It said “read” when I went to update this but I do not remember reading it, nor were there any of my telltale marks where I write what lines I liked or what poems spoke to me, so I’m pretty sure I hadn’t read this before.
I took classes with Peter Wild at the University of Arizona during my bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing (Poetry focus). Actually, I was in his last full class—he passed away a week into the next semester. I remember his guiding hand as we tried a variety of poetic forms, instead of simply letting it all be free or blank verse poems all semester. I truly appreciated the way he made me see the beautiful way creativity and interesting ideas can come from the constraints.
This collection has some lovely pieces, and his imagery is full of intriguing ideas, bolstered by some interesting enjambments and spacing. There were many poems that I just let fall over me, and while I didn’t always mark them as favorites I could feel them as I read. “Incident with Villa” was my favorite section, but my favorite piece was very much “Breaking Down, Beginning Again”. These two lines really struck me:

by the hair the sun pulls me out of my flesh; I dangle, all roots.

Absolutely beautiful. Glad I went back and found this collection of my former teacher.
