Born in 1960 and raised on an overdose of television, NASA, and science fiction, Ryk Brown has worked as a cook, rock guitarist, stage lighting technician, and paramedic. He currently resides in Northern California with his wife, daughter, and cat. By day he fixes computers, and by night he creates stories.
Having spent his entire life "thinking stuff up", the advent of digital publishing has finally given him an excuse to write it all down and share it with others. ("Others" meaning someone other than his poor wife and daughter.)
A long-time fan of all things science and space, his goal is to write and publish an on-going series of sci-fi adventures. To be set in his own version of humanity's future, his characters will explore the vast reaches of the galaxy, and perhaps even the universe. He invites you all to join him on this journey through his vivid imagination.

This is book seven of the series. I am a big fan of both series by Ryk Brown. The characters have grown on me and feel like friends now. The action is almost continuous. I am amazed at the skill of the Gahtazak. Slowly all the key people from the first series are gathering to do battle in this one. Unfortunately, in this story, Nathan and team are taking a beating. Can not wait until the next book in the series comes out.

I am frequently disappointed by independently published books, but this is one author I have added to my follow list. I wish Brown all success in his writing. I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is almost ten hours. Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the series. Kafer has an easy to listen to voice and an excellent narrative rhythm. Kafer is an award-winning audiobook narrator and voice-over artist.

Well, some sad stuff happens, along with some victories. Several key characters die — people we’ve known across both series.

For me, this two-string series (20+ books) has incited a sense of futility, as we see the same worlds suffer repeatedly from severe bombing, including nuclear drops. The author seems to have no clue how such devastation effects people, health / disease, animals, crops, weather patterns, air and water quality. Recovery takes decades, even centuries if bombs break on multiple cities / continents. For example, it would take a century for Corinair to rebuild after the bombing they suffered repeatedly in Legend of Corinair, Freedom’s Dawn, Rise of The Corinari...so now, more bombs. So hopeless.

We also have seen entire worlds /people we care about get glassed into extinction. Overkill much?

So this series isn’t fun anymore.

Lord Dusahn revealed (hinted) that he got his jump drive technology from an old man. I think he was alluding to that treacherous psycho Dubnyk, who was rescued from an ancient cryo-chamber in book 7, EXPANSE. I am losing hope that we will ever learn his true story (did he start the plague?) and see him pay big time for his sins.

I do wish there was a master list of characters and the books that featured them. And a list of ships and their captains. After reading +20 books, I cannot remember all the secondary and tertiary characters. Like Jonas Pritchett.

I've now caught up on all the books in the frontier saga series, both seasons, and now I'm sad, I actually have to wait until Ryk Brown puts out the next one... The horror, the unimaginable indignity....

As for the story, yet another terrific story, I love how each book is a story unto itself, you don't need to worry about those stupid cliff hangers that other authors seem so hung up on. If the story is compelling enough, without a cliffhanger, people WILL get the next one. This series is a great example of that.

One side note, OMG !!! stop killing all those dang Ghatazhak!!!! Nathan and the gang NEED them!!!

Fun, but not the ending we all wanted

I really wish one of his hairbrained schemes had worked out on this one. Another fun book in the series, but he's losing a lot of ships and a lot of troops. Pretty soon it'll be general Telles and one commander

I'm not sure if it's the heavy foreshadowing, or if I'm developing my Ghatazak abilities to see potential outcomes, but the books in the series are becoming somewhat predictable.

This one was good, but not great. I was not surprised at any of the events that occurred. There were several that were meant to be highly emotional or shocking, but they did not impact me that way. The typical battle scene, although very complex and creative, was not as exciting as it usually is. It could just be me and my current mood though, so take that with a grain of salt.

I do hold out hope that a reckoning is on the way for the overreaching general of the Sol Alliance. There were some very convenient paths crossed to bring some damning information to the right ears. We'll see how that turns out. I do hope that the hero of the series finally stops being so damned self-sacrificing and goes after a little bit of revenge. If he doesn't fix things so they last, then what's he fighting to accomplish?

One criticism I do have is that two characters have been built up over the last several books, but they have been pointless and useless. This episode they were captured and conscripted into the enemy's army. All the things they had been working toward were shown to be pointless and, in fact, poisonous to the Corinari rebellion. The only reason I can see for even having them is that their trainer turns out to be someone important from the past, but it's been so long since I read about him that I really don't remember who he was as a character. I don't like throw-away characters and plot-lines. It makes me feel like I've wasted my time after having read it, especially if it was boring to begin with. I hope that lack of tie in does not continue to be part of the writing style of this series.

Anyway, enough rambling on this review. I give it a solid three stars and call it a Good Serial Read.

Ryk Brown has taken his hero Capt. Nathan Scott across the vastness of space, saving civilizations from tyranny and upholding the principals of freedom despite being overmatched at every turn. This space opera spans the 15-book initial series chronicling the exploits of the starship Aurora and now continues into the Frontiers Saga. "Who Takes No Risk" is the seventh in the second series. Brown even brought Scott back to life via clone and saved memories. He's tough on his heroes. Many don't survive. And this latest episode is no different. Scott and his ragtag crew have decided to take on a bloodthirsty foe they have no chance against. They're just in the right. They have moral superiority on their side. That and $5 will get you a coffee at Starbucks (where I'm writing this at the moment). And, as a fan, sometimes the difficulties make it a tough go. Not that I don't still wait for every book drop. I mean, it's hard to read about your favorite characters facing such insurmountable odds all the time. But that makes it good. Scott and crew want to get a leg up in their rebellion against the rogue Dusahn, a splinter group of the militaristic Jung empire. But will they sacrifice everything? Brown makes being a patriot, the kind of person who fought and died for the U.S. Constitution, freedom and individual rights, very very hard. And those of us who have been brought into his jet stream just have to hold on for the thrill ride.

Ryk Brown did a great job on this book. The book takes place on several fronts. Nathan is unable to get the Rakuans to join the resistance. He will still protect them, and there is a scene where the Aurora is called in to do just that.

On Earth, the Admiral wants to go to war against the Jung, and destroy as many of their battle platforms as possible. An bombing at the Founder’s Day celebration kills Dayton Scott, and the Admiral imposes Martial Law across all 18 Sol sector colonies.

Nathan has to decide whether to steal a battleship from the Dusahn, rescue captured Corinari, or do both. He decides to do both, jumping the Aurora between two different systems four light years apart.

Things don’t all go according to plan. Nathan is able to rescue the Corinari, but loses 100 Gotazak in a counterattack.

He is devastated to learn of the development s on Earth, especially finding his severely injured sister in a stasis tube.

Nathan is finally coming into his own, able somehow to analyze quickly different courses of actions, and adjust quickly to the fog of war.

What a story...

This book continues the struggles of Na-Tan, and evolves the obstacles that gather strength in his way. The writing is as good as it gets. The battles, the plots. The successes and failures. The richness of the story pulls you along, with only reading of the last page to leave you in anguish, wanting more. One can only hope the next book will be available soon. Bravo Mr. Brown, bravo! Highly recommend this series, but make sure you start from the beginning as the story is so much better knowing the background. Your heart will follow each characters path making this story so very much more enjoyable.

Starts off well enough

The more I am reading this series of books, the more I find I am picking them apart. Last one was irrelevant to the storyline, this one starts off well enough, but the last 30% of the book is just one very long description of one battle. Ok it's an important battle, but that much is too much
The outcome of this book will obviously have significant impact to how the next few go. Hopefully not giving too much away, but you have to think Nathan is going to be out for revenge. Teles is now in charge of a much smaller force and the rebellion as a whole is struggling with resources, especially war ships

Absorbing Attention holding, simply a great read

As this is several books to say the least into the story line I will not waste time to give details of the story, my review is simple the writing is great, the characters are real certainly to me.
This book continues to a high slandered of storytelling and I wish I had not finished it, I have therefore I can only wait until the next in the serious.

This was an exciting book. There were about 4 stories going on at the same time; descriptions of what was happening in 4 places to people on the side of the Alliance. The ending of the book was particularly exciting up until the end. Some main characters were killed in the book and so it will be interesting to find in the next book who Nathan goes after moving forward. I eagerly await the next book.

Good read, and the final battle is a nice idea.
I had two issues with this book. One: Lord Dusahn acts very differently from the previous books. His ego changes even in this book a lot. Two: the number of casualties is unnecessarily high for my taste. It felt like, the author is killing everyone, just because he can. For a long time of the book (and the prev. one), almost no one dies. And then some main characters, and a lot of others. It felt a bit forced for me.

Book or Chapter

This saga makes for an interesting and perhaps overdetailed series of chapters. Saga 8 was a cut off leaving the reader hanging as there was not even a chapter ending to this story. Sadly, almost none of the episodes thus far except for the first have been stand-alone books. Will I continue on? Most likely because it is free and I am curious as to where things might go

Good and Exciting....

This volume continues to keep the mystery and intrigue going. Nathan and the crew again get into exciting scraps and battles, leaving a cliffhanger at the end. But Ryk, do a better job of proofing the last 4 chapters, they seemed hurried with words misspelled, this isn't like your other books. Overall, Good Job.

I hate to hurt the overall ratings

I really hate to hurt the overall ratings, but there are maybe one or two books that I would give a five star rating, the Bible being one of them. I did thoroughly enjoy this book, and I am thoroughly enjoying this series; it is good science fiction escapism, just read and enjoy

mA sad sad time

This was a very fast read once you got into the book. A lot of advancements in technology, the ship's and their leaders. So much fighting and death. Not sure how much Nathan can handle. Unfortunately this book left me very sad. The loss of so many great characters.

I was all set to give this a three star review, then I finished the last few chapters. This story starts off slow and plods along without taking any risks. Then in the end things build up to a final battle that throws everything into the winds.

My suggestion is to set aside a block of time for the the final fourth of this one, but you likely won't be setting it down.

I thought this one was very good. I haven't been as interested in the books in Part 2 up until this one. Without spoilers, there was a lot of interesting things happening. There was a lot more action and a lot more death and sadness than other books. Not that I like the sadness, but I don't want the outcomes to be predictable all the time.

Another wow

I can't get enough of this series. The forethought that has gone into each book as it leads to the next is astounding. Going to be a tough wait for the next as it always is.

Wow.

Ep.#6 was one of the best in the series, and this one is right up there with it. It started off pretty good, but the pace kept increasing until a final crescendo. I hope #8 lives up to my expectations after #6 & #7!

The series keeps getting better

No Spoilers

Like the rest of the series, I couldn't put this down. Ups and downs with characters you have grown to know and care about. If you haven't read the first 15 books, start there. You won't regret it.

Another great work

I want to get mad at Mr Brown for killing off key figures from previous books but in the end they are fighting a war. And in war people die. I guess it makes the story a little more"real".

The feels

Some of the scenes in this book, I played then in my mind as if it were an intense action film or television series. Each scene was broken up and arranged with great affect. I enjoyed the flow of it.
