What do you get if you cross a squid with a fish? It's a squish, of course! And how about a shark and a turtle? Why, that's a shurtle! Children are sure to giggle at the silly names and strange noises in this crazy book with rhyming text and brilliant illustrations from Axel Scheffler. Simply flip the pages to create more than one hundred seriously silly animals that live in the ocean.
Axel was born in Hamburg, Germany. At school he was good at art, but didn’t think of a career in illustration until he won a cuddly purple cow in a drawing competition.
He moved to England in 1982 to learn English and study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art and then set up home in London. Axel illustrated a number of books for various publishers, and in 1993 Kate suggested him as the illustrator for Julia Donaldson’s first picture book text, A Squash and a Squeeze. This was the start of a hugely successful partnership: their bestselling modern classic, The Gruffalo, has sold over three-and-a-half million copies worldwide, and the TV animation was broadcast on Christmas day 2009.
Axel has illustrated a number of other highly successful books, including Muddle Farm, and his books have been translated into 42 languages.
Axel lives in London with his partner and young daughter.
This flip book offers 121 different outcomes for children to create new ocean creatures by taking the top half of a real animal and combining it with the bottom half of another. The images carefully line up when the flip occurs and the new creature is created and are colorful to draw young children in as they happily flip away. Each creature has an eight line rhyming poem that encourages reading about facts in a fun and playful way and when the new animals are created will illicit more giggles as the descriptions get a little crazy. The format encourages repeated use and the text is accessible for new readers reading on their own or for younger children with an adult reader in a lap. I would recommend this book for purchase by any school or public library.

KID APPEAL: MEDIUM
Scheffler has taken 11 ocean creatures and made a clever flap book that allows the reader to mix and match different tops and bottoms. Each remix brings a new “name” for the combined creature and also an 8-line poem. As a parent, I would get quicklt tired of re-reading the new poems, so hopefully the youngsters would want to know the creature names and not want me to read the poem every time.
A wonderful animal book featuring Axel Scheffler's characteristically adorable artwork.
This is a very fun book for learning about different ocean animals. From sea lions to lobsters, each animal has a fun, rhyming description discussing their main characteristics as well as a two-part illustration. Flipping through the book, the reader can learn about real animals as well as mix and match the pages to create their own silly combinations such as an octolphin (octopus and dolphin) or a shellyfish (shark and jellyfish).
Perfect way for children to learn about animals and have a fun experience with reading.
