Ugly Stick Saloon #10

Boots & the Rogue

Rate this book
There’s more than one way to feed a hungry man.

Brody McFarlan left home eight years ago, after he and his younger brother had a falling-out over a girl. When a frantic phone call sends him racing home, he’s stunned to learn the truth. Mom isn’t sick, she’s threatening to sell the ranch—unless he and his brothers get busy settling down.

With Mom on strike, Brody hesitantly settles in to help—and find a replacement cook before he starves.
Fired from her last job, Jessie Taylor is forced to ride out on her horse, leaving her car behind. Hot, tired and homeless, she stumbles onto the Ugly Stick Saloon, grateful to pick up a spatula in trade for a burger to fill her belly and a much-needed rest for her road-weary mount.

One bite of Jessie’s tasty burger, and Brody offers the rough-and-tumble blonde a job and a stall. It doesn’t hurt that she’s sexy as hell, and he hungers for a taste of her sweet pink mouth. The only bur under his saddle is the grudge he still carries…and the fear that his brother will once again swoop in to steal the pretty filly right out from under him.

Due to his mom’s ultimatum, Brody McFarlan is back but as soon as he can change her mind he’s heading right back out in this captivating western romance.

Hot, tired and homeless, Jessie Taylor is happy to trade food and rest for work and the reader can’t help but get caught up in all the turbulence as this firecracker worms her way into Brody’s heart. The attraction sizzles and the sex scenes are steaming but the relationship is a hot mess as Brody fears that his brother will once again swoop in to steal what is his and the emotional angst captures the hearts as they both struggle to overcome the barriers to their hearts. The characters are strong, compelling and will charm your boots off while the fast paced, smooth flowing plot captivates readers as Mrs. McFarlan manipulate her three boys every which way but loose and the well written scenes and details full of suspense, turmoil and romance draws the readers in and lasso’s their hearts.

The Ugly Stick Saloon strikes gold again with another sizzling and entertaining read that I just couldn’t put down and I can’t wait for my next visit.

Shelly's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

This is the 10th book in the Ugly Stick Saloon series and it was a great book.

Brody is racing home after receiving a frantic call from his estranged younger brother telling him his Mom is sick, only Mom isn’t sick, she is threatening to sell the ranch if he and his brothers don’t settle down and start giving her grandbabies. In his search for food, because Mom is on strike, he is knocked out by the striking Jessie at the Ugly Stick Saloon.

Jesse is down on her luck after being fired from her last job and all she has is her horse and the hope to find a place to call home when she comes upon the Ugly Stick Saloon and is offered a job for the night in the hopes of finding something more for her and her horse. While cooking she is offered a proposition from Brody to be there cook at the ranch while Mom is on strike, only she isn’t the best of cooks. But when the sparks start to fly she has a hard time keeping her hands off her boss and she doesn’t think Brody is the settling down type to stick around.

I loved the interaction with all the characters and coming to realize that what happened years ago was probably for the best and to forgive and move on. It was a great read, as always by Myla Jackson, love her books.

Jessie Taylor was a girl with her horse who was just looking for a place to call home. You see her mom left them when she was 4. Her daddy did the best he could but he was a foreman on a large spread. The thing was they didn’t own the house that she grew up in. It was part of the perks of the job.
So, when her father had a heart attack 2 years ago she had to vacate the home. From there out she had been looking for a decent job. She was more comfortable doing outdoor so called guys work on a ranch than indoor girl stuff. Well, it turns out she had to leave this last job on short notice. Do to the owner and his making passes at her all the time.
She always deflected his advances but this time they were caught during the cat and mouse fight. So, she was the one fired because the wife said so. Since she didn’t have a trailer to take her horse she rides him off the ranch after she collects what little she could carry in a duffle bag. After 8 hours of riding trying to get the farthest away from her old boss as she could and his old haunts. She ends up behind the Ugly Stick Saloon.
She needed to get her and her horse Scout some water. When the back door opens and the very pregnant owner sees her. Audrey Anderson says if she tosses the trash bag in the bin she had been dragging out into the trash she would pay her $20.00 and the horse and she could have all the water they wanted. Of course that is a no brainer Jessie does it for nothing but the water. Once inside Audrey hires her for the night to B-B-Q since they are short a cook.
That is when she meets Brody McFarlan the long lost brother to Colin and Angus who moved away eight years ago. With his mama laying down the law they needed a new cook since their mama’s not cooking for them. When he sees that Jessie can cook B-B-Q he gets an idea. But first he is hungry so he stands in line but this big huge guy gets there first. Jessie has her back to them so the big guy says he wants some food. She looks over her shoulder and states that they needed to sit down that the waitresses will wait on them and that she can’t give them the food from where they are at they were for other customers.
She was able to handle herself and the waitress came to her aide too. The whole time Brody had been checking her out and how sexy she looking in her Annie Oakley costume.
But back to business he wants to hire her. But he uses the wrong wording and she punches him in the eye and knocks him out cold. The brothers are laughing at him but thinks she will be perfect, after the punch he’s not so sure. But when Chemistry hits and they kiss he is sunk.
The next morning does not go as planned she burns the pancakes but their mama on the sly helps her out. Their chemistry only gets bigger but he had promised not to kiss her again. He does whisper in her ear, “You can’t cook can you?”
This is a very cute short. Sexually charged yet not overly erotic yet you feel what they feel for each other. This has a family saga which you know I love and the characters are extremely loveable and funny. I give this 4 stars. Provided by Netgalley.com.

The Ugly Stick Saloon series is a fun steaming hot series that is always an enjoyable read. I have been looking forward to the next story in this series to see how the McFarlan brothers handle that demand their mother made. She wants her boys to settle down and start producing her some grandchildren. She's not afraid to use a little blackmail to encourage those boys to get their rear ends in gear!

Brody McFarlan returns home upon his brother's request. When he arrives home and doesn't find what he was told, well let's just say that he has questions and someone better to start answer them quickly!

Brody is a little hesitant to trust again. He's been burned by a relationship and his brother. So when he finds the new lady in town very attractive, he takes his time showing how he feels.

Jessie Taylor is one of those characters that I admired from the beginning. She makes an very interesting entrance into the story. Jessie has had so many cases of bad luck that she is in need of some good luck and a few good friends. The folks of Ugly Stick Saloon is just what she needs. I love how everyone sticks together and is always willing to help each other and anyone else in need.

Brody falls for Jessie at first bite, of hamburger that is. Then he gets the rotten end of the stick when Jessie misunderstand his offer. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. It was so funny but poor Brody gets more then he was bargaining for. After they get pass the initial misunderstanding the attraction between these two is intense. The tension between these leads to some smoldering hot scenes with some major fireworks.

I love series because it gives me a chance to see what all my "friends" are up to and what has been going on in their lives since the last book. I also love the family interaction in this book. I have to say that Mrs. McFarlan is quite the lady. She is welcoming to Jessie and takes her under her wing. She may do just a little matchmaking along the way, just a little. She certainly has put a little motivation behind her sons and she just might be having a little fun watching them handle her ultimatum.

Boots and the Rogue is part of the Ugly Stick Saloon series, however I think you would be able to read it as a stand alone just fine. I don't think you would feel like you are missing any information or behind the scenes details at all. Ms. Jackson does a great job of creating a fun series but also making each book stand alone in case you discover a book in the middle of the series.

Speaking of Ms. Jackson's talent. This lady is one of my favorite authors for a reason. She does an great job writing a fun story with alot of great characters that keep me entertained and flipping pages.

Overall I really enjoyed this visit to Ugly Stick Saloon and I can't wait to return again soon. There is one brother left that needs his story told and I can't wait to see how it goes. I will impatiently be waiting Myla Jackson's next release in this series.

I was given the opportunity to read this great book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Boots and the Rogue.

Having reviewed Boots and the Bachelor a few months back, I was excited for the chance to read Boots and the Rogue. It had been a couple of years since I had read any books in the Ugly Stick Saloon and I just happened upon the series again at the start of the McFarlan brothers being lovingly blackmailed by their mother to settle down and start a family – otherwise she was going to sell the ranch. After watching Angus reconnect with a woman from his past and fall in love, I was excited to read about the next brother, especially once I realized that it was the prodigal son’s story.

After receiving a call from his brother, Brody McFarlan rushes home in fear that his mother is dying. While he is relieved to learn that his mother is fine, he learns that the reason why Colin lied to him to get him back to the Rafter M Ranch is almost as dire. Dumbfounded doesn’t even begin to cover Brody’s reaction when he finds out that his mother plans to sell the ranch unless her sons demonstrate that they are indeed interested in their heritage by establishing a long-term relationship. Although he has no intention of getting involved with a woman, Brody plans to spend his time at the ranch convincing his mother to let go of her foolish notion so that he can return to Seattle and his brothers can continue to work the ranch. But when he meets Jessie at the Ugly Stick Saloon’s barbecue, he finds that leaving Temptation, Texas isn’t as high on his list of priorities as it was. Unfortunately, past betrayals make it harder for him to admit what he wants – Jessie and Texas.

Boots and the Rogue was a heck of a lotta fun to read. Jackson combines just the right amount of story and sex to keep the book entertaining in oh so many ways. I was stunned by the details of what led to Brody leaving home and cutting ties with his brother, Colin, years earlier. That said, I’m looking forward to reading Boots and the Heartbreaker next because I suspect I will learn even more about that situation. The passion between Brody and Jessie is all consuming and this leads to several intense scenes – one of which was interrupted in time to keep it from becoming public. I really liked Angus’s reaction to his brother’s talent when he happened upon him painting because I believe it’s what enabled Brody to come clean to his mother and Colin and begin entertaining the idea of a future with Jessie in Temptation. I thought the ending was perfect for Jessie and Brody and I’m now off to read the next book in the series so I can see Colin get his happy ending. As Mrs. McFarlan said, “Two down. One to go.”

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Oh, my goodness! I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on one of the best contemporary western romance series, “best” and “romance” being the key words here. Boots and the Rogue is truly a romance, HEA ending and all (that’s not a spoiler, it’s true by definition).
Brody left the family’s Texas ranch eight years ago to follow his dream of being an artist, a career he has kept secret from his family. His brother Colin had moved in on Brody’s fiancé, leaving Brody with nothing to stay in Temptation, Texas for. Without his late father, running the ranch had fallen to Brody’s mother and two brothers, Angus and Colin.
Well, Mom is sick and tired of taking care of two of her sons, grown men that they are, and gone on strike. No more cooking, cleaning, or doing anything other than what she wants to do. She is also threatening to sell the ranch and move to Florida if all three of them don’t get married and start families of their own, thus, in her mind, acting like adults. Panicked, Colin lies and tells Brody to get himself home right now because Mom is dying. She’s not, but his ruse works.
Jessie, who has no family or friends, has been kicked off the Texas Panhandle ranch where she worked, able to leave with little except a backpack containing a change of clothes and her horse. Exhausted, she winds up at the Ugly Stick Saloon asking for water for herself and her horse. What a lucky place to land because she immediately is offered a one-night job flipping burgers, and it’s there she meets the three brothers who desperately need a cook, what with Mom on strike and all. It’s definitely not love at first sight for Jessie and Brody, and in fact is a rocky road to admitting to themselves that there is anything there to keep either of them in Temptation, Texas.
I loved watching Brody and Jessie fall in love and overcome the barriers to their HEA that they themselves set in place. Brody’s mom tries to be match maker but even that isn’t entirely successful. Let me tell you, the ending to this romance is pure sweetness and brought tears to my eyes. Myla Jackson can sure put words together that just wrings the emotion out of a reader. This is book 10 in a series but can be read as a stand alone short novel. That said, I have a treat ahead of me with nine books to read to enjoy the romances of all the characters who are part of the Ugly Stick Saloon world. If you are already a fan, get this one right away because it’s delightful. Just as a hint, Colin isn’t married at the end and Mom’s still threatening to sell the ranch so there is another story to tell! For that matter, Mom may have her own prospects. Lots of romance going on in Temptation, Texas and at the Ugly Stick Saloon.

Arriving at the family ranch after driving twenty-five hours to get there, Brody McFarlan can’t believe that his brother has lied to him about their mother’s health to get him to come home. When he learns the truth that she’s threatening to sell the family ranch if he and his brothers don’t marry and have a child on the way in less than two months, he’s less than thrilled. Even worse, his mother has gone on strike from cooking, so he needs to find someone to replace her and Jessie seems just perfect for the job.

Fired from her job, Jessie Taylor had to choose between her car and her horse. She couldn’t take both with her. However, there wasn’t really any choice to it. The horse would win every time, considering it was a gift from her father. Having nothing but her horse and the clothes on her back, she rides for a while until pulling up just outside the Ugly Stick Saloon where she immediately accepts a job as a cook for the evening. When a cowboy propositions her, she takes his words the wrong way at first. But when she finally hears what he wants, she accepts his job offer.

Having read all the books in this series so far, I’ve got to say that this one has been my favorite to date. Both the plot and dialogue are well-written and the back stories of both characters make for an interesting read as Brody comes home for the first time in eight years and Jessie finally feels like she’s got somewhere she can belong. The moment Brody and Jessie meet is absolutely hilarious. Who knew that a woman could throw a punch hard enough to knock the hero to the ground? Then again, Jessie comes off the tough girl, yet there’s a vulnerability to her that could easily be taken advantage of if she wasn’t so careful.

As for the sex scenes, they’re very passionate and extremely sensual. Brody is patient and accepting of the fact that Jessie hasn’t been with many men and it’s great that he takes his time with her to make sure she enjoys the romance just as much if not more than he does. What I liked so much about Jessie was how easily she fit into the family. It was like she’d known the McFarlan family forever. While with Brody, I liked that he finally found a way to forgive his brother after having been angry at him for so long.

Overall, Ms. Jackson has added another great addition to this series and I can’t wait to see what is in store for Brody’s brother, Colin, who may finally have a chance with the woman that came between him and his brother. I would recommend this series to fans of sexy cowboys that know how to show a woman how to have a good time; whether it is in the bedroom or out of it.

Brody McFarlan races home after he gets a phone call that his mom is sick. But then he learns the truth, mom isn't sick, but she's put the hammer down and is threatening to sell her ranch. She wants him and his brothers to settle down and give her some grandbabies or the ranch goes! She figures if they don't want the legacy of the ranch, she doesn't need the hassles. She'd rather settle into something less stressful, like a condo. With mom on strike, the brothers go in search of food and end up at the Ugly Stick Saloon. One glance at the sweetness cooking the burgers in her Annie Oakley costume and Brody is bewitched.

Jessie Taylor is down on her luck. After being fired from her last job that was not her fault, all she has to her name is a few clothes and her beloved horse, Scout. She happens upon the Ugly Stick Saloon for some much needed water and she strikes up a conversation with Audrey, the very pregnant owner of the Ugly Stick. Audrey offers her job running the grill for the BBQ tonight since they are short a cook. Jessie accepts. When the boys see Jessie and have a taste of her burgers, Brody decides they need to hire her as their ranch cook or they will surely starve. When he tries to offer her a job, he uses the wrong wording and Jessie punches him in the eye. His brothers think its funny but now Brody isn't sure about her. After he clears the air and their chemistry flares, just like dinner, he's done! Jessie needs the job but aside from the grill, she can't cook! She vows instead to make herself indispensable.

Book ten in the Ugly Stick Saloon series, Boots and the Rogue is a fun read! The characters are loveable and the brother's are amusing to say the least! Not overly dramatic, it's funny, and very sexy, the story has something for everyone! I know I enjoyed my time on the ranch!

3.5 stars/3.5 flames

Love is never easy…

Brody McFarlan was dreading it but his mother needed him. With that, he was forced to go back home for the first time in years to deal with family – especially the brother who had betrayed him. Thank goodness his mother wasn’t sick as he had been told but that just made the situation even worse.

“…his mother had gone off her rocker with crazy threats.”

With his mom on strike and sticking to her guns, Brody needs some time to change her mind. She couldn’t sell the family ranch, could she? Though she could certainly stop working, which meant they were going to starve or kill themselves with their own cooking. Luckily, a chance encounter has Jessie Taylor fitting the bill nicely to solve the cooking crisis. She would make sure they didn’t starve plus she was very easy on the eyes as well. Jessie, on the other hand, wasn’t sure how she felt about her new job, or her sexy employer, but she didn’t have much of a choice. Hopefully, things would just settle down without any more drama. Yah, wishful thinking…

I love this series full of characters who are sexy and funny and make the extraordinary out of the ordinary. This instalment fits right in as the humour, emotion and sexiness vie for ‘my favourite thing’ in the latest Ugly Stick Saloon outing. Brody is trying to deal with one thing after another – his mother is dating, really??? – and Jessie, while beautiful and sexy as heck, is a distraction he does not want. Jessie may feel the same but her heart quickly has other ideas. She is dealing with her own life crisis so a case of unrequited love is something she does not need. Cupid is not taking no for an answer though and with chaps and crops to distract, well they really don’t have a chance…

A wonderful mix of love and life in a story I just want to wrap myself in, I hope there are more stories to come in the series. I know someone’s brother needs a girl…

This story was a great read! I had fun getting to know these characters better and I absolutely loved them. Brody and Jessie are great! They are very well written and complete characters. Brody has come rushing back to the ranch because he gets a frantic call about his mother that turns out just to be a ruse to get him there. He hasn't been back much because of catching his brother with his fiance and then becoming an artist in the city. His family doesn't know that he paints at all or that that is what he makes a living on. Jessie has been running a border stable and being taken advantage of by the owner. The owner also continually hits on her and tries to force the issue but Jessie has been able to hold him off until he wife catches him doing it and blames Jessie so she's fired and isn't given much chance to get anything she owns. She doesn't want to lose her horse so she has to leave her car behind and take the horse. She ends up at the Ugly Stick Saloon and roped into BBQing the hamburgers for the rodeo get together. It lands her a job as the cook on the McFarlan ranch since their mom is on strike.

I loved the way that the two interact and how they build their relationship. The sex is hot when it happens and in the meantime there is a lot of sexual tension between the two. I really liked how the story flowed together and how the action happened. It felt natural and real. I loved getting to see the other characters from the series in this story again. It's a pretty quick read but very enjoyable. Can't wait for more!

***A gifted copy was provided by the author for my honest review****

Brody gets himself back to the family ranch after his younger brother ,Colin tells him his mom is sick. When he gets home, he finds out it was ruse for her to tell him of her master plan- she wants dem grandbabies. She has said its time for her kids to settle down and give her grandbabies or she is selling the ranch because the way she sees it, if they do not care about the “legacy” then she can just up and sell and not worry about it further anymore. Then his mother goes on strike, leaving Brody and his brother to tale care of themselves.
Jessie Taylor is s sweet girl, who is having a run of bad luck. She lost her last job and is now in town trying to find a new job. Into town she comes with only a few pieces of clothes and her horse. She meets Audrey who gives her a chance to cook for one night when she runs into Brody who offers her a job as cook for them. There was a misunderstanding at first but after going to the ranch to work, they started getting close and feelings start to come out. It is a wonderful , short story to see two people who find their way to love. I cant wait to read other books in this series. It was an enjoyable story.

If your taste in romance is burning hot then this is the book for you. This is the tenth book in the Ugly Stick Saloon Series by Myla Jackson.
Brody left home eight years ago after he and his brother had a falling out over a girl, but as soon as he receives a frantic phone call concerning his mother he drops everything and heads home.
When he gets there he is surprised to find out that his mother isn't sick, but wants to sell the ranch unless he and his brothers settle down and give her grand-babies.
Jessie Taylor is homeless after being fired from her last job and wanders into town with just a few belongings and riding on her horse. She finds work at the local bar for the night in order to pay for a meal, but after Brody takes one bite of the burger that Jessie cooks up he hires her as the ranch cook.
Almost immediately their attraction for one another heats up and they both find themselves overwhelmed and at a loss for where their relationship goes from here.

I was given an ARC for an honest review. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

I recieved this book as an ACR for an honest review. I love the Ugly Stick Saloon series and this is book 10. Each story just makes you fall more in love with the series and the cowboys and girls who live there. Brody left home 8 years ago after his brother sleeped with is bride to be. Now he is back after a call from his brother saying his mother is very sick. Yea, she is sick, sick of her sons being single and not at home. Jessie just lost her job, her home and her car all because of a misunderstanding, and a dirtbag playboy. Now all she has is a duffle bag and her horse. What is a girl to do but to ride off into the night until she finds a place to stay. Lucky for her she finds Ugly Stick Saloon, fairygod mothers have nothing on this place. Recommend highly to all romance readers. Can't wait for the next book to come out. Happy Reading. Make a sandwich and settle in.

Not only have those McFarlan boys been give an ultimatum by their mother, she has gone on strike from cooking too. Brody returns home when he receives an urgent message from his brother Colin that his mother is sick. He's not happy about what's really going on, but the boys need to eat and none are very good at cooking. The solution: hire a cook. He hires Jessie Taylor. Jessie isn't the best cook around but she really needs this job. She needs to make herself indispensable.

I have loved reading stories in the Ugly Stick Saloon Series. These McFarlan boys' stories are fun reads. Nothing better than a little motivation to find love. And there's always some love to be found somewhere around The Ugly Stick Saloon.

This is the first of the Ugly Stick Saloon series books that I have read and I am totally hooked. I love a good cowboy story and this one hit all the buttons for me. There was steamy moments shared between two people who longed for someone to call home.

I really loved Jessie who had lost so much and wanted so little. She came to the saloon looking for a job and found more than that. Brody came home to find that his mom was going to sell the ranch unless he and his brothers settled down. He had left years ago because of a betrayal and isn't sure he can stay for that same reason. When he hired Jessie to cook he had no idea that she would rock his world. I really enjoyed their story.

I give Boots and the Rogue 4 hearts!

Brody McFarlan is lured back to his family ranch under false pretenses by his younger brother, Colin. He had been away for 8 years, and when their Mother was threatening to sell the place, his brother got him back there the only way he could ... by telling him their Mom was sick.

As soon as he's back in town, he meets Jessie Taylor, who is broke and homeless, so he takes her home with him to be the new cook at the ranch. Day after day their attraction grows. Can they resist each other? Can the brothers convince their Mom to keep the family ranch? Will Brody decide he can't leave town again? Read to find out!

This is the first book in the series that I have read. Brody is tricked into going home. Once there, he realizes he needs to help on the ranch while his mother insists he and his brothers settle down, get married, and have kids. Jessie shows up on her horse, hungry and tired. Jessie gets hired as the cook, and Jessie and Brody have a mutual attraction. But will his brother steal her away? He can't help but fear this happening again. The chemistry is amazing between Jessie and Brody. This was a great book, and I highly recommend it!

The 10th in the Ugly Stick Saloon series. Mom wants her 3 sons wedded within 2 months or she's selling the ranch. The oldest brother has already found his intended, but doesn't follow through because he's afraid he won't have a home to offer. Brody rushes home when his estranged younger brother indicates their Mother is ill. (She's not). He stumbles across Jess on his first day back and magic happens. He fights it, but ends up giving in in the end.

This is the 10th book in the Ugly Stick Saloon series and I absolutely loved it. This is about Brody and Jessie, she is out of work homeless and only has her horse to call her own. She gets hired to cook for Brody and his brothers and they start to fall in love. This is a fun, sexy, romantic story that I absolutely loved. Two brothers down and one to go and I can't wait to read his story.

Brody hadn’t been home since he and his brother had a falling out, when he get the word that his mom is sick he rushes back home only to learn she is fine and prepared to sell the ranch if he and his brother don’t get married soon. Will these brothers end up starving or will their mom get the grandbabies she longs for. Fun and sexy, a great addition to this wonderful series. Loved it!

ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A fun, hot and sweet, erotic story from Jackson. I loved the layers that she managed to get into this short read.

Good ugly stick book

Another good ugly stick book. Contains love, past hurts, forgiveness, and new friends. This is a quick read with love that survives wrong assumptions.
