Life is a funny thing... As much as we like to think we have control over it, our paths have already been laid out for us. So what do you do when you have been forced down a path you never wanted to take, and a new path opens up? A path where you could be happy and safe? A path that would lead you to everything you ever wanted, fulfill every fantasy you've ever had, but at the risk of losing your daughter? It's not a risk worth taking. But life has other ideas... Being a mother and a wife wasn't high on my list of priorities, however I found myself with a baby and a husband when I was just eighteen years old. Nine years on and I only stay through utter fear of losing my precious little girl. My husband is controlling, cheating and abusive, but he is also powerful and would take her if I try to leave. My plan is simple. I stay until she is old enough that I can leave without him taking her. But then I meet him. He rescues me. And everything changes. He is beautiful, kind, sexy, just perfect. And in another life, he would be mine... But this is the life I have chosen and I have to stick to the plan. However much I want him. Need him. Crave him. I have to keep away. Until life suddenly strikes and throws me head-on into his arms, his bed, and into a whole world I never knew existed. One where all of my dreams and fantasies can become a reality. Another Life is an erotic romance and the first book in a trilogy. Mature content, for readers 18+

50 shades of grey, released in 2011, was the dawn of a new era of popular erotica. It has inspired hundreds of authors and novels in the years following its success. I have tried to read them though they often left me uninspired, disappointed by the lack of plot and character depth. After a recommendation from a friend I decided to pick up Another Life by D Gourlay.
The story follows Rachel, a woman at breaking point thanks to years of abuse from her controlling husband. Through the cutest of meet cutes she finds herself bumping into the very dashing Tad, millionaire businessman and straight up hottie.
This is where the story differs greatly from its predecessors, Rachels story follows her gaining the strength to leave her abuser instead of marrying them. Gourlay writes the story of domestic violence in a brutal yet truthful way, whilst the story may be extreme you can see the hints of real life in her husbands behaviour.
The supporting cast of characters is another shining gem in this book. Rachels parents are ever present, a rarity it seems in many books and they bring the often needed light hearted comedy to an otherwise dark book. The same can be said for Rachels best friend and her daughter.
It should be noted of course that this is self published work and with that you can expect to find some very minor spelling and grammar errors. I found this didn't distract me from the story very much and is absolutely forgiveable.
Now, I can hear the people wanting to know the dirty deets and I can tell you that this book will not disappoint. The sex scenes feel natural in the way they start, nothing is a bigger turn off for me than characters going from chatting about dinner to a full on sex sesh in a heartbeat. Gourlay understands that women need to be worked up and that sexual gratification isn't instant, a startlingly rare quality in erotica.

The plot to Another Life was interesting.
However I sometimes got whiplash with Rachel - one minute she's Betty Crocker thinking about her dream kitchen and baking all day and the next minute she's Betty Boop having sex with her neighbor who she loves but just met two days ago! It's definitely an insta love romance.
She's in a loveless marriage with an abusive relationship, she's confused and lonely. Then enters Thaddeus or Tad, millionaire who's lost his brother recently and is struggling with the loss. It appears that they're both searching to find something that neither knew they were looking for.
The book itself has grammar issues that may be more of a difference due to a continental divide and I'm not really sure whether there's a right or wrong answer to it but for me it was a distraction at first. But once I was able to get past it I was more able to get into the story itself. The plot was suspenseful and riveting however I'm anxious to see what more could come up their story that would call for a second book. However, there are unanswered questions regarding what really transpired at the house, what happened to her husband in Derbyshire and how will Amelia cope with thr changes in her life that are inevitable. I hope all these questions are answered and more in the next book!
