Then you have landed in the right place.

The overall aim of this crash course in Business process modelling BPM is to explore and examine the key concepts, methods, and techniques used in Modelling Business Processes, to build business processes and making informed managerial decisions .

This is part 1 of the two-part series. Business Process Modelling BRM is a term that has gone through various stages of refinement over the years. It started off as a field of studying the efficiency of the Corporate's resources against the time and the motion.

The findings and results of such studying were presented in different forms; the flow chart, functional flow block diagram, Gantt chart, control flow diagram, PERT diagram, and IDEF formats. It was later described as 'the workflow' or an 'integration between the business processes'.

The workflow has gradually peaked to the adoption of business process re-engineering (BPR) and has stepped forward to the present state as the powerful tool, known as the 'business process modelling; which was developed and fully adopted in the early 2000s.

Modelling business processes or the Business process modelling (BPM) is the combination of the notations to give diagrammatic representations of the stages of the processes. It shows the sequence of tasks by the use of events, activity, connecting objects and flow objects to represent the end to end process of any organisation.

The workflow or the sequence aspect of the business process modelling is a significant and essential tool, to the methodology of the management technique. It helps to develop the smooth flow of the business processes. However, exceptional cases may arise in the large-scale organisations where the management bypasses such ideal steps; this is usually the situation when they have to meet a separate desired level of expectation.

BPM applies across different departments in an organisation, ranging from the administration of the processes, coordination of the essential processes, the supportive processes and modelling of the entire operations.

In the larger organisation, the process is analysed thoroughly, documented and presented in more detail, relative to the smaller structures; as the processes in the larger corporates are more cumbersome and complicated.

The smaller company has found this management tool helpful in improving their businesses, capturing missed out opportunities, reducing the running costs to the minimum, delivering improved quality product and meeting the customers’ expectations at the right time.

Business process modelling is widely used (its application) in the organisations for the improvement of the business processes. Various corporates such as the government departments, public and private institutions and corporations, to mention few are increasingly adopting this methodology, to optimise their processes flexibly.

Business process modelling is a management tool adopted by the companies for improving efficiency and quality. It helps to increase transparency and accountability of any structures that may find BPM useful in ensuring effectiveness in the business process.
