Falling Together

Rate this book
Mitch Jackson took a temporary job wrapping gifts at a Manhattan department store so he’d have some extra cash during the holiday season. He didn’t expect to get a bonus in the form of Austin Payne. Austin starts out as just another customer, though a particularly good-looking one, until he asks Mitch to dinner. Their whirlwind romance, touched by the magic of New York in December, soon grows from what could have been only a fling into something more—something like falling in love.

A Shae Conner holiday novella? I was ready to read this even before I read the blurb. I’m a sucker for sweet holiday stories, and Conner delivers in spades. Mitch and Austin have such a connection right from the start that it’s clear to both of them, and the reader, it’s more than just a date or hook up.

There’s a bit of a fairy tale feeling to this short novella in that it’s a perfect confluence of events for the MCs. Their meet cute is adorable and they are both open to more. I loved that when they recognized what they were feeling, they talked about it and were on the same page. Even though there were only about 50 pages to this story, there was no rushing with their romance. They took the time to get to know one another and to know that they were in it for the long haul. I also loved that it ended with an HFN, as it was fitting for the characters and the story. But it was a solid one, and there’s no doubt for the reader that with a bit more time, these two guys will be fully and completely in love.

I was looking for a little bit more character development, especially when it came to Austin. This story is told solely through Mitch’s third person POV, and he’s a great narrator. But as a result, we didn’t get to know Austin as well. Both guys are sweet and big hearted and transparent when talking to each other, but I missed out on Austin’s side of things a bit. In relation to that, Mitch had some worry about their apparent wealth disparities (Austin seemingly comes from a wealthy family) and I’d have liked to see that more directly addressed, since it was weighing on Mitch’s mind.

This was such a sweet little story. And yes, I know we are into spring now, but Christmas can be year round :p . I love that this story was about getting to know you. Getting that connection. Yes there was potent chemistry there but they wanted to take it slow and build something. It's all about the intimacy. Anyone can have sex.

Mitch was hohumming, trying to get through the holiday season as a gift wrapper. Not the best job, but it pays the bills and a little extra. Plus he gets to check out the hot guys that are last minute shopping. What he didn't expect was to lose his functionality by gazing into the bluest eyes he has ever seen. He wraps his gift and thinks he won't see him again. Surprised when he sees him a few days later to wrap another gift. This time he learns his name is Austin. When he sees Austin again, he thinks it's odd because he has no gifts to wrap. No, he wants to take Mitch on a date. *Gasp* What turns out to be a dinner date out ends up as dinner date in. They can't resist the temptation of each other as they kiss and kiss, but both want to take it slow. So they decide to end it there and take more dates. Get to know each other. So that what they are feeling doesn't seem like a fling but more in depth as they are feeling.

Mitch was blown away the minute he caught the gaze of those blue eyes. There was something about him. After he wrapped his gift, he didn't think he'd see him again, but ole blue eyes keeps popping up. And Mitch is so intrigued. When Austin finally comes back to ask for a date, he's so nervous and excited. He feels like he may be a little out of Austin's league, but damn does he want to run his hands all over the man. Each date though, even with the stumbles, are perfect. The chemistry is so intense they can't keep their hands off each other. But both are determined to wait a bit. Make sure this is really what they are feeling. And it's so sweet. They touch, hold hands, run fingers through each others hair. It's so romantic. You can't help but sigh with love at them.

This is such a sweet one. I really enjoyed it. I think you will too.

Mitch is working as a gift wrapper over the holidays to earn some extra money. While working he comes face to face with the “…brightest, clearest, richest blue eyes he’d ever seen.” Attached, of course, to a beautiful man, Austin, who has an emergency wrapping job for a friend. He gets a minute to ogle and then man is gone, only to reappear the following weekend, dreaded Black Friday, with another gift to wrap. While both are the same age, they have a big gap in money. “You’re dating outside your price range.” That can be a big issue.

The guys decide to wait a bit on the physical but they move pretty fast on the emotional. It’s not insta-love, but sort of insta-meet-the-parents. When Mitch gets all paranoid, “Why can’t I meet the family? Is there something wrong with me?” I wanted to shout, “NO! Nothing’s wrong with you but you’ve known this guy a week!”

It’s a lovely little holiday story, fluffy, angst free and easy. And those guys aren’t able to wait all that long for the physical so you get some smexy times.

The blurb says it all—Mitch and Austin are a match made in heaven, and while they try to take it slow and hold off on the physical side of things for as long as they can, the emotional explosion they experience around each other is rapid and intense. Mitch meets Austin when he ends up wrapping a few gifts Austin has purchased. There is an instant connection between the two, and despite the fact that there is a slight age gap and a definite economic gap, the two guys hit it off instantly. But Mitch has been burned before, and he tries to put the brakes on their heightened emotional attraction by slowing things down, dating and trying to get to know one another before falling in to bed with each other. To a degree it works, but before long, the two men realize there is definitely something brewing between them they both want to explore—and that something really could be love.

If you are looking for an angst-free holiday romance, then look no further. Yes, the story might have been a bit long in the tooth when it comes to Mitch worrying he could never be in the same league as Austin, financially, but even that took a back seat to how much these two guys just enjoyed being together. It was so nice just to watch Mitch and Austin get to know each other and begin to fall for each other. While I wouldn’t say this ended with a definite happy ever after, it certainly was a happy-for-now with the real promise that these two fellows were both invested in exploring how deep their feelings could go.

All in all, Falling Together by Shae Connor is a cute holiday romance that will satisfy the sweet tooth in us all.

Falling Together is a sweet, angst-free holiday novella that I really enjoyed reading. It’s a quick read but full of feelings and descriptions in every paragraph.
Mitch has recently graduated college and is still deciding what he wants to do about grad school when he takes a temporary Christmas season job wrapping gifts in a New York department store. I kind of snickered to myself at the thought of a good looking man behind the gift wrap counter, and apparently Austin had the same thoughts. When Austin came back for another giftwrap the next day Mitch took the bold step to ogle Austin’s good looking body and beautiful blue eyes.
It didn’t take long for both men to find near insta-attraction between them. A trip to the ice rink where Mitch revealed a vulnerable side when he fell and hurt his ankle, and several episodes of eating ethnic foods were all it took for them to move from the frigid sidewalks of New York to a warm bed.
I really like Shae Conner’s style of writing holiday stories. She allows the men to discuss differences in religion and food so they get accustomed to the fact that while their backgrounds are different their interest in each other is much the same.
This book ends in an HFN but leaves room for it to develop into an HEA very soon. Recommended as a holiday read.

Nice novella, though not to memorable for me. It lacks angst for those who look for that kind of read. I actually wish that the economic-gap between them is more explored to give the story a bit of an "oomph" to it.
