Tito and his bird, Fia, seek refuge in the coastal town of Allora. Desperate for a meal, Tito sneaks into the kitchen of a widowed coffin maker and is caught helping himself to a bowl of porridge. From this chance encounter, a friendship blooms, a friendship that will be tested as winter blankets the village in snow and danger – in the form of a dark figure determined to find Tito – draws nearer.
The Boy, the Bird & the Coffin Maker is a dreary tale, replete with a plague epidemic that nearly wipes out an entire village, a man consumed by thoughts of death, and a lonely boy starving in the cold.
A more suitable title would be The Coffin Maker, the Bird & the Boy, for that is the order in which the characters are prevalent. The book opens with significant backstory and exposition on the coffin maker before jumping ahead thirty years. At the end of the second chapter, the book lurches forward again – by one year. The story finally begins in chapter three, focusing once more on the coffin maker, Alberto Cavello, who is arguably the central protagonist.
Magical realism plays a small part in the narrative, particularly where the bird is concerned. Fia is a colorful creature whose feathers are prone to changing color like a mood ring.
When the boy first found her, two months before, she had been black all over. But now sometimes, when the sun shone on her wings or when she ate a particularly tasty treat, her feathers would flash gold or silver or green in the light. Today they were flashing all three. She must have been very happy.
The charm of The Boy, the Bird & the Coffin Maker lies in Woods’ vision of Allora – a town of winding streets with “bright houses” comprised of so many colors “that the artists did not have enough pigments to paint them.” An overweight, tyrannical mayor rules the village and a duo of gossiping sisters spread lies. An abundance of pastry shops offer delectable treats, and when winter arrives, it’s a sight to behold.
Storms built over the sea, and the instant they reached land the rain turned to snow. The gray cobbles that wound up Allora Hill turned white, and the fish jumped even higher to escape the icy sea. The snow fell so steadily that the tombstones at the top of the hill had a white glaze, like a dusting of sugar on one of Enzo’s baked sweets.
Despite its charming portrayal of friendship and family, it’s unlikely The Boy, the Bird & the Coffin Maker will appeal to young readers because of its melancholy undertones and focus on adult problems.

Táto kniha do vrecka zaujme hneď na úvod, krásna obálka je doplnená modrým textom a modrými obrázkami... mne evokujú to more pod Allorou, ktoré je neoddeliteľnou súčasťou tohto možno krátkeho ale hlbokého príbehu o nezvyčajnom priateľstve medzi truhlárom a utekajucim chlapcom.
Je to zamyslenie nad tým, že ak niekoho stratíme, predsa tu po ňom či nej ostáva nezmazateľná stopa. Stopa, ktorá určí či sa v nej stratíme, alebo ju s hrdosťou budeme niesť ďalej... tak ako Alberto a Tito nesú tie svoje.
"Viem, že je ťažké, ak človek stratí milovanú osobu, ale snaž sa nemyslieť na to, že tu ležala. Predstavuj si, aká bola predtým. Spomínaj na jej úsmev a smiech. Neprestaneš za ňou smútiť, no aspoň prídeš na veselšie myšlienky."
Určite nie je ľahké vysvetliť deťom smrť z obáv ako to zvládnu a tu podľa mňa leží najväčšia sila tejto knihy, je návodom, príkladom i príbehom, kde pravda, otvorenosť a dôvera preklenú mosty medzi známym a neznámym. Lebo v každom z nás je kúsok dieťaťa a v každom dieťati je kúsok budúceho dospeláka, ale všetci túžime po tom istom.

Alberto is Allora’s coffin maker, living alone following the plague that swept through the town 30 years ago with the same relentless ferocity that now sees fish fly out of the sea. He notices food disappearing from his kitchen, and soon begins leaving food for the scrap thin boy he nearly caught. When Tito and Alberto finally meet, it is the beginning of an adventure for them both.
A beautifully told, magical tale of finding hope after grief, friendship after loneliness, and escaping the past. With characters bursting with life in a town that begs your mind to explore it's a book that makes the world seem like a better place. I can't wait to get my hands on a proper copy complete with full page illustrations; if Anuska Allepuz’s page edgings and cover are anything to go by, they will be stunning!

This book touched my heart at the very start.
This book it’s like a reminder to me to be brave, to cherish moments with people that we love.
It’s so wonderfully heartwarming, light, calming and really just beautiful. It full of hope and love!

“Don’t be frightened. The dead cannot hurt us; only the living can do that.”
A dark and sad tone for a middle grade book, but also very sweet. It’s one of those stories that slowly shifts to the heartwarming tone, even if it never quite loses the darkness. Beautifully written with equally beautiful and simple illustrations every 20 or so pages. Each page is also framed by small little floral drawings. This book is so atmospheric, and I usually don’t care about that, but I loved it here. I really enjoyed this book.
As the title suggests, there’s a lot of death in this little book. There’s also a lot of life too though. Alberto is a simple, good man who has suffered severely, and yet he persists and stays positive, treating people (both living and dead) with kindness. The boy in this story has suffered similarly, and I might argue more so. I don’t want to say too much more about the story itself because it’s a pretty short one at 190 pages, and I want everyone to experience it as I did, going into it knowing very little. I had low expectations, but I think even if they were high, I would still have loved this book. There were quite a few times when I got the sad/happy chills, if you know what I mean by that, or even felt myself tearing up a bit. I was emotionally invested. I loved a few characters so much that I didn’t stop reading until I’d finished the book, and I also hated a few characters passionately. I definitely did not expect to find such a little gem of a book on accident. I’ve been searching for comfort reads lately and this was just what I needed.

Náramne poetická, príjemná kniha o ťažkých veciach. V istom ohľade klasický príbeh o dobre a zle, strate a nádeji, smrti a živote, s ozvláštňujúcimi, ale nie rušivými motívmi ako lietajúce ryby, čarovný ostrov či pestrofarebný vták. Rohodne veľkým pozitívom knihy je, že som autorke jej príbehový mikrosvet okamžite bez výhrad uverila. A to sa v takých útlych príbehoch nevidí úplne často. Krásne, nežné ilustrácie čaro už len dotvárajú. Vydarená knižka.

„Neboj sa. Mŕtvi nám nemôžu ublížiť. To môžeš čakať iba od živých.“
Táto kniha ma zaujala tým, že ju prirovnali k Malému princovi. Po prečítaní musím súdiť, že okrem toho, že kniha obsahuje viaceré krásne ponaučenia s detským pohľadom na svet, je to skvelý príbeh, ktorý má sám o sebe čo ponúknuť.
Ilustrácie, ktoré sa v diele nachádzajú dotvorili jedinečný zážitok, akým toto čítanie bolo. Keď sa do toho človek dostal, stačilo málinko, jedna veta, aby sa mi do očí nahrnuli slzy. Už teraz viem, že sa k tejto knihe vrátim- presne ako k Malému princovi.
Knihou nás sprevádza truhlár Alberto, ktorý po smrti svojej rodiny prestal vyrábať nábytok a zameral sa na truhly pre zosnulých. Jeho vnímanie sveta a okolia bolo zaujímavé a keď sa spojil s Titovým, ich kontrast bol viac ako pozoruhodný. Obaja toho ponúkali veľa a síce bol truhlár o niekoľko desiatok rokov starší, priučil sa čo to od Tita.
Och, Tito. Čo si mi len urobil, chlapče!
Spolu s jeho vtáčikom Fiou, ktorá ho všade doprevádzala, mi obaja prirástli k srdcu. Neraz mi bolo do plaču nad osudom, ktorý ho postihol. To, čo, sa na začiatku javilo ako nevinná krátka jednohubka sa nakoniec zmenilo na niečo, čo vo mne bude ešte dlho rezonovať.
Chlapec, vtáčik a truhlár je takým moderným spracovaním toho najlepšieho a zároveň aj strašidelného, čo v rozprávkach býva. Skrýva v sebe žiaľ, vyrovnávanie sa so smútkom pri strate blízkeho, ale zároveň tam môžeme nájsť aj lásku, nádej a hlavne silné puto, ktoré sa vytvorilo medzi Albertom a Titom.
Celový obraz dotvárajú postavy, ktoré si, ako inak, prisvojili niektoré črty typické pre každú dedinu. Nájdete tu namysleného a rozmarného starostu, taktiež sestry klebetnice, ktoré sú ako živá verzia gossip girl a nič im neunikne, no taktiež sa tu nájde aj sused Enzo, ktorého čerstvý chlieb som nielenže skoro cez stránky cítila, ale jeho čisté srdce, s ktorým pomáhal Albertovi ma dostalo.
Keby som mala tohto roku vypichnúť jednu detskú knihu, ktorá je pre všetkých a ktorú by ste si mali prečítať, bola by to táto.

Knihu odporúčam : milovníkom krásnych príbehov a ilustrácií v knihách
Knihu neodporúčam : ak nemáte knihy písané pre deti a ilustrácie v knihách, ak sa vyhýbate príbehom s morálnym odkazom
Aj napriek tomu, že kniha sa považuje za detskú, myslím že táto knižka je pre každého, kto si chce prečítať niečo s krásnou myšlienkou. Prirovnala by som ju k Malému princovi. Nie príbehom, ale tým že má možnosť osloviť všetky vekové kategórie. A ja by som knižke priala rovnakú pozornosť, pretože príbeh je nádherný.
Ten nezačína rovno šťastne. V malom mestečku Allora, kde domy žiaria ako drahokamy a ryby vylietávajú z mora prepukne mor. Alberto pochová celú svoju rodinu a začne vyrábať truhly aj pre dedinu. Stane sa z neho truhlár a po čase sa z neho napokon stane aj samotár. Jedného dňa však do jeho života príde opustený chlapec a vtáčik a príbeh sa môže začať.
V knihe sa stretávame s rôznymi témami ako : strata, smrť, druhá šanca, láska k blížnemu, pomoc v nudzi, chudoba a bohatstvo, fantázia a naplnenie svojich snov. Veľmi silno je vyobrazená aj skazená ľudská stránka a naopak neskazenosť ľudského srdca.
Odporúčam všetkým, ktorí si chcú prečítať niečo pekné s krásnymi ilustráciami, knižka určite poteší aj ako darček.

They form an unlikely companionship, which gives them the love they have sorely missed. It was heartwarming to see such a friendship blossom.
The language carries the sadness of such a story like a feather on air; you feel the grief and loss, yet it is gentle. There are little details that add a level of uniqueness and whimsy to the writing too.
I will mention that there is one character who is often exploited for comedic effect, solely due to their size.

„Rozhodol sa ostať, lebo ak raz prídete do Allory, stačí, keď zdvihnete hlavu k oblohe, a každý deň od rána až do noci sa vám pred očami odohráva čarovné divadlo.“
Ak vás nepresvedčila ukážka, neviem, čo viac by som dodala. Určite viete, že zážitky, ktoré vo vás zanechali najviac, sa najťažšie opisujú. Nuž a teraz si predstavte, že vás niečo roztrhá srdce na najdrobnejšie kúsky, a potom ho postupne po čiastočkách opäť zlepí len preto, aby ho na konci mohol kompletne roztrieštiť. Chlapec, vtáčik & truhlár je priam až smrteľne krásna knižka o vysporiadaní sa s koncom bytia a so životom ako takým, ktorý je nie vždy podľa našich predstáv.
Stránky z krehučkého papiera pretkané jemnými ilustráciami nádherne dopĺňajú ešte krehkejší príbeh o osamelom truhlárovi, ktorému sa vďaka jednému čarovnému stretnutiu vráti do očí iskra, o chlapcovi, ktorý v jeden deň stratil všetko, ale zároveň našiel sám seba, a o vtáčikovi, ktorý spokojne čviriká, len aby ostatným vyčaril úsmev na perách.
Nič vám nestojí v ceste, aby ste si sami na vlastné oči prezreli nezabudnuteľnú Alloru, zablúdili v jej uzučkých uličkách, nadýchali sa sviežeho morského vzduchu, spoznali najsrdečnejších ľudí na svete, čelili neodvratnému koncu a našli šťastie tam, kde mnohých iných postretol smútok.

Niektoré knihy sú knihy. Iné sú pohladením. Ako táto.
O stratách, o dobrých ľuďoch, o tichej spolupatričnosti, hlasnej nadutosti, o škodlivej klebetnosti, o zázrakoch i pocite stiesnenosti. O strachu a o nových nádejách. O tom všetkom to je.
Mestečko Allora je zvláštne. Nikto tam nechytá ryby, lebo tie tam samy vyskakujú z rozbúreného mora. Farby striech sú nádherné tak, až pre ne maliari musia objavovať nové odtiene. O stratách, o dobrých ľuďoch, o tichej spolupatričnosti, hlasnej nadutosti, o škodlivej klebetnosti, o zázrakoch i pocite stiesnenosti. O strachu a o nových nádejách. O tom všetkom to je.

Chlapec, vtáčik a truhlár je taký skrytý poklad medzi knihami. Už len ten názov mi prišiel zvláštny. Tri pojmy, ktoré spolu až tak často nevidíme, tobôž, ak ide o detskú knihu. Čo ich spája?
Vyrovnanie sa so smrťou. Osamelosť. Nekonečné priateľstvo a láska. Sú prepojené, navzájom spolu súvisia a spolu nám vytvárajú príbeh. Je to príbeh o ľuďoch, ktorí v živote zažili smrť a nepredvídateľnosťou osudu sa ich cesty prepletú a spoja. Táto zmena nenastane hneď, je to skôr náhoda a možno osud, ale je to viditeľné a nádherné.
Mesto (ale aj miesto), ktoré autorka vymyslela je naozaj magické. Predstavte si, že ryby tu lietajú, na obloho vidíte pestrofarebné vtáčiky. Znie to úžasne, občas som mala pocit, že sa tam nachádzam a užívam si jedinečnosť toho miesta. Za to ďakujem autorkinmu jedinečnému štýlu písania, stvorila niečo krásne v jadre niečoho ťaživého, niečoho, čo je nám blízke, ale zároveň máme z toho strach. Smrť blízkych a možno aj tá naša vlastná.

4.5 stars. My son and I enjoyed this, though the story is unconventional in some ways. Alberto is an awesome character - so much to like about him. I would recommend checking content warnings before reading this to a child, depending on your circumstances, but all issues are handled in a gentle manner.

The only regret I have about reading a proof copy instead of a finished version of this book is that ever so often there was a page that said: ‘illustration to come’. If these are just a fraction as wonderful as the writing then The Boy, The Bird and The Coffin Maker is going to be one of the loveliest books I’ve read this year.
The story is magical, it starts with the setting. Not just the flying fish, but how the whole town is described, the residents and the first chapter that tells you the history of the Coffin Maker. Then we have Tito (the boy), a magical bird, danger and another tale beautifully woven within theirs.
I am very much in love with Matilda Woods writing in this book. It was just perfect. Like a warm blanket of words that wraps around you as you walk through Allora. I knew within the first few sentences that this book was going to be brilliant. I think other readers will as well.

This is one of those magical junior fiction stories that immediately places you in a distinct time and setting. Allora is a town famous for its fish that fall from the sky, its colourful streets, unusual birds and fascinating and gossiping residents. The story begins with Alberto, Allora’s coffin maker who having lost his wife and children has lived alone since a plague swept through his town over 30 years ago. He bides his time by making beautiful unique coffins but he is lonely and increasingly grumpy. When he meets a magical bird and the frightened boy Tito, his lonely life acquires new meaning. Although this is a book that deals with death, grief and endings it is a gentle and hopeful tale that reveals new beginnings, new friendships and is beautifully illustrated. The writing is lyrical and evocative of fantasy and fable and sensitive readers who like stories with heart will love this novel.

The real world is too hard and too heavy. That’s why well written middle grade fiction is my reading sweet spot, and sweet this is.
Magical realism that reads almost like a fairy tale, this emotional story about a young boy and his unlikely protector is a treasure.
We need more books about boys like this, that explore complicated emotions and relationships, rather than relying on humor or action. Not all books about boys need to be in the Captain Underpants vein. Boys need permission to feel, to fear, to grieve, to long, and to hope. Books should be the windows that allow them that.

Really enjoyed this story. It seemed to have a flavour of some other story I know. The story of Alberto - the coffin maker, Tito- the boy & Fia -the bird, moves along at quite a pace. It's sweet not saccharine and has a fairytale ending. The supporting characters are sketched well enough to make them feel like people you might know!
I loved the cyan print ( made it very easy to read) and the simple illustrations are a lovely accompaniment.

November 13, 2021Stret so smrťou či vyrovnávanie sa so stratou sú témy, od ktorých sa tých najmenších obvykle snažíme uchrániť – zastierame, zľahčujeme, rozptyľujeme – no hoci s ťažkým srdcom, aj ich raz musíme oboznámiť so skutočnosťou, že umieranie je neoddeliteľnou súčasťou života. Úloha zdanlivo nepríjemná, no verte či nie, aj náročné správy možno podať s ľahkosťou, stačí ten správny príbeh.
Napríklad taký, ktorý v sebe ukrýva čarovná knižka Chlapec, vtáčik a truhlár – na jednej strane smutný, melancholický, na druhej plný nádeje a toľko potrebnej lásky. Starec ubíjaný stratou a samotou, prežívajúci len z nevyhnutnosti a čoraz častejšie pomýšľajúci na smrť. Hladujúci chlapec, ktorý nečakane prišiel o všetko.
Dvaja užialení cudzinci topiaci sa v bubline vlastného utrpenia, náhodné stretnutie, prekrásne vykreslené nepravdepodobné priateľstvo a k tomu štipka magického realizmu. Aj napriek tomu, že kniha sa nikdy celkom nevymaní spod dusivej atmosféry, ktorú so sebou bolesť a smrť prinášajú, Chlapec, vtáčik a truhlár je zároveň akýmsi majákom, svetlom v temnote – príbehom o znovuobjavení šťastia, o budovaní priateľstva aj napriek strate.
Deti (a možno do istej miery i nás, dospelých) učí, že trúchliť je v poriadku, no zároveň dodáva nádej, že všetko raz prebolí.
Napríklad taký, ktorý v sebe ukrýva čarovná knižka Chlapec, vtáčik a truhlár – na jednej strane smutný, melancholický, na druhej plný nádeje a toľko potrebnej lásky. Dej sa odohráva v typickej dedinke, v ktorej žijú naozaj rôzni ľudia, ktorých autorka popísala veľmi reálne. Dedinka je však predsalen trošku neobyčajná, magická a teda nielen reálna, ale aj rozprávková. Hlavné postavy, chlapec, vtáčik a truhlár, sú naozaj sympatické, hneď som si ich obľúbila a celý čas im držala palce, nech to pre nich dobre dopadne. Príbeh ma v sebe aj isté tajomno, čo robí knihu napínavejšou.
Chlapec, vtáčik a truhlár je veľmi pekná knižka, ktorá rozoberá naozaj ťažké témy, ale s citom, jemne a popritom čitateľovi naozaj veľa dá. V príbehu sa stretávame so smrťou, strachom, násilím a stratou, ale aj s nádejou a pochopením. Ukazuje nám ľudí plných hnevu, ktorí sú násilní a správajú sa naozaj zle. No taktiež nám ukazuje dobrákov, ktorí by sa pre druhých rozdali, a tak je to aj kniha o priateľstve, láske a pomoci tým, ktorí to potrebujú.
Táto knižka je milá a pekná, ale aj veľmi smutná. Pri jej čítaní vami budú lomcovať všetky možné emócie. A tento výborne napísaný príbeh dopĺňajú milé ilustrácie a krásna obálka. Chlapec, vtáčik a truhlár je síce rozprávka, ale pokojne by som ju odporučila nielen deťom, ale aj dospelým. Úplne každému. Neoľutujete 💙.

This was cute and charming and I should have loved it, but I didn't. I think it's because it was trying to be too many things at once. It's a story about family, and what family means. It's a story about a village, it's a story within a story about a magical place...it goes a bit Pan's Labyrinth there for awhile.
It was just too much. It's not a bad read, at all, it's just scattered.
Side note (and this does not affect the review at all): I can't stand book titles that are lists. I think The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe has that covered already and anyone who has every watched a patron struggle to remember the name of a book Angus? Thongs? Big Things? So, I'm not a big fan of lists as titles.

This is a beautiful story of family and friendship: Alberto, a coffin-maker, who befriends a young boy, Tito. It's set in an end-of-the-line coastal village where rumours are rife and fish fall from the skies - it's so enchanting and evoked strong resemblances to my favourite Cornish fishing haunts. It's perfect for LKS2 as a class read and Y4 as an independent read. I'm thinking of pairing it with Journey in the future as both books share an evocative magic.

I’m struggling to put this as “read” because I actually listened to this as an audio book (first ever), but whatever, it’s 2020 and I don’t care anymore 😂.
