The War between followers of the Clockwork Gods and the Elder Gods is in full swing, with Janet, as always, caught in the middle of it. This time of course, she volunteered—though she knew she would be smote if she refused. Still, after three months running around Kabila with Itazura, trying and usually failing to recruit decedents of the Clockwork Gods to their cause, smiting almost doesn’t sound so bad. Then Janet’s enemy turned ally, Meroquio, shows up with a job especially for her: Infiltrate the largest encampment of decedents in the Elder God’s army, led by the Son of Winter. Acting has never been Janet’s strong suit, but she is eager to get some ground on the Elder Gods. The sooner this war is over, after all, the sooner she can begin the search for her friend Sylvia again.
At least that’s what she thinks until she receives a catastrophic message from Parker—Sylvia’s body is gone, kidnapped by the Elder Gods. More desperate than ever, Janet throws herself head first into the war, finding friends behind enemy lines, a group of rogue decedents led by a dangerous boy named Neil, and a plot to breach Kalite’s water barriers, allowing armies to cross realms. And when the God’s Gem, an weapon that can drain the power of even the strongest deities, goes missing, it seems more likely than ever that this war could take a turn for the apocalyptic.
If Janet and her allies can’t figure out a way to stop the Elder Gods, the world will be forever changed and Sylvia forever lost. And if Janet can’t control her ever strengthening power, she might lose herself as well.
Aimee Hyndman has been writing ever since her toddler fingers could grasp a pencil. A lover of all things speculative fiction, she spent many a night penning the beginnings of novels that would never see the light of day. Now attending college in Iowa, double majoring in Creative writing and English, she has clearly never lost her love of the craft.
When not writing and avoiding her school work, Aimee enjoys reading, singing, and acting at her school’s theater department. She is also a lover of anime and all things Disney.
Her area of specialty is fantasy of all sorts but she dabbles in many genres— whatever she feels compelled to write at the moment. The plot bunnies are never ending but, luckily, so are the words!
Amazing third entry in steampunk fantasy The Clockwork God Chronicles. 'Year of Descendants' had me on the edge of my seat; this series seems to get better and better as it goes along. We see greater development of characters, relationships, and godly powers. While this does tie up some of the story line, some questions remain unanswered. Looking forward to the fourth book of The Clockwork God Chronicles, wish it was available to read now!
I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else’s. Read more reviews! http://dreamerjbookreviews.blogspot.com
I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this is the third installment in a truly fantastic series, but since we follow around the same main character and the events of each book are very closely connected to one another, you really should read those books in order... otherwise you will be lost, and more importantly spoiled about the events from the previous stories :) because of that, my review will be divided in two: the next paragraph will be completely spoiler free, even if you are new to this series :) I will talk a bit more about the world, main characters, a few secondary ones and the world in general :) then, in the third and last paragraph, I will be talking about the third book... still no spoilers when it comes to that installment, but I will definitely talk more about stuff from the first two books, so if you don't want to be spoiled or you are not yet caught up, avoid it ;) ok, now that we have this little explanation out of the way, let's dive into the review itself :)
I read "Hour of mischief", the first book in this fantasy / steampunk-ish series a few months ago... and absolutely loved it :) taking place in a complex world, rich in details, this story follows around Janet and her group of thieves :) Janet is seventeen and already she went through a lot... born in a brothel, and now with a prosthetic arm, she gathered around her a group of friends, Sylvia, Parker and Sid, and together they steal from the temples of clockwork gods... that is, until one time they are caught and she agrees to an unconventional pact between her and Itazura, the god of mischief, to save her friends... she doesn't know it yet, but that decision will change her life, and those around her completely... :) because these books are full of surprising twists and turns, I can't say anything else about the events that happen after that :) what I can and will say, is that the writing style is fantastic... entertaining and engaging from the very start, it keeps you absolutely glued to the pages, because you have to know what happens next :) we keep getting to know more and more about the world... we are introduced to new characters, and at the same time, get to know more about the ones we already knew... sometimes those new informations can completely change your mind about them :) this whole series is full of action, surprises and interesting characters, so I highly recommend you giving it a try if you haven't yet... but definitely start at the beginning, otherwise you will be completely lost... and trust me, you don't want to be spoiled beforehand about certain things and events... those surprises are one of the best things about this series :) ok, now that we have this out of the way, let's jump into all the good stuff about this third installment :)
LAST WARNING people... SPOILERS about the first two books will soon follow :) I assume that all of you who are still reading this are caught up with the previous stories, because I will be mentioning people and events without any additional explanations, possibly spoiling some stuff... ok, let's begin... :) I'm not sure if I just forgot certain things about those first two stories, or maybe my initial reaction is just right, but I think this was the most surprising installment of this series... seriously, there were several jaw-dropping moments... including one that made me gasped so hard I though I might hyperventilate... #TrueStory :) fortunately I read that part at home, cause I imagine it would turn some heads and raise some eyebrows in public transportation... where I also read my books ;) anyway... :) we pick up a few months after the ending of the second book, and are thrown straight back into action... :) Janet and Itazura are working to gather as many descendants on the side of the clockwork gods in their war with the elder gods, but the situation is not easy... especially since Janet is still struggling with controling her newly discovered powers as the daughter of Autumn... add to all that, her group of friends is even more divided than ever... things are not looking good... obviously I won't spoil you any events from this novel, but it took turns in directions I definitely did not predict... :) I had my small problems with it... to be honest, I still feel like the relationship between Janet and Itazura could have used some more build up... I'd love to see more of them actually getting together, cause for now I feel like we skipped a few chapters between them bantering / flirting a bit and now them being together... I think my favourite part though was discovering brand new things about characters I thought I already knew pretty well... and let's not forget about the introduction of a few really cool ones... *coughs* Neil *coughs* ;) all in all, even though there were some small things I would like to see happen differently, this book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time... action packed, filled with surprising turns of events... I swear, be prepared for a few of what-the-WHAT moments ;) add to that complex characters and a really good world building and you get a book that will leave you wanting more... I know I am ;) after finishing this gem of a story, I am waiting even more impatiently for the next installment... :) go read this series ASAP :)
Year of Descendants is the fast-paced third book of the similarly action-filled the Clockwork God series, which I had thought was going to be the last installment of. Needless to say, it was a pleasant surprise.
First off, my favourite part was, again, the characterisation. On top of the characters we already knew and love, we met a whole new compelling cast, which was the highlight of the series for me; that we got diverse characters out of it was yet another bonus. (There aren't nearly enough asexual characters out there, if you ask me.)
Apart from that, what I really loved about having new characters was being able to see the different points of view. For all that Janet has her life thrown apart more times than she can count, we hadn't really seen a multiple-sided conflict before. We have this in Year of Descendants, with people of seemingly same or at least similar enough walks of life choosing entirely different sides for their own reasons. The characters, old and new, gained a refreshing sort of agency in this book and I loved it.
As for the plot, I'll say that plot twist. As much as I want to talk about all the action and the big plot points, that twist at the end got me too bad. Send help.
All that said, though, I'm still having trouble with the romance aspect of the book, it seems. As a strictly personal detail, I found the writing style too dry to carry the emotional tension, which also means that I still can't see the feelings and the attraction between Itazura and Janet. That in and of itself wasn't a book-ruining detail, but I have to admit that it was one of the reasons it took me as long as it did to get through the story.
Overall, I think Year of Descendants was a fitting ending (at least, it seems like an ending at the moment) to the elder gods story line, with more adventure to come in the future. Good luck to all characters on the next book(s).
Amazing and fast paced. Even though this is number three in a series, it was still easy to follow and not feel totally lost. The characters and storyline were well written and easy to follow.
