Yvonne Rainer was born in San Francisco in 1934. She trained as a modern dancer in New York and was one of the founders of the Judson Dance Theater in l962, a movement that proved to be a vital force in modern dance and art in the following decades. Since 1972, Rainer has completed seven feature-length films. She has received numerous awards and fellowships for her work, including two Guggenheim Fellowships (1969, 1988), a MacArthur Fellowship (1990-95), and a Wexner Prize (1995). A memoir, Feelings are Facts: a Life, was published in 2006.
Yvonne Rainer was a crucial presence in the New York performance scene of the 1960s and ‘70s. In the process, she helped to define something that would become known as Post-Modern Dance. Indeed, her work is often cited as part of the redefining of culture in the second part of the 20th century. This book, originally published by MIT Press, helped to bring her ideas and work to a broader audience, and is therefore one of the crucial artistic documents of our time. It has been out of print for a long time, so its reprint by Primary Information is most welcome. Rainer would subsequently turn to film as her primary medium of expression, a process just beginning when this book was published. (“The Man Who Envied Women” would come in 1985, and “Privilege” a decade later.) Anyone who wants to understand the deep cultural changes that the 1960s brought to the performing arts needs to engage with this book.
