Lady Anne Fitzroy, daughter of an ambassador to the Austrian court, returns to England after her father is murdered. Soon, rumors circulate that he committed an act of treason leading to the deaths of thousands of Austrian soldiers. Well‑known for her close assistance to her father, Anne is pressed by more than one zealot to divulge what she knows about his supposedly traitorous designs. One of these men is Nicholas Beckett, the Earl of de Rothesay, who holds Anne’s father responsible for the betrayal of his brother to the French as a spy. Lord de Rothesay’s fierce effort to prove Anne’s father’s guilt is matched only by her passionate determination to prove her father’s innocence. De Rothesay’s prejudice draws her deep resentment and catapults them into a scrimmage of accusation and mistrust. But eventually, with Anne facing charges as an accomplice to treason, she and de Rothesay must join forces in a pact to uncover the truth about her father. Their joint search carries them into the arms of danger and into a change of heart toward each other that neither dared imagine. Can Anne’s enemy become so much more than her friend? I randomly picked this book from the library and was surprised at how much I loved it! A great romantic story with so much danger and wit. It was refreshing to read a proper romance where I didn’t feel like the main character was just being a silly girl.
Murder, mystery, peril, a game of wits, hidden messages, lies, betrayal, deception, traitors, war, terror, secret meetings, growing affection, family, carriage rides, Austria, Napoleon, London, disguises, church, old ruins, horses, gunshots, quick escapes, witty banter, and much more lies within the pages of this book.
Right from the beginning, the reader is thrust into the mystery and peril of Lady Anne Fitzroy's life. Her father was murder a year before and is believed to be a traitor to the crown. Lady Anne knows better, but how can she prove his innocence and patriotism when everything impedes her progress. She must tread carefully because one misspoken word or misstep and one man can bring her world crashing down around her. He has threatened her and her loved ones if she tells of what he has done. He wants information and a couple of her father's items. Items that are crucial to clearing her father's name and not ruining her and her family's reputations along with his being declared a traitor.
Nicholas Beckett, the Earl of de Rothesay, will do anything to find the man responsible for his brother's death. He knows it was Lady Anne's father. Now all he needs to do is to continue his search and he will have enough evidence to prove it. With everything pointing at the man's deception to his country, Nic knows it will just be a matter of time until the war office declares Fitroy an official traitor.
When Lady Anne and the Earl of de Rothesay meet each other in unusual circumstances and keep finding themselves thrust into each other's company, a battle of wits and sharp words ensue. Who will come out triumphant in their biting words? Who will prove they are right as the race against the clock begins. What secrets will they uncover, what other deceptions lie in wait?
Anne and Nic have lots of sparks flying anytime they are in a scene together. Those two take verbal sparring to a whole new level. Very reminiscent of Elizabeth and Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, these two will have to see past their hurts, wounds and pride if they want to prove Anne's father's guilt or innocence. Either verdict will not be discovered if they continue to work against each other. With many outside forces determined to keep them apart, or to harm Anne so she can't share any of her knowledge, Nic finds himself having to protect the one person he absolutely despises.
Be prepared for nonstop mystery and the unfolding of a dangerous plot once you start. I enjoyed the reveals and the connections created between the characters. I found myself guessing who I thought was behind everything, only to turn around and change my previous guess. I did find myself wondering about a couple parts throughout the book that didn't have resolution by the end. There were a few minor inconsistencies and typos throughout the book that pulled me out of the story off and on. But overall, I enjoyed the story, the mystery and the main characters.
I was pretty happy to see another book by this author, having really enjoyed her previous two books and will keep watching for more. My hubby was on a work trip and stopped at my favorite bookstore, bought the book and surprised me with it when he returned home. Yay!
Content: Clean. Some talk about torture, death and war but nothing overly graphic.
In Wanda Luce’s new novel, A Dangerous Affection, Nicholas Beckett, the Earl of de Rothesay has been driven for months by one purpose—to prove Lady Anne Fitzroy’s father a traitor responsible for his brother’s death. When Anne returns to England after her father’s murder, she is as driven as Nicholas to prove her father’s innocence and clear his name. When Anne and Nic meet and match their wills, sparks fly. But are all the sparks fueled by anger?
Anne is an intelligent, courageously strong woman who will disregard the Regency Period’s social protocol to reinstate her father’s good name and protect her family. She is also a beauty, with gardenia-like skin hard for a young man to ignore . . . even Nic. With a physique as powerful as his determination and as strong as his character, Nic is well sought after by female society. Even Anne can’t evade the effects of his masculine scent—musk and orange with a hint of cinnamon. When these two bold characters set out to defy each other, a battle ensues matched only by the inner battle each fights against their ever-increasing attraction for the other.
Luce works her magic once again in A Dangerous Affection by treating the reader to a Pride and Prejudice-like experience of watching Anne and Nic, at once enemies, find compassion and understanding for each other. When Anne and her family are threatened by her father’s accusations, she and Nic join forces to uncover the truth, whatever it may be, and solve a riveting, heart-thumping mystery. Will romance follow? Curl up with this beautifully written and engaging story and find out!

I recently finished a book by Wanda Luce called A DANGEROUS AFFECTION. This is a romance with some meat on it, which I appreciate.
Anne Fitzroy returns to England after her ambassador father's assassination at the hands of a traitor to England. Anne's father is subsequently framed with the betrayal of Austrian troops and English spies to the French in the battle of Ulm. Those wishing to cover their treachery seek not only to prove the ambassador was complicit in the plot, but also that Anne knew about it and is thus a traitor as well.
Unless she uncovers the secret plans and exposes the real traitors, Anne could hang or be transported to Australia by the Crown or be killed to shut her up and the family could fall to ruin and the vicious gossip of the London Ton. Anne is avid to clear her father's name and return the family to safety and good graces. But can she discover the truth before her detractors tar her character with the dreaded name of traitor?
Nicholas, the Earl of de Rothesay already hates the daughter of the man who it is rumored betrayed his brother, a spy, to the French. He is convinced she lied to protect her father at the very least. It's all he can do to look at the woman who stands in the way of his revenge. Eventually, however, he finds that Anne's character speaks for itself, at least to him. Instead of trying to prove she should be hanged for her part in the plot, he changes course.
This book appealed to me on several levels. Ms. Luce has done some exhaustive research on the speech, dress, habits, problems, and happenings of the Regency era, putting us directly in the cross hairs with Anne.
There are a few small things I would have elaborated on, or changed, in this book, but they are small details and didn't detract from my enjoyment of the romp through history, not only through the ballrooms of Britain.
In this suspenseful tale full of intrigue and romance, Anne has the guts to go out and do her own sleuthing, regardless of the considerable danger to her and her sister. In spite of the abuse she endures at the hands of those who want her family's money and to ruin her father, she pushes on to clear the family name. She convinces one of her greatest detractors that not only is she being truthful, but her father is as well.
Five Cuckoo Clocks out of five for this fine book. Thank you, Wanda Luce. Now I must find your other stuff.
What an excellent book, from cover to cover. While I began to have my suspicions who it was that killed Anne's father, the little pieces slowly coming together of the whole puzzle was intriguing and full of depth. A great mystery book with some sweet romance mixed in. I loved Anne and Lord de Rothesay. One of my favorite couples for sure. I can't wait to read more from this author.
Romance - Sweet and Clean Romance ❤ Language - None Violence - Moderate (mostly in what had happened to Anne)
What I appreciate about Wanda's novels is the unique story line placed in my favorite Regency time period. She has created an intriguing novel of suspense and delightful characters. Anne is a strong heroine who although a bit too independent, she can listen to reason. Nic is the perfect brooding hero whose heart is softened by Anne.
I read this in less than a day-I will now read anything that Wanda Luce writes!!! This was such a great story-danger, romance, treason, romance-loved lady and and Lord Rothesay!! Ms. Wanda-please keep writing-I love your books!
