Modern Principles: Macroeconomics

Rate this book
The title, Modern Principles, refers to a progressive approach to economic modeling and applications that allows for more realistic interpretation of today's world events.

Mirroring the authors' successful blog, the text eschews boxed features to focus on the writing behind compelling examples, key concepts, and applications.

An emphasis on incentives underscores how economics is about human behavior and how economics helps us understand why we do what we do (in other words, the decisions we make in the face of incentives in the real world). Covers of the franchise titles feature multiple hands to emphasize the power of the Invisible Hand, a key economic concept that refers to the power of incentives (and was coined by Adam Smith).

Tyler Cowen (born January 21, 1962) occupies the Holbert C. Harris Chair of economics as a professor at George Mason University and is co-author, with Alex Tabarrok, of the popular economics blog Marginal Revolution. He currently writes the "Economic Scene" column for the New York Times and writes for such magazines as The New Republic and The Wilson Quarterly.

Cowen's primary research interest is the economics of culture. He has written books on fame (What Price Fame?), art (In Praise of Commercial Culture), and cultural trade (Creative Destruction: How Globalization is Changing the World's Cultures). In Markets and Cultural Voices, he relays how globalization is changing the world of three Mexican amate painters. Well-written introductory textbook. Authors present easy-to-understand examples as well as connections to real-world situations. Questions at the end of each chapter solidify intuition about the content. Complimentary videos are available for free online. Top-notch work by talented economists.

Accessible and clear textbook. Good for having an overview of the macro mechanisms, doesn't go into the details
