Hi, I'm Liz Fielding, and I'm a best selling contemporary romance author with more than 15 million books in print and Katie Fforde wrote, when honouring me with the Romantic Novelists' Association's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2019 said - "Liz Fielding's books, with their warmth, humour and emotion, have charmed millions of readers. She is a true star of the romantic fiction genre..."

And now I've turned to a life of crime with my first cozy mystery. Murder Among the Roses, published on 18 April 2023 - of which Katie Fforde also said, "I was gripped from beginning to end..."

Reading is a big part of my life. I love witty, contemporary romances, not too much sex,, Women's fiction by the likes of Fiona Harper, Julie Cohen, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jennifer Crusie and Barbara O'Neal. And I love crime fiction that isn't too gory, or focussed on clue hunting, but is big on character.

My best loved series at the moment are the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths, The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch and the Libby Sarjeant Mysteries by Lesley Cookman. I've just read the first in the Georgina Drake crime series from Kate Hardy and looking forward to the next.

I loved this! It was a charming story.

Unlike Harlequin Presents, this is more about the romance--without the sex. But I loved the story, the setting, and the ending was swoony and satisfying, and I even teared up a little bit.

Lovely!

Liz Fielding is one of those romance writers whose “closed-bedroom-door” conceit I forgive. Not to belabor the point, but you know my opinion of the closed-bedroom-door romance and its many shortcomings. Fielding, on the other hand, writes the kind of truth-telling, gently-humoured characters I adore. Her prose is fine, elegant and smooth, deceptively simple and subtly rich. Even flawed, it’s easy for me to enjoy her romances, as I did Her Pregnancy Bombshell.

The bombshell in question opens the novel as heroine Miranda “Andie” Marlowe makes her way to the Mediterranean island of L’Isola dei Fiori and her sister’s dilapidated, recently-inherited Villa Rosa. As she tells the customs officer, ” ‘I’m running away.” An intriguing opening and one that drew me in. Andie is escaping a confrontation with her one-night-lover and boss, Cleve Finch, CEO of Goldfinch Air Services, for which Andie flies charters. Andie, we learn, is pregnant, the result of Cleve and her one night of shared passion three weeks ago. For the past year, culminating in that night, Cleve grieved the loss of his wife, Rachel. His devastation is evident in every gaunt line of his face, every pound lost from his formerly-stalwart frame, the absence of his smiles, the sadness in his eyes. Andie, with whom Cleve has shared an affectionate friendship since pre-Rachel, has loved with him since the day she walked into his life as an eighteen-year-old pilot.

Fielding’s opening is marvelous. It’s atmospheric in its descriptions of sun and sand, flora and fauna. Andie is likeable, ruefully funny, honest, and very much aware the man she loves, whose child she carries, is too grief-stricken to go beyond the comfort of a soft touch. Cleve doesn’t see her. Until he does. Because Cleve shows up at the villa to convince her to marry him. Fielding has a great talent of being able to write a hero who is honorable and yet, not stiff, smarmy, or old-fashioned. And, it turns out, Cleve and Andie’s relationship all those years ago, when they first met, pre-Rachel, was of two people falling in love. Why they didn’t stay together is revealed in the novel’s second half.

I’d like to start by talking about why I’ve always liked Fielding’s work. Quoting the following passage will illustrate:

He was saying all the right things, everything expected of a decent man, everything she’d known he’d say, and she wanted to believe him with all her heart. But her heart knew that being ‘okay’ with Cleve Finch was never going to be enough. Knowing that she would never light up his life …

‘Whatever happens I want you to know that I’ll be there with you every step of the way.’

‘Even in the delivery room?’ The words were out before her brain was engaged.

‘I planted the seed, Miranda. I’ll be there for the harvest.’

Fielding’s protagonists are decent, honorable, and true to themselves. Miranda doesn’t want to be the woman, family, and relationship who is just “okay” in Cleve’s life. It isn’t enough for him and it isn’t enough for her. At the same time, she acknowledges what she perceives are Cleve’s personal ideals. Whether it’s honour, or “doing the right thing,” Andie doesn’t want to be someone’s “situational ethic.” But she doesn’t take anything away from Cleve’s thoughtfulness and virtue. Fielding writes romance that may be summed up as “people behaving well.” But what I really like? Her characters, when she doesn’t slide into sentimentality, or angst, express an appealing sense of humour. There’s Clive’s commitment to Andie and their child and then there’s the witty garden metaphor to delight the reader. (Some day, I’d like to write a post on Fielding’s use of garden imagery and symbolism.)

Sadly, while the lovely prose remains throughout, the second half of the novel lapses into romance clichés. Why must the first wife turn out to be so flawed? The first marriage so unappealing? Why can’t a person love two people when one has died? Why must the female figures be split between good and bad girls? With apologies for the spoiler-ish critique, I wanted as much from the second half of Her Pregnancy Bombshell as the first promised. Fielding’s romance is worth reading, but it could’ve been more. With Miss Austen as my reading guide, I’d say that Her Pregnancy Bombshell is “almost pretty,” Northanger Abbey.

Liz Fielding’s Her Pregnancy Bombshell is published by Harlequin Books. It was released on June 6th, 2017, and may be procured from your preferred vendor. Miss Bates received an e-ARC from Harlequin Books, via Netgalley.

Liz Fielding is one of my favorite romance writers but I was disappointed with this one. First let me say that the writing is great and there is humor which I love in my romances. Both protagonists are also likable characters. The problem that I have is with both heroine & Hero. Miranda fell in love with Cleve when she was 18 and they shared a kiss but he ends up marrying someone else. She goes to work for Cleve anyway. When story opens, Cleve is a widower - having lost his wife tragically a year earlier and is still mourning her. It is in one of these deep moments of grief when Miranda tries to "help" him by kissing & making love with him. (Huh? The guy is in grief and he has not made any moves on her but she takes advantage of him?). That was a turnoff right away. The other is that I absolutely hate when my fictional romance books insert other loves. For me it takes away from the romance & story of H/h. No matter how the writer tries to spin it, it always comes across as the heroine (or Hero) settling for 2nd choice. Kind of like a rebound. It is not necessary in my opinion. I would have enjoyed this book so much if Cleve had not loved & married someone else - no matter the reason given. It just ruined it for me but that's my own personal preferences. Others will most likely love it.

I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review via Netgalley.

I must admit that while I liked this book, the first part where Miranda and Cleve's lives collide made me a little uncomfortable. This is because Cleve is mourning his wife, who died in a plane crash.

Miranda is an employee and friend of Cleve, so the fact that they come together after an emotional crisis was difficult to read. However, once the story continued facts were revealed which made this scene much more understandable.

This is a friends to lovers story, and once they were at the Villa Rosa, the reader was given the opportunity to get to know them better as they did. Cleve's immediate intention to care for both Miranda and their baby was also nice to read.

I did get a bit confused about whether the neighbour might be a love interest at first, and the house in a dilapidated state did not present as particularly romantic at first but by the end you are caught up in the joy of the story and the warmth of Miranda's family in particular.

I shall be reading the next story in the series.

This was a nice, easy, fun read that was completely entertaining. I really enjoyed these characters. Cleve and Miranda were so cute together and their story is great. Cleve might be Miranda's boss but she's had a crush on him for the longest time. A year after he loses his wife in a plane crash he's still troubled and when he turns to Miranda for comfort she's more than happy to provide it. That was more than a month ago. Now Miranda finds herself still alone and pregnant. Needing to get away she visits her sister's Mediterranean villa. So maybe it has a few problems, like a hole in the roof and a layer of dirt and dust about 2 inches deep. Miranda can handle that. What she can't handle is Cleve turning up on her doorstep or the gigantic spider in her shower! The spider Cleve will get rid of but getting rid of Cleve isn't quite so easy, and does she really want to??

I highly recommend this one.

MS Fielding has one of those magical romance voices that will just make you smile throughout the story, her stories are just so romantic and moving and this one is no different. The setting is just gorgeous Italy, the hero and heroine just really need to be together and the other characters add so much to this sensual and beautiful story get yourself set for a fabulous journey.

Miranda Marlowe is a pilot she loves her job and is just such a caring person and she has been in love with her boss for many years but he was married and running the company but he has lost his wife in tragic circumstances and when he really needs support Miranda is there and one very moving night leaves consequences. Miranda is sick she can’t fly her plane and she needs to get away for some serious thinking and what better place to go to than Villa Rosa a place she loves there are lots of memories from her childhood with her sisters. There will be new memories made here.

Cleve Finch is a handsome man some would say a playboy in his younger days and meeting the beautiful Miranda when he was younger has stayed with him always and when she got her pilots licence he gives her a job but by this time he is married but they are good friends. Life throws some tough balls at times and Cleve is struggling a little until Miranda steps in. When he goes after her and arrives at the Villa and rescues her from a spider well his life is about to get a lot better. Miranda is so good for him in more ways than one the sensual pull could spark a fire and the way she helps him open up well it made me smile.

This really is a story not to be missed Cleve is just the most gorgeous hero and Miranda caring and loving so a marriage of convenience for the sake of the baby turns into the love match that always should have been. Thank you MS Fielding for another fabulous story a keeper for sure. Oh and I do look forward to the other stories in this series.

Miss Bates Reads Romance recommended this one. I'm not usually a category romance reader, but this one was a pleasant diversion, with a airplane-flying heroine who's been in love with her boss for a long time, and, after one night of grief-induced passion (his wife died a year ago), finds herself pregnant. She runs away to an Italian island to try and figure out what she should do, but he suspects her secret and follows her. Will the marriage he proposes be one of convenience, for the sake of the baby? Or will it blossom into more?

No TSTL characters here, and real, adult emotions make for a strong category read.

What a fun start to a new group of books! Her Pregnancy Bombshell is the first story in the Summer at Villa Rosa and is about Miranda Marlowe and Cleve Finch. Their story is about the Miranda getting pregnant after a night spent with Cleve, baggage from both their pasts in between, and what happens before, during and after. Miranda flies to Villa Rosa, a villa one of her sisters inherited, and that is where their HEA plays out. I liked these two – both have pre-conceived notions about the other, their own lives and each other – and while they are working out the issues between them, the story takes off. Characters surrounding them, and the villa itself, give it some light and witty moments, especially when you have “helpful” or “nosy” neighbors to try to offer advice and friendship. And don’t get me started on Miranda’s Dad and how “helpful” he was… I’m thinkin’ Miranda’s sisters will be coming in the rest of the stories and it should be interesting! I won’t recap the story as Ms. Fielding does a much better job than I ever could but know that you will run the gamut of emotions throughout this story, at least I did.

Her Pregnancy Bombshell by Liz Fielding is a story about trust, hope and the power of love. I was deeply moved by the sincere characters and thought about them even after I closed the book. What really kept me turning the pages though were the deep emotions the author layered into the story. Cleve and Miranda are two people I cared for and if you pick this book up I think you will be touched by their individual journeys too.

Cleve Finch is a wonderful and caring person even though he is a grieving widower. However, his life gets exciting when he becomes intrigued by Miranda Marlowe. He can’t help but acknowledge the slow burning fire Miranda ignites deep in his soul and he can’t shake off her vivacity which makes him want to move on with his life—at last?

Meanwhile, Miranda is the kind of woman who lights up the room and brings a smile to the faces of the people around her. She is energetic, reliable and has plenty of love to share.

Now with a baby on the way, will Cleve and Miranda get the HEA they each deserve?

Overall, this is a wonderful and touching story. It is fast-paced, engaging and the perfect treat to devour on a hot, lazy day!

I was enjoying this romance with its look at grief and comfort between two pilots.

The heroine has been in love with the hero since she was 18. He married another. The book opens with him in deep grief and the heroine comforting him physically.

She gets pregnant. I like very much what a respected pilot and airplane designer the heroine is. I like the setting of the the crumbling Italian Villa the heroine flees to (and the hero follows) to sort out what do to with her life now.

Then, for me the book goes south. The secondary characters don't work well for me and worse the mystery of why the hero and heroine weren't together misses the details I want and the details I get make me dislike almost everyone in the book.

Well written but it lost me. I was given this book for my honest review. So, there you have it.

I enjoyed this book.
The couple in here were so easy to love and the circumstances were fun and enjoyable.

My only concern from here was the last few events leading to the end of the book. It felt like a lot was happening at one point in time, that I wasn't given much of a leeway to process it. It became a messy ending which I didn't like. All the 'bombshells' and secrets at the end were a bit unnecessary. If it had been disclosed maybe around in the middle of the book - I think we would have a different outcome and a more romantic read.

But either way, this was a good book all in all. :)

Her Pregnancy Bombshell (Summer at Villa Rosa #1) by Liz Fielding
Miranda Marlowe had wanted to be a pilot from little on. She achieved her dream but for now she had to put it on hold. She was pregnant!
Cleve Finch was a longtime friend and she had a teenage crush on him. Now as an adult she worked for him. He hired her as soon as she got her pilots license.
Cleve had been married and had lost his wife in a freak plane crash and her unborn baby. But Cleve has deep secrets that Miranda did not know about.
Miranda was there one night when Cleve had a total melt down and they ended up in bed together and she left the next morning leaving him a note behind on her pillow.
Miranda had discovered she was pregnant and had put her flying on hold, she turned in her notice and left while Cleve was not in the office. She took off to Villa Rosa which her sister had recently inherited.
The Mediterranean Villa needed help. So, one of the first things she needed was sleep and then to clean. She knew she needed lights, water and such.
Cleve turned up at the Villa, he proposed but she also told him that she was pregnant with his baby.
Liz Fielding does a superb job in writing, the main characters are so wonderful and likable, and the story is so neat. I laughed, I cried, and I felt like I was right there with Miranda and Cleve.

When pilot Miranda "Andi" Marlowe realizes that the night of comfort she had with her boss, Cleve Finch, led to a baby, she runs to a Mediterranean villa recently inherited by her younger sister. Cleve lost his wife - also a pilot - to a plane accident a year ago. She figures she can decide what to do away from Cleve - and then he shows up.

This is a wonderful beach read that highlights a couple of my favorite tropes: friends to lovers and secret baby. Ms. Fielding has written a sweet romance that is easy to read with a memorable cast of characters. Andi and Cleve have a history and it was a joy to read how they work out their issues like adults. The villa itself serves almost like a secondary character. While a lot of time isn't spent with Andi's sister, the glimpses we gets are intriguing and I look forward to reading their stories at the villa. My only complaint is that so much time is spent in developing their past that there isn't time to show their current relationship as it moved firmly into a romantic one. I would have liked to have seen more of that than we did.

If you're looking for a good beach read, this is a good book to start with.

NB: I received a copy of this book from the author. I have chosen to review it.

I'm a big fan of Liz Fielding--she doesn't just set her stories in interesting places, she makes you feel like you're actually there. Of the books I've read by her, this by far is one of my favorite settings--the island, the villa/mansion with its gardens, private beach, and private hot spring. The history of the villa and its glamorous owner is bittersweet, and the setting is also beautiful because the run-down house is superimposed with the heroine’s childish memories of the place.

I really liked the pilot heroine in this book--she was strong, independent, capable, and while she was stubborn sometimes, she wasn't pigheaded.

I also loved the sisters (who have their own stories at Villa Rosa in the other books in this series). They each have different careers, and yet it's obvious they have strong family ties.

The hero wasn't my favorite--he wasn't weak, but he was perhaps a bit more emotional than other heroes I'm used to.

The dialogue is very witty and LOL funny at times. The middle of the book sagged a little for me, but the ending had a nice little surprise that I didn't see coming.

Overall, a very enjoyable book by one of my favorite authors.

Who are Andie Marlowe and Cleve Finch? Who is Imogen? What type of background to Andie and Imogen come from? What do they each do now? What happened in the last year and a half for Cleve? What have things been like for him? When Andie takes Cleve to pick up his new equipment for his business, what happens? When Andie gets sick and takes off, what does Lucy say and/or do? WHen Cleve returns from a business trip out of the country, what does he find on his desk? What phone calls does he make and where does that take him? This is a true second-chance story in many ways. A definite romance to sink your eyes into. Read and see what I mean.

I loved this book right from the Blurb, and pre-ordered this.

Miranda, a woman pilot learns she is pregnant and heads to her sisters villa, I think everyone can relate with hating spiders and wanting to splash in the beach.

Then Cleve turns up, despite grieving for his wife, and proposes to Miranda, I loved seeing them develop and learning more and more about each other and getting a feel for their back story.

It's a classic mills and boon with a few twists thrown it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would read again. My only downside is my kindle has some weird formatting thing going on so I can't read the epilogue, hopefully I'm not missing out on too much tho.

Firstly I am struck by the beautiful cover. I am so pleased to say i think the story inside was just as beautiful. With Liz Fielding I have come to know I will read a story rich with emotional, written with such descriptive words I'm right there and characters that you worm to instantly.

Her Pregnancy Bombshell is a wonderful read with the characters, Miranda and Cleve are likeable and I love that Miranda flies planes. The plot is written with an imagination I only wish I could have, it is memorable and you're left with that lovely warm feeling you get after drinking a red wine on a cold winter night.

Book 1 in the Villa Rosa Miniseries, well enjoyed and highly recommended for those who love a darn good yarn.

"3 out of 5 stars! Since the moment they met on her 18th Birthday, Andie (Miranda) has known Cleve was the man for her but people and circumstances in life has kept them apart. After six years, and about a year after his wife had passed, Andie and Cleve spend an intense night together that leaves Andie pregnant. Will Cleve be able to convince Andie that he has always loved her no matter what ... before it's too late.

This is one sweet romance that reels you in with its compelling characters and their silly blunders. I enjoyed..."

I thought this book was very cute. I enjoyed the witty banter between Cleve and Andie, they are such a great team, I was totally rooting for them to get together. After Cleve gets over the death of his wife of course, but just because things don't necessarily happen the exact way you want (like every other fairy tale) it doesn't mean things won't happen.

I wouldn't have thought that a villa in disrepair and remote would be such a romantic setting but honestly you never know.... seems like magic is in the air. As much as I enjoyed the book, I found the ending to be a tad rushed and out of hand, honestly I preferred Andie and Cleve's original plans better than what the family planned.

I enjoyed Her Pregnancy Bombshell by Liz Fielding. The story starts out with Cleve Finch being lost in grief over losing his wife and Miranda Marlowe comforting him. The comforting led to consequences and the story is off! Even though the hero is grieving, this is not a sad or depressing story at all. The heroine is plucky and witty, and the story has plenty of humour and romance. I especially enjoyed the setting and the fact that both characters were pilots, it brought an interesting facet to the already well thought out story.

I definitely recommend this book to any romance lover.

Cleve and Miranda have an unusual relationship. YOU see Cleve is grieving for his wife.and Miranda has been in love with him since. she was18 years old and he never knew, but Miranda is in a position where she can comfort Cleve.
Will he see how much she cared about him
Will he let her get close to him.

Typical sweet romance.

This is a typical Mills and Boon romance. It started a little strangely for me, due to Cleves behaviour. When the truth behind his reaction to his wife's death, it was even stranger. I loved how they sorted everything out and had their HEA. The Epilogue was difficult to read due to all the symbols('€`^¥€~') I had to fly through it correcting the mistakes as best I could.
I'd suggest the corrections are made before anyone else spends no eye on this book .

Ms. Felding had a giveaway and I won a copy of this book. It was certainly my lucky day. Her book will hold your interest from the first page to the last. It was one of those books that was so hard to put down.

Miranda and Cleve had been friends for a long time. I am afraid to tell to much as I don't want to give the best parts away but you will go through a variety of emotions with the characters and will feel like you are right there with them.

When Miranda Marlowe offered comfort to her boss during an emotional moment the possible consequences were not on her mind, but when she finds herself pregnant things change and the outcome is nothing she might have expected.

A fun, sweet, secret baby romance with a few twists and turns thrown in to keep you guessing. Her Pregnancy Bombshell was a fast paced read that leaves you with that HEA feeling.
