Midnight Breed #15

Claimed in Shadows

Rate this book
In this pulse-pounding new Midnight Breed vampire romance novel from New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Lara Adrian, passion explodes between a daywalking member of the Order and a fiery female warrior whose shadowy past will test the bonds of both duty and desire.

As the son of a formidable Breed warrior, Aric Chase has been devoted to the Order all his life. With his training completed, all he needs is one successful mission before he can join the fight to destroy the Order’s chief nemesis, Opus Nostrum. His rare ability to daywalk lands Aric an assignment in Montreal, where he learns he’s to be teamed with another new recruit, a beautiful, but tough-as-nails Breedmate named Kaya Laurent.

Independent and driven, Kaya wants nothing more than to become a full-fledged member of the Order. Having grown up in squalor and neglect on the streets of Montreal, she longs for the close-knit family she’s found during her training to be a warrior. Eager to prove herself, she is thrilled to be given the chance at a key operation—even if she must share the mission with an arrogant, far-too-seductive Breed male who’s practically Order royalty.

Their unwanted partnership soon erupts into a desire neither of them can resist. But when Kaya’s past reaches out from the shadows to call her back, she must decide between protecting a dark alliance that could shatter her dreams of joining the team and a truth that could not only forfeit Aric’s faith in her, but bring the enemy right to the Order’s door.

Life at my house has been super crazy the last few days, and I'm feeling really lazy right now so I am just gonna keep this short and sweet. Claimed in the Shadows was a pretty good read. Not as good as some of the others but still very enjoyable. I liked Aric a lot but at first he came off immature. I liked Kaya and I enjoyed the plot. I felt really bad for Rafe. I can't wait for his book. Niko and Renata had their son Yay! The ending felt super rushed. Still love this series.

Breed warrior: Aric
Special ability: Daywalker, being able to wrap herself in shadows, photographic memory
Age: 20 something years old

Breed mate Kaya
Special abilities: She can read someone’s mind with a touch.
Occupation: Trainee member of the Order
Mark place: On her belly, above her navel.

Settings: London, Montreal

Fact number one: Aric and Kaya are very young.
Fact number two: Aric and Kaya want to focus on their career and not on love, flowers and matings.
Fact number three: Kaya has a big secret about her childhood that she is not willing to share with anybody.
Fact number four: There is a snitch inside Nikolai and Renata’s turf. Obviously the number one suspect will be Kaya with her secrets and her secret meetings. Obviously nobody likes a traitor.

As a result of these 4 facts, the love story of Aric and Kaya is no bed of roses.
There will be holding back, developing suspicions, thinking over and over again about the consequences. But do not fear. There will a happy ending as usual.

Apart of the main love story of the book, the secondary stories are very interesting:
1. Opus Nostrum is back and once more they are packing Breed-killing weapons with ultraviolet technology. And once more they do not hesitate to kill innocent breeds and destroy their Darkhavens.
2. Nikolai and Renata is close to having a baby and it is time for old friends to meet again and celebrate the fact. A reunion party for our favorite breeds which is ideal for Opus Nostrum to strike if they want the leader of the Breeds dead.

I don’t really have any negative things to say about this book. The book features the son of my favorite "Harvard" and it is written with the same flawless way that all the series’ books are writer so far by Lara Adrian. So obviously I LOVED IT!

The book could be read as a standalone, but I suggest a backward reading that will tie the most important secondary characters with this story:

***Books about the Chase’s family***
1. For Sterling Chase: Darker After Midnight (Midnight Breed, #10) by Lara Adrian Darker After Midnight (Midnight Breed #10)
2. For Carys Chase: Bound to Darkness (Midnight Breed #13) by Lara Adrian Bound to Darkness (Midnight Breed #13)

***Book about Nikolai and Renata***
Veil of Midnight (Midnight Breed, #5) by Lara Adrian Veil of Midnight (Midnight Breed #5)

Enjoy!

This is Aric’s story, son of Chase and Tavia. Lucan sent Aric to Montreal (Nikolai and Renata’s turf and it was really good to hear about them and also Mira and Kellan) for his new mission. Something that he’d been waiting for so long to prove himself. But in this mission he’s not alone. He has a partner, Kaya! Their mission is verifying the Intel with getting inside the target’s head, but everything doesn’t go well! Kaya had a tough childhood, she has a secret but she can’t tell anybody about it, she scared they blame her for betrayal!

I love this series so much but unfortunately this one wasn’t as good as I expected. It was the least favorite in this series for me. I expected Aric and Kaya to spend more time together alone and know each other better, not just about Kaya’s childhood but about other things! Most of their time was with the order and about the work! Their connection could have been stronger or if it was I didn’t feel it!

Told in multiple POV, 3rd person. It’s the fifteenth installment in the "Midnight Breed" series and I think it’s better if you read it in order. I hope the next book is about Rafe! All in all, I liked it but didn’t love it and hope you enjoy it as well!

4.5 Kickass Breedmate Stars!!

Kaya is a Breedmate and a recruit for The Order, Kaya is eager to prove herself and to move up the ranks like her friend and mentor Mira. On Kaya's first mission, she is paired with Aric Chase (Harvard’s son) to attend a high-profile wedding and find out if the groom has connections with Opus Nostrum. For Aric, this mission is a slight detour, he wants to return to Washington, D.C. where he has his future all mapped out, a future that does not include the beautiful and mysterious Kaya. There are unexpected issues that arise on their mission, issues that will keep Aric in Montreal longer than he anticipated. Meanwhile, he and Kaya develop a great partnership with a strong mutual attraction, their chemistry is definitely apparent.

“This detour was only supposed to be temporary. I never dreamed I’d find forever here.”

”She slanted him a wary look. Are you just trying to make me feel good? If so, don’t bother.
If I was trying to make you feel good, believe me, you wouldn’t have to ask. You’d know.”

I love how strong Kaya is, but she has secrets from her past that she is reluctant to share which naturally creates tension between her and Aric, he knows she’s hiding something. The Order has became her family, she didn’t have a healthy family situation growing up and because of the toxic environment she grew up in, she’s reluctant to share her secrets, she fears losing what she has come to love. Eventually they manage to overcome these obstacles and Aric helps her with deal with her past while they look for a trader with ties to The Order.

I love that we get characters from past books along with a bonus storyline involving Renata and Niko which brings many of the original characters to Montreal. I love that Lara Adrian can keep the storyline intriguing, interesting and fresh. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next! A must-read for all paranormal romance fans, once again another exciting installment in the Midnight Breed series!!!

WELL!!!!

Aric Chase has made my day, what a character - a hot, strong warrior that is everything a Breed male should be.... and a Daywalker! Aric and Kaya's story is amazing, quick off the mark and one that kept me captivated.

The Breed have always been a firm favourite, some more than others and this book is definitely one of those books where the character climbs to the top of the favoured list!

Loved this story, loved the fast pace... didn't see one or two of those twists but I can definitely say that I did know that the book would be good... they always are!

This was a very interesting installment. It felt like a family reunion of sorts. Every past couple from the series was either present or was discussed. It was a bit too much considering how many warriors and breed mates that included.

I didn't love or relate to the characters as well as I have in the past. But I also understand I can't love Every couple in a series as long as the Midnight Breed series.

My major complaint would be that the ending felt rushed. The heroine had a secret and told lies to the Order even though she was on their strike team. Her lies of omission put the order at a disadvantage in dealing with the enemy. Yet the ending was a gloss over. She never really had to own up to her misdirection with her commander. It was all very strange. Her lover forgave her and they made love....the end.

“This detour was only supposed to be temporary. I never dreamed I’d find forever here.”

4.5 stars!

I have been so freaking excited for this book, and the moment the ARC dropped into my kindle I dropped everything to read it and I finished it one sitting, unable to put it down. It’s a fast-paced, action-packed, exciting, intriguing, fun, sexy and romantic addition to the Midnight Breed series, and I loved it!

This is book 15 in the series, and while you’ll get more enjoyment out of it if you’re a fan of the series and have followed these characters and their storylines throughout the series, it would be possible to pick this book up if you’ve missed a few books, or even if you are new to the Breed world.

This is the story of Aric Chase (son of Stirling & Tavia Chase, twin brother of Carys). As a trainee for the Order, he’s dedicated to his career as a warrior and wants nothing more than to get out in the field like his father, his friends, and the men he has looked up to all his life. So when he gets the chance to take on a mission in Montreal, he jumps at it.

Kaya is a breedmate who is training with the Montreal branch of the Order. After surviving a torturous childhood and some time on the streets, she is tough, fierce and determined, and is working hard to prove herself to her team – the first real ‘family’ she has ever experienced.

When Aric and Kaya are teamed up to go undercover to investigate a lead in the ongoing war against Opus Nostrum (a terrorist group determined to wipe out the Breed), they both have something to prove and they throw themselves into their mission. It doesn’t exactly go as planned, which sets the stage for their work together to continue, and for the rest of the Order to get drawn in to their ever-complicated investigation.

They also didn’t expect the explosive connection they feel to each other. Neither of them have pursued relationships in the past, both of them focussed on their careers, but while Aric decides there’s nothing wrong with having a bit of fun with his temporary partner, Kaya is reluctant to get involved with one of the Breed’s golden boys, and with the sexual tension building, let the fun commence!

“(It) brings us closer than ever to one of Opus Nostrum’s members. And that’s all credit to you, Kaya.”
She slanted him a wary look. “Are you just trying to make me feel good? If so, don’t bother.”
“If I was trying to make you feel good, believe me, you wouldn’t have to ask. You’d know.”

I love Aric! He may be arrogant, but he’s a genuinely good guy. He wants Kaya, he doesn’t hide it, and I loved his sweet, flirtatious side.

“I may be an arrogant asshole with more blessing than I’ll ever deserve, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have enough self-awareness to recognize something extraordinary. Especially when I’m looking right at it.”

Kaya is tough, and no-nonsense, and though she may try to resist, there is something brewing between them that neither of them are able to deny, and when they finally decide to explore that chemistry, holy freaking hotness! They quickly realise that their connection is more than just physical, and I loved watching them fall for each other!

“You can trust me.”
“Trust you? I hardly know you.” The protect sounded weak, despite the force with which she pushed it past her lips.
“You really want me to believe you feel that way? Because I’ve been trying to convince myself that’s how I feel about you, and it’s not working. Not one damned bit.”

But Kaya has secrets. She has a past that she has tried hard to move on from, but that she remains tied to, and those ties are about to cause big problems with her work for the order. Torn between the past, and her new family and the man she’s falling for, she will be forced to decide where her loyalties really lie – but will Aric still be standing by her side when the truth is revealed?

It’s all very exciting. There are twists and turns, some predictable and some not, but even though I predicted the main twists, it didn’t diminish my love of the story, and with ups and downs, high action, excitement, secrets and emotional revelations, I loved the way it all played out.

I loved Aric and Kaya together. Their feelings for each other take them both by surprise, but I love how functional they were about it. They followed their hearts, and though they got scared and there were moments of confusion and uncertainty, I could completely understand where they were at, and on the whole their love story is sweet, passionate and just gorgeous.

A big bonus for me – with the story being set in Montreal, it gives us the chance to hook up with Niko and Renata again, and OMG, I loved their story! A devoted couple, I loved catching up with them, I loved the direction of their story, and I love that we even got a glimpse into Niko’s POV. It was really special, and a great added extra to the book. Mira and Kellan also appear, as does Rafe (Dante & Tess’s son), and I loved his storyline!

I loved being back in the Breed world. I was immediately sucked back into everything that I love about this world, I loved catching up with old characters, as well as meeting new, and this book was just what I was hoping for.

I loved it. 4.5 stars.

I love that we are coming into the second generation of the Breed Warriors but I always wonder how weird it must be for your parents to look the same age as you.
Anyway, our Magnificent Author is back to doing what she does best...taking the time to introduce us to characters we can fall in love with. In this book we have the son and brother of some of our favorite characters. He has the rare genetic gift of walking around in the sun. He is also determined to join the fight and become an awesome warrior. On his first mission he meets our heroine. She is also training to become an operative. She has a terrible past that we don't get nearly enough information about but it leads to some real terror for our original Breed Warriors.
Excellent story with nail biting action!

This book is for you if… you would like to be claimed indeed. Claimed by the urge to throw a book out your window and curse it to the seven hells.

Additionally.
Of course, I am mad I disliked the book but if we’re all being frank, it’s really just my own fault. The only reason I read it was because I have the compulsive urge to at least give all the books on my physical tbr a chance. And, to be fair. Claimed in shadows was just about good enough to make me want to finish it. It was not worth it.

Lara has long passed the time when the books she writes are remarkable and noticeably different from one another. It always goes the same; insta-love, tragic tragic tragic, sex, action, sex, more action, happy ending.

What’s happening.
Over the course of two weeks or less, two people who have sworn off love or proven to have high standards experience love at first sight. Consequently, days filled with steamy sex, hurtful arguments and little logic ensue. After a tragic showdown in which either one or both love interests are in danger, the happy end ensues.

2 STARS. Definitely a disappointment. It might not even have been worth finishing for a variety of reasons.

I'm a huge fan of the Midnight Breed, it's been my favourite PNR series for a long time now and in my opinion Lara Adrian's books just keep getting better and better. The last few novellas have been great but they were about some of the European Order members so this is our first chance to catch up with the core order members in a while. I hadn't actually realised how much I missed them until I started reading this but it was absolutely wonderful to see so many old familiar faces and I'm loving getting to know the next generation too.

The Order has been trying to put a stop to Opus Nostrum for a while now, this terror group wants to wipe the Breed off the face of the planet and now that they have access to UV weapons they're an even more dangerous enemy. Every lead the Order get seems to reach a dead end and Opus Nostrum are always one step ahead so they really need to work fast to get information from their latest suspect. Aric is Sterling and Tavia's son and twin to Carys, his rare daywalker abilities make him the ideal Order member to go undercover at a high class wedding where they might have a chance to interrogate their mark. He has been teamed up with Kaya, a breedmate who has worked hard to prove herself a valuable asset to the Order. Both Aric and Kaya are desperate to become fully fledged members and this assignment is the perfect time to show off their skills. Kaya's unique breedmate ability to read people's mind with a touch, combined with Aric's ability to wipe memories should make it easy to get information on Opus Nostrum without tipping their hand but field jobs hardly ever go exactly as planned and if things go wrong they'll be on their own.

Kaya was such an easy character to like, she has worked so hard to prove herself to the Order and although she's no match for a member of the Breed in physical strength she holds her own pretty well and brings her own set of skills to the party. Kaya had a difficult upbringing and there are things about her past that she's incredibly ashamed of so she's keeping some pretty big secrets because she's terrified of being kicked out if the Order learns the truth. She would never do anything to hurt the Order, they've become the family she always dreamed of, but when you've been hiding something for so long it just gets harder and harder to come clean.

Aric initially comes across as a little self centred and arrogant but once you get to know him you realise he's not a bad guy. His parents have always given him and his sister everything they could ever want but they both had to earn their place in the Order - there are no free rides given no matter who your parents are. In fact, having such important family members have only made him feel like he has even more to prove to live up to their reputation. He is drawn to Kaya immediately but they're both reluctant to start any kind of official relationship, partly because he doesn't plant to stay in Montreal for very long but also because Kaya knows her secrets will come out eventually and she doesn't want to lie to to him. What starts as a fairly antagonistic relationship soon grows into mutual respect and that allows them both to give in to the simmering attraction that was there all along. I loved their romance and found it very easy to root for them as a couple.

We also get the chance to catch up with some of the original couples, Nikolai and Renata are in charge of the Montreal chapter of the Order and they have some exciting things going on in their lives so we see a fair amount of them both along with their adopted daughter Mira and her mate Kellan, but we also get a glimpse of Lucan, Gabrielle, Rio, Dylan, Chase, Tavia, and some of the others. I loved getting to know Rafe (Tess and Dante's son) and really hope we get a book for him but I don't think he's going to be ready for a relationship just yet so we might have to wait a while. This series is just getting better and better, the fight against Opus Nostrum is heating up, the danger to the Breed is increasing and the Order's task to protect Breed and humans alike is just getting more complicated. I love where Lara Adrian is taking these books and and can't wait to get my hands on the next instalment!

Claimed in Shadows is a great addition to the Midnight Breed series. I loved re visiting the First Generation of Breed Warriors and there Breedmates. This is Aric Chase's story. Son of our beloved Sterling Chase aka Harvard and his beautiful Breedmate Tavia. I really enjoyed the bits with Pregnant Ranata and Nikolai and Mira there adopted daughter and her Breed Warrior. It was great fun to catch up with old characters that feel like friends. I have been reading Midnight Breed series since 2007 and Lara Adrian's never disappoints.

Aric Chase has been sent on a mission in Canada to get information on Opus Nostrum the enemy that has been trying to destroy The Order. He meets and is partnered with Kaya Laurant a Breedmate who has been training to be a warrior in the Order. She is working under Nikolai and Ranata they are the Head Leaders of The Order in Canada. Kaya has secrets and this is the plot of the story. Is she Betraying the Order?

The traitor in there mist is easily figured out and you keep hoping that it isn't who you think it is. The story has plenty of action. Aric and Mira make a wonderful couple and I liked both of them very much. They have a hot sensual romance together through out the story.

The only complaint I have is with all authors these days and it happens in Claimed in Shadows and that is the rape and violence too women. We live in a world today that authors need to write heroines or any of there females characters with high regard. All women are not abused and mistreated. I would love to see a more positive attitude in the books that I read all around about how great female's can be treated and loved. Just Maybe it will catch on in this world of ours. "Life Imitates Art". So I took a star away 4 stars instead of 5!!

Contains spoilers!

I like that this series is still ongoing, but I think the quality of main characters has declined with the onset of the timeskip to the next generation. Part of the appeal of the first 10 books was that the male protagonists all mostly had tragic or interesting backstories that they worked through. Their children however have never had to really struggle with anything, which makes it kinda hard to like or sympathize with them. They're all just so eager to go off to war and play hero without any understanding of how truly ugly life can be. They feel less filled out; too young, inexperienced and naive for you to really give a damn.

Especially Aric.

In the past few books he's come across to me as a bit of an entitled brat, with too many natural talents, and a loving family with a large pool of supportive friends. In other words too bloody perfect. Kaya as a character is alright, felt frustrating as you watched her decision to keep secrets make things potentially worse and worse for her. Not to mention that this book feels a bit short compared to the others, so not much time is allowed before the two are declaring undying love for one another. All in all felt rather juvenile and not quite a believable romance.

Another thing is that this books plot felt as though it meandered off into a useless tangent. Not much happened to be honest in the grand scheme of things. They had a purpose in their first mission at the start, but pretty much all their leads end up getting killed off, without us finding out anything useful, which gradually annoys you more and more. I saw through Siobhan early on too, didn't make sense the author would pair off another character in the background. Finally realised she was likely a spy when Rafe mentioned she was his perfect type a few chapters in. No clue if it's as obvious to everyone or just me. If it looks too good to be true it usually is.

On the whole this is an okay book in the Midnight Breed series, but nothing noteworthy or amazing. A safe, dull trip back to the world of the Breed that does nothing much for the overall plot. If you're not a fan of Aric you needn't bother with this one, easily skippable.

Aric Chase is trained and ready to finally take up his own position within the Order. As the day-walker son of two of the most formidable Breed, he is nearly royalty within the Order and Breed society. But he works hard and is ready to prove himself when his special gifts are needed for a covert mission in Montreal.

Meanwhile, Kaya was raised by an abusive mother and in poverty. She never understood what family could be like until she became a trainee of the Order and friends with Mira. Now Kaya works hard to prove herself and become a member in her own right, but if her past ever comes to light, she may lose everything.

Claimed in Shadows is the fifteenth book in the Midnight Breed series, and the fifth since “New Dawn,” when the author shook up her world and moved it 20 years into the future. I honestly wasn’t certain I was going to stick with the series as it just hasn’t been as solid and consistent since the changes. However, the opportunity to listen and review this audiobook presented itself, and I’m so glad I took it. Between the exciting story and Ms. Huber’s narration, I’ve come to enjoy and appreciate the Order all over again.

Claimed in Shadows is exciting and engaging. I like that the focus was fairly narrow, keeping side stories relevant to the overall plot and staying away from the Atlantean storylines. The Order is working to take down Opus Nostrum (ON) and its associates, yet ON seems to always know what the Order’s plans are. There is a pretty good twist in this one, and I like how it played out.

Kaya and Aric are friendly from the start. Although she’s human and fairly new, Aric treats Kaya as his partner and equal. They allow their mutual attraction to burn and dance around the fact that he’s going to be leaving as soon as their mission is complete. Both are considerate and thoughtful, which makes things work out for the better even when Aric discovers Kaya has been lying to him and the Order. I appreciate why Kaya kept her secrets and the severity was enough to place fear in her that Aric would not want her, but he and the Order recognize why she did what she did and forgave her.

Ms. Huber provides a lovely narration for the title. Her narrator voice is very matter-of-fact and straightforward. Yet every character has a unique voice. Ms. Huber supplies a large variety of fabulous accents. I like that the voice she picked for Aric is youthful. It’s more like a young man (which he is) than a roughened warrior. It suits his station, although at least twice Kaya comments about Aric’s deep voice. Kaya’s Franco-American voice was sharp yet smooth, just like her.

Overall, Claimed in Shadows as narrated by Hillary Huber reignited my interest in the Midnight Breeds series. I found the combination of the solid storyline, steamy romance, and lovely narration, both exciting and entertaining.

My Rating: B+
Narration: A-

I love this series! When i was introduced to adult PNRs (what feels like a million years ago!), this was one of the first three series i'd started with and it still has not gotten old for me! You would think that after this many books in a series, it would start getting repetitive and boring but Lara Adrian has done a great job of keeping everything fresh and still exciting! This book was no different...a lot of action, suspense, romance and angst..Loved!!

Meh... This was just ok. This is turning into a 'Lite' version of the series beginning. It was a pleasant read, sort of cheesy at times. I guess the author is running out of steam on this. Hopefully the next book will be better.

I was kind of hoping for Dare's story first. I feel like he has a bit of a rebellious spirit and is shown to already have a story on the rise, whereas I haven't gotten much of a feel for Aric just yet, outside of being protective of his sister (even though they've had little interaction in the books).

But I am still happy to be getting another MB book.

I received an advanced copy for my honest review.

I truly enjoyed this book. Full of action and the romance we all love. Aric & Kaya are a fantastic couple. I enjoyed see so many of past charterers in this book.
The only thing that I question is the past 5 novels and forgot how many novella all take place within a few years. I think that time line is off for me.

Kaya and Aric meet and they seem to feel something for each other right away but don't act on it right away. They are both sent out on a mission which doesn't go exactly as planned and Kaya is mistaken for someone else. It takes a little while but we find out why the guy she ran into thinks she's someone else. It wasn't at all what I thought it was but the twist was better. I think she should have come clean with the people she's working with right away but she waits and tries to fix things herself which doesn't work.

While they are trying to stop an organization, they find a traitor who has been right under their noses and stop this person but not before they hurt someone. They save someone as I knew they would and Aric and Kaya get a lot closer. I really like watching them find their romance. For those who have reading this series for a long time like I have it was nice to see characters that I have come to really like.

I usually like these books a lot but this one was slow going for me for much of the book. It just didn't capture me the way some of the other books have and I found it a little slow in a lot of parts.

Claimed in Shadows is book 15 in the Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian. The timeline continues on directly after Defy The Dawn. The Opus Nostrum storyline had Aric and Rafe going after a woman suspected of being part of the group. Claimed In Shadows picks up with those two warriors on their way to Montreal before heading back to DC.

The threat to the Breed has really increased. I'm really scared for them all when we see what they are facing. Opus Nostrum needs to be stopped and soon. I just hope that we don't end up with a whole lot of casualties. The war is building and the adrenaline in the story is really high.

In Montreal, Aric meets Kaya and they end up on a mission together. The mission kind of falls apart, but the sparks between these two are definitely ignited. Unfortunately, Kaya is hiding a lot of secrets that if found out, make her a prime suspect as the Order's leak. I don't know Kaya well, and I was definitely suspicious of her. I really wanted Aric to be happy with her, but I didn't trust her all that much.

There is also a big event for one of the Order's warriors in Claimed In Shadows and that was really exciting to see. It brought all of the older characters together and reinforced their relationships. I loved it!

Claimed in Shadows had a fun romance with some awesome action. It left me fearful for the Breed and anticipating Break The Day all the more. I can't wait to get to Rafe's story! This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict
