Logan Wilmont dreams of freedom, but he’s trapped in a mental institution where he doesn’t belong, by a mother who wants to keep him quiet. He knows he quirky, but not insane—except for when he sees the other boy who looks just like him.

His only hope is Rox MacFarlane, an ex-CIA agent who specializes in extractions. Hired by Logan’s aunt, Rox and her partner Marty agree to take on their most difficult case. Penetrating a locked facility is challenging enough, but Logan’s hallucinations work against them, and at times, they’re not even sure they can trust their client.

Yet Rox’s own autism makes her empathize with the teenager, and she’s determined to break him out. As she and Marty plan a rescue, a reporter who’s investigating the psychiatric hospital is brutally murdered, and the clock starts ticking for Logan. Can the Extractors free the boy before his mother silences his secrets once and for all?

It caught me right away

I didn't want to stop reading until I was done. The storyline was unique and had you guessing until the end while the characters were realistic. I would have given it 5 stars if the ending didn't feel rushed. Overall, a wonderful fast read and highly recommended!

This is the first book of the Extractor series for me, and I have to say it’s one of the best by L. J. Sellers.A true page turner.

I like to read any series in order, but this author has a great way making each book a stand-alone. I’ve read her Agent Dallas books out of order, and never felt lost, or that the storyline was repetitive.

No spoilers here, but The Other has some very unforgettable characters. Logan tugs at your heart strings throughout, and you find yourself immersed in the plot to help him.

Very enjoyable read.

This is the third book in the Extractor series and, as with all series, it is best read after the previous books. I think that this is more important for this series than some as, even though the story contained within is complete, Rox is a bit of a complex character so I believe that you would get the best from this book and indeed the series as a whole if you started from book one and read in order.
So, in this book Rox is contacted by a very worried aunt. He nephew Logan is currently being held in a mental hospital, put there by his mother who couldn't handle him as he appears to be on the autism spectrum. With cuts happening in the state, she is also worried as he is about to be moved to a new place. Put that together with rumours that there is also abuse at the facility, and with her own sister in mind, Rox is eager to take the case despite Marty's concerns. But are things really as they seem on face value? When a reporter honing in on some interesting facts is found dead, and the moving date for Logan imminent, can Rox perform her extraction in time to rescue him?
Well this book was a blast from start to finish. It has a bit of everything in it; murder, mystery, intrigue, secrets, lies, the whole shebang and it held my attention nicely throughout. I have already mentioned that Rox is a bit of a complex character, what with her own medical problems and treatment, and she does suffer a wee bit in this book with all that, making her a little bit more vulnerable than usual; tugging on my heartstrings a bit. Marty has his own concerns but between the two of them they manage reasonably well.
The story itself, once we get to the nitty gritty at the end was, as usual for this author, brilliantly plotted and, within my limited experience, well researched. I managed to half guess a few things but was completely gobsmacked at the end when all was finally revealed! Boy, I really didn't see that coming and I read a LOT of this genre book.
Pacing was also very good. One of the things I love about this author, and I have read a lot of her books, is that she doesn't waste words unnecessarily. There is absolutely no padding and the descriptive parts are enough to set scenes without distracting from the story. This means that the story itself goes along at a fair lick throughout.
Characters are also, as usual, well defined and, within the bounds of the story, congruent and believable. Tricky especially in this book due to all the secrets. lies and duplicitous behaviour throughout.
All in all, another cracking addition to the author's already impressive back catalogue. With the ending as it was, I really can't wait to see what the author has in store next for Rox and Marty.

A MUST READ!!

"The Other" is an INTENSE read! It's filled with twists and turns & I could not put it down!

Rox, the Extractor and her step-dad Marty have just taken a new case - a woman, Shay Wilmont wants Rox to "extract" her nephew, Logan from Mt. Angel Psychiatric Hospital. Shay believes Logan is autistic; not mentally ill.

Now begins the planning of how Rox and Marty will get him out of the mental hospital without anyone's knowledge. Will they be successful or will this case be more than what they bargained for?

What happens next is suspenseful, intriguing and heart-breaking. It's a story of deception, mental illness and survival.

L.J. has once again written an outstanding story - the characters - Rox and Marty are people you truly care about. The relationship between them is heartwarming; the love they have for each other is touching. They are always looking out for one another. L.J. has a way of drawing you in - then you're hooked and can't put it down!

I'm a huge fan of her and her books - I've read all of them! She has given me hours and hours of enjoyment!

I hope there's another Extractor story in the future!!

You can NEVER go wrong when you pick up a book by LJ Sellers! The Other is her third book in the Extractor Series. My ‘AHA’ moment came at about the middle of the book. At least, I thought I had it figured out. LOL And I kinda did, but there was a whole lot more to the story than I could even have imagined at that point. I had a little bit of worry toward the end of the book that it might be the last one in the series…a lot of my favorite characters seem to be in some pretty dire situations, namely her boyfriend and step-dad/partner. Rox made a vow at the end of the book—no, I’m not going to say what it was—but I hope she wasn’t serious. Great book. Relatively quick read, maybe because it’s so interesting that you can’t put it down…no, DEFINITELY so interesting that you can’t put it down. Looking forward to the next book in the Extractor Series (and the next Detective Jackson book)!!

I received an ebook copy from Goodreads First Reads. From the book's description and from other reviews, it sounded really great, but upon actually reading it, I was quite disappointed. Too much of the plot gets bogged down in other details, rather than developing and creating suspense about the titular Other. When the big reveal finally comes, it seems rushed and lacking in depth. Some of the plot is too predictable and far-fetched. However, I enjoyed the premise of private detective who specializes in extracting people in difficult situations. Also, very nice to have a main character who is working through her own mental health issues and succeeding.Ultimately, though, it is just an o.k. book, and I will pass on reading the rest of the series.

Like the first book in the series, I feel there are lots of serious issues mentioned so carelessly. Worse still, I actually think the intention was that these issues are being dealt with in a serious manner but it just missed the mark so completely. I personally don’t think you can mention something as serious as sexual abuse, serious personality disorders, etc, so casually. I just don’t think you can drop these issues in as very obvious, surface level and convenient plot devices whilst not exploring them properly.

As well as the above, the other main let down was how clumsy and clunky it was, especially the ‘reveals’. So much so that I wasn’t sure they were supposed to be reveals and the main twist was so utterly ridiculous! Overall, this book is just ok, not great but not the worst.

Her books are straight forward, with unusual endings, having read almost all she has written. A concerned aunt for the well being of an autism child, she feels shouldn’t be in an institution, as the mother is requesting. Logan
wants to free of doctors, medicine and being inside confined.
Then he see the younger boy who looks like him, darting in and out around the trees. He couldn’t mention him to anyone any more, they didn’t believe him. Rox is an extractor and only by reference do they have her number, and her alias name. Telling the aunt that type of place is hard to get them out.
Who is telling the truth, comes into play, as Rox takes the case. Another gripping tale by the author

Not excited about this one

Even though the author is one of the highest rated on Amazon, I don't enjoy her style. The plot is too cozy and cute, with me guessing each of the routine twists as I read. The Rox character is not very deep nor are any other characters in the book. It is written like a very long comic book with a formula and stock plot, action and people. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who needs depth in their reading experience. But it is harmless with little or no vulgar language, non-thought-provoking bits of boring sex, and not much of anything to startle the reader. I am yawning as I write this; even writing a review of the book is tedious.

Mission impossible?

An unlikely duo sets out to rescue an autistic boy from a mental hospital where he is being kept against his will, the events that follow are captivating and believable. Plot twists and turns lead to an unexpected conclusion. The author made me want to read more of her books--high praise.

This book is definitely a good read! And the end...totally surprising! I believe this is L.J.Seller's first adventure into psychological thriller writing and she nailed it! Kept me guessing throughout the story.

A decent plot mediocrely written.

I chose 3 stars due to the inadequate development of some of the key players.
I felt this book needed less detail and more ambiance.
The plot idea was good, but just not written well.

I won a Kindle version of this book as a goodreads giveaway and wanted to write a few words even though I am not obligated to do so. I loved this book just as much as I love the Detective Jackson mysteries. I haven't read the first two in this series but I definitely will.

Clever novel.

A PI with her own slight mental problems gets involved with having to extract a boy with mental problems from a psychiatric hospital. Not an easy task when there are certain people who want secrets to be kept.
Well written and researched making for a good read.

A definite must read

This was a complex, twisted, and intriguing story that will hook you from beginning to end. It's not a story or series that you'll want to miss.
I would recommend this book, series, and author.

First one I've read by L. J. Sellers but it won't be my last.

Fast paced and kept me guessing until the end. Loved it. Wasn't sure where it was going at first but hooked me with it's misdirection and plot shifts.
