.
As for the Mirror Universe story.... I usually like these.
But this one just... felt a bit forced. And to be honest, Star Trek did it better.

I think there's some strong storytelling here, The Dalek Transaction and False Negative definitely being the strongest, but they're all very much worth a listen. I would say the second story falters a bit since it focuses a lot on Kate's past in a way that isn't backed up by any other media, but still, it's a very good release and I recommend it even to people who either can't or don't want to go through the whole UNIT series but still want a taste of it.

Just fantastic! I like the individual episodes, if not for the variation then for the fact that each episode is almost an HOUR!!!!! As opposed to the previous boxset where each episode is roughly the length of TV episode. Longer is better. 5 stars.

The cds were good but the stories didn't really flow with one another too well. They were really more like their own unique stories. The last one..wow..just wow. Did NOT see that coming and was rather..weird.

This one was meh for me. It wasn't horrible, but I found it lackluster in comparison to the previous installments. However, I do feel like the story will be continued in the next set, so maybe that will change my opinion.

The first three stories were just fine, but the fourth one, “False Negative,” was a fun dark parallel universe story that elevated the set a little bit. Always nice to have a strong finish. Or, should I say…Big Finish?

I couldn't stop listening to this box set.
The first story with the Dalek was quite action packed. The second one was very different and dealt with the supernatural. The third with the Sontarans was just awesome to listen to and the fourth one was so funny. I laughed loudly more than once. People around me must've thought me mad^^
I like the idea of shorter episodes and four different stories who are a little bit linked.
Additionally, I love how comfortable the actors are now with their characters and I love getting glimpses into their backstories. You can really tell, that the actors have great chemistry and I cannot wait to uncover more pieces from Kate's past.

On to number 6 now^^
