The wreckage of addiction lies scattered around too many people--from the one who is or was addicted to those in relationship with that person. Age-old culprits of drugs, alcohol, and gambling are joined by newer addictions, such as food, prescription medication, shopping, pornography, and technology. Left unaddressed, addiction devastates lives now and makes it difficult to see a positive way forward.
For anyone struggling with an addiction, attempting to live in recovery, or seeking to understand the mind of an addict they love, Dr. Jantz's newest book is a lifeline. In it he helps readers answer tough questions, such as
- Am I an addict? - Why is the first step so hard? - How can I put my life back together? - Where do I go from here?
Addiction doesn't have to have the last word. Healing the Scars of Addiction offers a holistic approach to healing so that readers can reclaim their lives and move forward in hope.
It is all too easy to get addicted to a multitude of things today, but it can be really difficult to get rid of those same addictions. I am a firm believer in prayer and God's help, but these things are still hard to battle, so it is good to have books out there on issues one struggles with to get some additional help and advice.
I have read and reviewed other books along the lines of this one, but I found this one to do a better job than most. The author seems to really know his "stuff", and approaches it from both a professional and compassionate standpoint.
Among other things, the book addresses how and why addictions can happen, then goes on to the how's of getting rid of an addiction.
I found the book very well written, and containing a lot of helpful material and advice for those battling addictions.
Healing the Scars of Addiction by Gregory L. Jantz and Ann McMurray is a self-help book for those who are dealing with addictions and are wanting to recover. The book goes into depth to explain the many different types of additions that one may have and how it affects them and other people. The author uses the stories of real people to show the pain and suffering those who deal with addictions have as well as how they moved forward with their lives to overcome their addictions. This is an interesting book to read in the fact that I would never have thought of some of the types of addictions the authors describe. The book is very easy to understand with getting down to the basics of helping the reading know that taking the first step is very hard, but is not the only step to take. Overcoming an addiction is a long hard process that changes the person as they grow and heal. I found this book to be a very interesting book to read. I would recommend this book be read over time so the reader can spend time focusing on what is written and how to use it in their life. I received a copy of this book from Revell Publishing, this is my honest review.
I found this book to be very well written. For anyone struggling with an addiction, attempting to live in recovery or for those seeking to understand the mind of an addict they love, this novel is eye opening.
It provided me with understanding, helpful steps/attitudes and realistic hope for my previous struggles and allows me to move forward with a healthier life.
I loved this book. I believe it opened my eyes to how the mind of addicted people work and brings to light things I may never have known/understood before because I haven't walked that path myself. In today's society I dare say that almost everyone knows at least one person that struggles with addiction or addicting behaviors. I believe this book can help not only those who are addicted/on the road to recovery but their friends and family as well. I love how Jantz gives statistics and addresses all types of addiction from the big ones that normally come to mind like drugs, alcohol, pornography, gambling, to some you might not think about like eating disorders, workaholics, addiction to technology, and other addicting behaviors. The book is written more to toward the person struggling with addiction and recovery, but like I said anybody could read this book and learn from it even if it's just to understand the struggles your loved one goes through.
**I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for review. I was not required to write a positive review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Healing the Scars of Addiction: Reclaiming Your Life and Moving into a Healthy Future by Gregory L. Jantz, PhD, is a book about overcoming addiction. It is a good book for those who have struggled with addiction, as well as those who would like to learn more about the struggle of addiction. The book has a nice structure to it, exploring whether someone is addicted, what different types of addiction are, and how they can start putting their life back together. I like how the author discusses the role that secrecy plays in addiction, as well as the role that trust plays in one’s freedom from addiction. One of my favorite parts of the book examines people’s fears, such as their fear of change, fear of relapse, and fear of rejection. Lantz shows that addiction sometimes has deep scars, but that addicts have hope and the promise of a life free from addiction.
In Healing the Scars of Addiction, Dr. Jantz does a fantastic job of giving the reader tools to helping them recognize and seek help in aiding the relief of addiction and ultimately set free from them. It also helps one understand addition and gain knowledge. Overall, I think this book is a helpful read and provides step-by steps for someone who is looking for help. It also provides a Christian perspective, which readers are looking for when it comes to freedom. I give this book 4/5 stars.

I highly recommend to everyone must to read this book.” I received complimentary a copy of this book from Revell Read Blogger for this review”.
Great information presented by a veteran addiction counselor. I will be able to use much of this material in classes at the rehab where I am teaching. One thing I really appreciated is that Jantz, though he refers to himself, is not excessive with using personal pronouns. And his style, while very readable, is not folksy like so many people write today. The only negative: Though he says several times that he is a committed Christian, and presents many Christian principles, he also says people should use their "higher power," whatever that may be.
