Seasons #2

The Tilting Leaves of Autumn

Rate this book
The southern town of Saisons lies at the crossroads between North and South, progressive and genteel antebellum life. Between East and West, between history and heritage, and new frontiers. Downton Abbey meets Gone With the Wind.

It’s 1912, in a world where slavery is dying and women’s rights are rising, and four young women who once shared a bond—and experienced a tragedy—question their own truths.

Scarlett was the shrinking violet in the group. Faithful to her friends, and hiding secrets of her own. When Mercedes steps in to rescue her, she unknowlingly plucks the thread that unravels Scarlett’s whole world.

But as Scarlett strives to hold fast to what is familiar the fabric of her life continues to come undone and secrets that are best kept hidden are exposed.

“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”

My stories are deep and dark, my characters raw and real, with a healthy helping of hope and joy, humor and laughter, and abiding and sustaining faith.
My characters struggle in some way for their identity. Their stories are their journey to know who God created them to be.
There is also a strong element of friends, family, and faith in all my stories, and the difference it makes to have such a support system.

• unsavory heritage series—seven generations, from Cissy to Connie, each with their own secrets, one of which is ugly and unsavory, and initiates the curse they all bear
• Seasons series—four friends, each one struggling to know the truth of just what happened when one of them plunged into the depths of the black waters of the Edisto River
• FourSquare – Four stories about four couples who also happen to be four sets of twins.

"The Tilting Leaves of Autumn" is an emotional journey. I love the way the author writes about the time period and all the changes that are taking place. This is a continuation of the first book in the series. I have not read the first book, so I was rather confused at first. The author does state in her book that she means for all the books in the series to build off of one another. It would have been helpful if there was a character list and a family tree (although that may be hard with spoilers). But once I read for awhile I was finally able to understand what was going on. It is an intriguing story, with so many mysteries. I found it hard to put down at times because I had to find out what was going to happen and the answers to my questions. This book also deals with the very hard subject of abuse. It was very hard for me to read at times, but I love the thread of redemption and forgiveness. Some of the plots are not tied up at the end, making me want to know what is going to happen to these characters!

I give this book 3.5 stars.

Content: I rate this book PG-13. It deals with abuse and there are references to more mature content.

Robin E. Mason has a gently-dignified Southern writing voice, and the first person narrative in her Seasons series is the perfect stage on which that writing voice shines. I’m instantly immersed in the setting, each word wrapping around me like my Tennessee grandmother’s flour-coated hugs. Each of the four main characters is vividly drawn, true to the time period but still relatable to today’s readers. The flashbacks to their childhood friendship are at once sweet and poignant, even as heartbreak and grief barge in over time.

In The Tilting Leaves of Autumn, we get to hear from Scarlett – another of the friends whose situation has dramatically changed from childhood to adulthood… and then again. Scarlett’s story is truly horrifying and heartbreaking, yet she maintains an inner dignity that is inspiring. At the same time, she struggles with fear as well as duty-based guilt, and these act as shadows over her heart that keep her from resting in the peace now available to her.

My favorite scene in the novel is the discussion between Mrs. Willowby and Scarlett over the ‘ruined’ snow white gown. The way that Mason weaves the conversation naturally into the gospel message a la Isaiah 1:18 is very meaningful and well-written. The tone stays light yet the reader also gets the sense that this is life-changing for Scarlett and perhaps even themselves.

Bottom Line: The Tilting Leaves of Autumn is gripping and emotional, a study in friendship, family and transition as well as mercy. Compelling characters and a warm writing voice help the story come alive as the town of Saisons bustles around us. As in the first book, sometimes the pacing slows but it’s much improved in this 2nd novel! A tough subject matter to the plot but one handled with grace and dignity, sure to tug on your emotions and linger in your heart.

Engaging

An engaging tale of love, abuse and friendship. A lesson in how we can take the guilt of others upon ourselves and nearly allow it to destroy us, even amidst our joy.
