Imagine an old automobile, a car worth millions, lost and forgotten in NY.
Legendary con man Leroy Logan doesn’t have to imagine—he created the story himself, decades ago. Now he’s ready to cash in.
With Dani Silver, the grifter’s daughter, Leroy’s got a plan to skim millions. It’s a sure thing…until the homicidal loan shark horns in…and the crooked attorney who sees a way to take it all away.
Can Dani and her crew of misfits pull off the con of the century? Doesn’t seem likely, does it?
With many years of planning, will the greatest con man in the world be able to pull it off?
This was the first book I have read by this author and although it is the second book in the series (I do want to read the first), it worked fine as a standalone. Since it was a different genre than I usually read, I was totally taken in from the very beginning and was thoroughly entertained and engrossed. The best con man in the world Leroy Logan has been chased by the FBI for years and even Interpol was after him. His daughter Dixie a/k/a Dani and many other names, has taken after her father. This book has so many twists and turns and cons on top of cons with totally crazy fun characters that you can't stop turning the pages to see what will happen next. Added into the mix, there is a former priest, Father Tom, the mob, a crooked attorney and the original marks, a haughty, greedy, wealthy, living above their means brother and sister who share a house in their own separate wings, but can't stand each other each wanting to own the multi-million dollar Brugatti, a car with dubious value but part of the main con which Leroy had set up for years until he was ready to cash in. And he needed his daughter and the motley crew with their own illicit talents to help him pull it off. Can the ultimate Con succeed? Read and see! I definitely did not expect the ending. I received and ARC from the author, but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
My first Duane Lindsay book has been the best book I have read in years. I was hooked from the first chapter and the rollercoaster ride only stopped at the end.
The con game is relatively shrouded in mystery and this book blows the con artists lives open in a way I never expected. Dixie, daughter of Leroy Logan, the most wanted conman alive and still never been caught. Leroy has laid the groundwork for the best long con ever tried. The only thing he needs to pull it off is money, lots of it. Oh, and a team. His team is scattered, literally. Some as ashes, some in nursing homes and others in graves. Dixie has money but she'll never go for it, unless he cons her.
I never give spoiler reviews. That is all I will say about the plot. I will tell you that the book is well worth your time. It's funny, poignant and a slice of life us straight folks could only fantasize about. The ending even shows an altruistic side to someone most wouldn't believe possible.
This author has an imagination that knows no boundaries. The ultimate conman has set up the con to top all cons, The Ghost Coach. The Grifter's Daughter, Dani and her crew of misfits all have certain talents and all will be needed for this con to be a success. Now all they need are marks... These books are a delight to read, funny, suspenseful, and they keep the reader guessing until the very last page. The authors mention of real people and events from the past, make this book seem real and more interesting.
I received this book for free in exchange for my review. That is NOT why I am giving this book a 5 star review. I previously read “The Rag, the Wire & the Big Store, Pt 1” by this author. I enjoyed that book so much, I was very eager to read more of the adventures of Leroy & Fast Kate. The “Ghost Coach” did not disappoint me! I love the detail the author puts into everything in this book, from the clothing, cars, places scenes take place and culture and history of the day, to the smallest details of how the characters look, dress, act and speak. In addition, the details of the plots are very well-planned, intriguing and keep one on the edge of one’s seat, waiting to see what happens next. I was constantly surprised by what did happen next. These stories are very interesting and thrilling to read! I will now go back and read the book that came before this one, “The Grifter’s Daughter”. Can’t wait to see how the heroine got to where she was at the beginning of “The Ghost Coach”! If I could, I would give this book more than 5 stars!
Interesting concept for a novel: a motley but very talented crew of grifters led by the elderly king of cons and his temperamental but cunning and beautiful blonde daughter (she is the protagonist) set out to pull the greatest con of all time. This involves an urban legend of a missing classic old auto coveted by all wealthy car collectors. (You know -- the Jay Leno types.)
The grifting team were likeable enough, but the flow of the novel was choppy for me, personally. We get vignette after vignette from the grifter's daughter's perspective, but usually no more than a page or two of short paragraph descriptions or conversations. Easy to read, yes, but also easy to put down and come back to later, which I did often as my mind wandered. This might be my own fault, but my interest wasn't sustained. I did find the villains entertaining. Misspelling of the names of major cities in the US that have slipped by all pre-publishing editing checks irritated me, as did a few cultural and historical references with a seemingly shallow understanding though the character is presented as quite witty and knowledgeable on the subject. But I give the author credit for the idea of the major scam and how it all played out; that was good!
I received an ARC of this book. What follows in an honest review.
This the second of a series. It can be read with no knowledge of the first one as I have done.
What if you were a con man and wanted to pull of the ultimate con. How long would you wait to pull the trigger on it.
That is the premise of Ghost Coach. Can the best con man (Leroy) ever pull off the best con ever, even though it is his daughter (Dani) wanting to do it more. Together, along with the people they bring in, they are the best team to do the job.
I never thought about what would go into a con like this. All of the details that have to be done so that they can hook the person. Yet this team made all the work look easy. Even though at almost every step, something got in their way. There are many twists and turns in the story. There are sad moments and happy moments as well as ones that make you wonder if these con men (and woman) are really the good guys.
I would recommend this book to any who like a light hearted story about how people really want to swindle themselves.
I received a free copy of Ghost Coach in exchange for posting an honest review.
Ghost Coach has nothing to do with ghosts and after just a few pages, readers will understand and find the title a perfect fit. Duane Lindsey created a story with a truly unique plot. The cunning, well planned, intertwining cons will keep you guessing 'til the final page. Dani aka Dixie has a love-hate relationship with Leroy, her father. From an early age Leroy, con man extraordinaire, taught her everything there was to know about the art of the con. Peeks into the past explain the present as Dani, Leroy and their loyal team of con artists/grifters deal with conniving, dangerous opponents in order to accomplish a con in the making for decades. There's a gamut of off-the-wall characters which, when added to the amusing dialog and clever phrasing (ie: Second First Bank on Third Street), makes for one enjoyable read.
I would like to start by saying I'd really rate this book 4-1/2 stars but that's not an option, although it was wonderful, just didn't quite hit the 5 star mark for me. This is the second book in the series, but holds its own as a standalone. Well developed story and characters will capture and keep your attention throughout. A certain page turner of a story with told with humor and thoughtfulness, twists and turns to keep you guessing and really marvel at the craftiness and intelligence of the con-men in the book and truly make you question who the bad guys really are. The reason I took off 1/2 a star is there were some editing issues (misspellings and grammar) that detracted from the story, but didn't detract so much as to make this unreadable. Get this BOOK, this series and read in any order. You certainly won't be sorry!
I received this book for free in return for an honest review. This was the second book in the Dani Silver collection and it was a very entertaining story. The characters were so well done and felt real. Of course you wanted the con artists to win, but they were very likeable. You actually wanted the "marks" to be conned and lose a lot of money. And there were so many twists and turns that I had to keep reading just to see if they were successful in their con. I wondered why they did not seem to be concerned that they needed to keep a low profile and not be seen. All in all this was an enjoyable book and I would recommend it.
"people who crave more than they deserve ... make the easiest marks." The urban legend of the ghost coach, a 1930's automobile, bought by a millionaire, parked, then forgotten. Dixi Rose Logan, con artist and bored, decided to gather a team and exploit the legend - one that her father, Leroy Logan, had set in motion decades before. It all seemed so perfect, until it went wrong. A fun and very visual book with interesting characters. A crime caper, along the lines of Ocean's Eleven, and just like that one, would make a good film.
I wasn’t sure what to expect based on the prologue, but this book turned out to be a fun read. While initially it starts out as a long-con based around an old car, it rapidly evolves in to a Gordian knot of cons. In fact, it isn’t until the final pages that the reader truly learns who conned who and how. This was my introduction to Duane Lindsey’s writing and if this in an indication of his other stories I will certainly be looking to read more. I received a free copy through an author promotion and chose to provide this review.
An entertaining and frankly quite fascinating look at the life of a grifter and how she deals a long con. Just when you think you've got it there's another twist to the story and that serves to keep you reading. The characters are engaging, each with their own good and bad side. The ending was perfect. Overall it's very reminiscent of "Oceans 11" and I really enjoyed reading it. You don't need to read book 1 first (I didn't, though I will) as there is plenty of back story for Dixie and her dad. *I voluntarily read and reviewed this book, my opinions are my own*
This was fairly entertaining, though it reads like a fan fiction piece somehow. The grammar and punctuation would benefit from a good proofreading, and this is very clearly a man writing a female character (so many cracks about Dani’s body, and no woman has ever once described herself and what she was wearing in so much excruciating detail). The plot was well thought out, but would’ve been easier to follow with a bit of tightening up. Overall, still enjoyable and kept my attention. Not a professionally produced book, but still fun to read.
I found this book to be greatly entertaining. I was hooked form the beginning as I laughed through most of the story. I thought Dani and her "crew" were a hoot. I never quite know what was going to happen next as the book was about con artists pulling off a great con in the history of cons. Dani and her dad were especially funny. Was surprised with how it ended considering how the story started, but that was part of the fun.
I liked this book for the most part. It did feel a bit disjointed at times as it had lots of flashbacks to various scams pulled by Logan, the world's longest running con man without a major conviction against him. Or, the many memories from his daughter about herself and the two other women in his life. Remember, this is The Grifter's Daughter series. The cons they, along with their world class grifter friends, pull throughout the book are always fascinating when you see them unfold.
Dixie (or whatever she's calling herself at the time) and her crew seem to lurch from one disaster like picking marks who are stony broke onto one who is a little psycho then another one who is too clever and gets her dad caught by the FBI and put into prison but they still seem to come up smelling of roses and raking in millions. It's a complicated read but worth persevering.
It’s great to read the second book in a series and not be let down. This was just as good as The Grifter’s Daughter, if not better.
I love the author’s writing style - there’s some brilliantly descriptive text - and the characters are beautifully crafted. Definitely a book to leave you with a satisfied smile on your face.
A briskly paced and often hilarious addition to the Grifter’s Daughter series, this book has it all. Dixie, also known by at least a dozen other names, is funny in a self-deprecating kind of way and she has a strong sense of ethics, just not the sort of ethics usually thought of by most people. I am hooked.
All the super cons are back along with Pops Leroy Logan in a zany con spree. The original scam multiplies out of control. The take becomes multi-millions and even innocent people are threatened with financial ruin. Read it to find out who wins, who loses, who comes out ahead and by how much. And as always get ready to laugh out loud often.
I have just discovered this author & this is the second book I've read. Love, Love, Love not being able to figure out the cons until they are revealed. One of my new favourite authors. I'm working my way through all of their books with anticipation.
What a fun read! I enjoyed everything about this story, the characters, the humor and the sting! Read this book and fall in love in what you think are the bad guys! Surprise after surprise in this story.
What a great story lots of twists and turns. Great characters and descriptions. Kept my guessing till the end. I received this book free from the author and this is my honest review
This story tells the story of an elaborate con to sell a vintage car recently discovered after being forgotten for nearly a century. Plans are made but then all goes wrong.
The story got so much deeper than I thought capable. The characters are still relatable, the story leaves you on edge and the author has done a superb job on the plot! Damn, guess I’m buying the next book too.
You have to love a good con, both the person and the scam, and this book has both. Dani (Dixie), her crew and her infamous dad, Leroy Logan, are great characters. The scams they pull are amazing. I couldn't put this down. Even better than the first.
I got this book for free and wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was enjoyable. The female protagonist and her father are engaging characters. I'll likely read other books in this series.
This the second one I've read. The depth and complexity of the plotting is excellent. "It twists and turns like a twisty turny thing." I really don't want to meet Duane Lindsay, I'm sure I'd get scammed!
