Wedding bells become warning bells in New York Times bestselling author B.J. Daniels's latest heart-pounding Cahill Ranch romanceThe heartbreak and dashed hopes were supposed to stop hurting when Deidre "Drey" Hunter left Hawk Cahill in the past and married someone else. But when her husband vanishes on their wedding night, leaving her in an eerie Victorian mansion, the fairy tale becomes a horror story. Only, this is real, and someone wants Drey dead.Hawk knows ranching, not personal protection--until he realizes Drey is at risk. No one can safeguard her...or love her...the way he can. The past is a ghost they can't escape, but with a killer hungry to silence them both, will they get the chance to try?
B.J. Daniels started her life in Houston, Texas, before her family moved to Montana at age five. She grew up in a cabin in the Gallatin Canyon near Big Sky and later on Hebgen Lake near West Yellowstone. Because of her love for Montana, most of her books are set there. Born into a storytelling family, all she'd ever wanted to do was write stories. After a career as an award-winning newspaper journalist, she wrote and sold 37 short stories before she finally wrote her first book, ODD MAN OUT. Since then she has won numerous awards including a career achievement award for romantic suspense. She lives in Montana with her husband, Parker, two Springer Spaniels. When she isn't writing, she quilts, boats and. makes rope/fabric baskets. She always reads, loving to lose herself in a good book.
This intriguing volume in the Cahill series was taut with suspense and included a generous dollop of second chance romance. There were several compelling mysteries to solve and secrets to reveal. The evidence was muddled concerning the incredibly naïve Drey being set-up, gaslighted, or losing her mind, and although I had strong suspicions as to who was behind her tribulations, I couldn’t discern the why. And I loved that. Ms. Daniels has skillfully penned a crazy good mystery as her writing kept me attentive, on-edge, and highly curious. The separate storylines wove in and out until combining seamlessly into a satisfying conclusion. The final installment of this beloved series is in the works and I look forward to seeing how this crafty writer wraps things up.

I've read a lot of B.J. Daniels and loved them. The Montana Cahill's Series started off really good, but just hasn't lived up to its' full potential. This story of Hawk and Drey started out rather strangely and ended with the requisite HEA, but, overall, there was a lot of repetition and several TSTL moments along with a lot of "that just doesn't happen".
Deidre “Drey” and Hawk Cahill were high school sweethearts who went off to college where their grand romance went off the rails. Hawk can't forgive Drey, nor can he move on from what happened. He is literally stuck.
Drey has waited for years for Hawk to forgive her, but he is a stubborn Cahill to the core. When Ethan, a wealthy businessman sweeps into her life, Drey decides she is through waiting for Hawk to come around. She is looking forward to leaving Gilt Edge, Montana behind for the bright lights of New York City. On her wedding day all her expectations come crashing down when Ethan deserts her on their wedding night.
Alone and disoriented in the sprawling, mountain top, modern mansion, Drey begins to doubt her sanity. When Ethan's brother, Jet, suddenly appears she is even more off kilter. Ethan has never told her he has a brother. When Hawk hears Drey screaming in the middle of the night, he breaks in and finds her totally disoriented and in serious need of his help. Now, Hawk had to decide to forgive Drey or stay out of her life for good.
BJ Daniels has done it again! I should have realised what an intriguing, fast paced romantic suspense this would turn out to be - a really enthralling page turner, IMHO. It features Hawk, one of the Cahill brothers, and his first love ‘Drey’ - Deidre Hunter. They were together throughout their teens but split after tragedy and misunderstandings tore them apart. Now she’s getting married to an out of town business man, Ethan, and Hawk is determined not to intervene even though he still loves her. At the wedding reception, Ethan announces that he and his bride will be living in the newly constructed home, Mountain Crest, on the outskirts of Gilt Edge rather than his penthouse apartment in New York which is where Drey had expected to be moving. After that shock and seeing inside her new home for the first time another surprise is in store for Drey as her new husband mysteriously disappears on her wedding night leaving no clue to where he has gone or why. Drey starts to question her own sanity as crazy things start happening in her new fortress home situated right next to where Hawk lives. Hawk can’t resist coming to her rescue and he believes her. Just what is happening to her - and why? Where has her new husband disappeared to? Can she trust his brother, Jet, who just turns up out of the blue? There are definitely more questions than answers in this story and it is a real page turner as you seek to uncover the answers.
Interwoven into this is a second thread involving Billie Dee who is searching for the daughter she was forced to give up as a baby. There are hints, clues and discoveries to be made as the story progresses. I found it an intriguing read with great characters, unexpected humorous moments and very dramatic scenarios. It is a great read and works well as a standalone. I’ve only read one other book in this series so far but definitely intend catching up on the others when my tbr pile is lower. I’m very impressed with how the author manages to keep the reader on tenterhooks in this suspense filled story and I’ll definitely be looking out for more books by them in future.
I requested and was given a copy of this book, via NetGalley. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.

Reading this book is like being dropped into the middle of a really long, boring conversation with three people you haven't seen in ten years; and you really didn't like them ten years ago. You have no idea who or what they're talking about but they keep repeating information over and over again, louder and with hand waving, thinking that might help you understand. Characters just start having drama and there's no set up; no introduction. The two love interests have a history, but it's not described. As a reader I have no idea why I should be rooting for Hawk and Drey to get together. Also, so much is repeated. Over and over again. Repeated.
To help demonstrate how repetitive this book is, here are some numbers: - The word 'premonition' is mentioned 16 times. - It was mentioned four times that the marriage wasn't consummated. All by the same irrational character. - You will internally scream 20 times, "Get out of the house!"
Story: 1 star Character Development: 1 star Writing/Prose: 1 star
Negative stars, if I could (and the *only* reason I finished it was that it was for book club). I have so many complaints about this book. I feel like there were fundamental misunderstandings about so many things (mental health! geography! cooking! adults with any sense of agency! technology! small towns! how federal investigations work!). Additionally, there was a lot of repetition, it didn't pick up until about 70% into it, I didn't care about any of the characters, and what was with that adoption storyline? It had nothing to do with the main story, and it didn't connect at the end other than that everyone went to a picnic. 🤷♀️
I was not expecting this book to be honest. I thought it was going to be a sweet cowboy romance and it was not at all what I thought it would be but I'm gonna be real with you, I don't remember reading the blurb because it is pretty telling... anyway this book was refreshing. It was a romantic suspense with more suspense than romance but still enough to keep me satisfied. I don't read anything without a little romance in it.
Some of the events in the book kinda of creeped me out and honestly I had no idea what was really happening. I kept plotting but never managed to hit the nail on the head, which is surprising cause I've gotten pretty good at figuring stuff out in books. Or maybe some are just too predictable but this one wasn't at all, not to me at least. I honestly had no clue what was going on most of the time. And I really enjoyed not knowing until the very end, it kept me glued to the story waiting to find out clues and trying to figure it out myself. It was interesting and entertaining.
When it comes to the romance, it's a second chance that kind of leaves you wanting more... I wish there was a bit more of the romance plot where things were better explained, maybe POVs in the past, that would have been cool. It was missing that real angst I love in a second chance romance honestly.
One thing I also enjoyed was the side character's plot line, that story was sweet. Overall I enjoyed the book but it honestly wasn't one of those books being part of a series even if it is a standalone, that had me jumping to read the rest of the series. Which is what usually happens. I'll just keep it at this one and be happy with it.

Turning, she saw a crow staring at her from the balcony with its beady little dark eyes. The bird flapped its silken ebony wings at her and hopped to the chair closest to the open door. Wasn’t there some superstition about crows and death?
Rancher’s Dream by B.J. Daniels is a brilliantly concocted masterpiece of western romantic suspense. It is the sixth installment in the author’s Montana Cahills series. However, this tale works very well as a standalone read if that is your preference. As with the other Montana Cahill books, this installment is about one of the Cahill siblings. The focus this time around is on Hawk Cahill and his long-time love, Deidre Hunter. The ominous mood is set from the beginning.
As the story opens, Dierdre “Drey” Hunter Baxter has given up on ever reconciling with her true love, Hawk Cahill, and married Ethan, a handsome, mega-rich businessman, after a whirlwind courtship. She was surprised at their wedding reception by her husband’s announcement that they would not be living in his penthouse apartment in New York City miles away from Hawk as she’d expected. Instead, her husband plans to have them reside in Mountain Crest, or as the locals call it, Baxter's Folly – an ultra-modern, high-tech glass monstrosity built into a mountain overlooking Gilt Edge. That’s only one of many revelations to come as her new husband disappears without a trace on their wedding night whilst a stranger shows up the next morning claiming to be her husband’s brother. Meanwhile, in a second interwoven thread, Billie Dee’s quest to find the biological daughter she had given up for adoption progresses.
Rancher’s Dream is a second chance at love story with just the right amount of sexual tension. That said, the suspense takes center stage for most of the tale with premonitions and seriously bad vibes adding to the ever-present danger in the unfolding story line. Drey and Hawk share a long history together but a tragedy and mistrust drove them apart. Then, they were both too stubborn to bridge the gap between them.
Even so, when Drey, now married to another man, believes she’s losing her mind and starts having hallucinations and periods which she can’t remember, it’s her ex-boyfriend, Hawk, who she turns to in her distress. I loved how Hawk couldn’t help himself as he was all there for her despite his own misgivings and the wall between them. The characters are believable and Drey’s distress is tangible as she is frightened out of her mind. Fans of the series will enjoy the updates on previous favorite characters which are interspersed throughout.
Following please find a few of my favorite lines from Rancher’s Dream:
You will die in this house. --- You’ve made a terrible mistake. --- Here she was on her wedding night and nothing about it was as she’d once dreamed. Dierdre “Drey” Hunter Baxter. Married to the wrong man. --- Everything was going to be all right, she told herself. Every woman got wedding jitters, right? Every woman felt a little nauseated at the thought of her first love on her wedding day. Every woman saw herself lying face down, dead in a pond. --- What man didn’t join his wife on their wedding night?
B.J. Daniels is an awesome storyteller. Rancher’s Dream is a page-turning thriller that you won’t want to put down. Just when you can’t breathe from the building suspense, she provides a bit of relief with a short respite via Billy Dee’s story. This book kept me up way past my bedtime as sleep was impossible until I’d followed the mystery to its shocking conclusion. Teeming with twists and turns, I was kept guessing until the end. Now, I can’t wait for Cyrus Cahill’s story coming in November!
I really enjoyed this book. It started out very different than I expected. This is my first B.J. Daniels book. I was hooked from the first page. I loved the twists and the unexpected things that happened in this book. It was almost like a mystery book with some romance. And that romance was a second chance romance which I just love! Hawk is my dream guy. He was so sweet and I loved that no matter what anyone said he loved Drey and knew who she was. He never doubted her. I loved how simple Drey was. She was pretty much taken advantage of by Ethan. I didn´t like him. I always had a bad feeling there was something he was up to. And then enter Jet, Ethan´s brother who Drey never even knew existed. That is some shady stuff. The author told this story so well. I was intrigued and was dying to know what the hell was going on. I couldn´t read fast enough. I was very happy with the ending and the whole book altogether. I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes a mystery with some romance.
I love the Cahill! Hawk and Drey's story was just plain amazing. After a bad misunderstanding when they were younger Hawk and Drey break up and go their separate ways. Drey tries to move on and marries another man knowing that she is still in love with Hawk. There is enough mystery and danger in this story you will be on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding till the very end.
An enjoyable book but at times quite obvious in where it was going. Though it is new, I kept getting the occasional impression I had read it before. Difficult to not have that happen when you write prolifically.
I've been following the Montana Cahills series for some time and given it mixed reviews, and I'm afraid that will hold true for this sixth title in the series as well, since it felt far more like a traditional gothic novel than a contemporary novel of romantic suspense, and I'm giving it 3-stars.
To begin with, what rancher and which dream? I imagine that the title refers to Hawk Cahill's dream of a happy life with the woman he loved and lost, but although he's mentioned quite often, he really isn't a major player until nearly the end of this novel, and I kept wishing the author had used alternating narration so that we knew more about him and what he was thinking and feeling.
As the novel opens, Drey (Dierdre) is en route to the home of her new husband, billionaire businessman, Ethan Baxter, who is not a rancher, and as soon as see sets her eyes upon the enormous, multi-level, ultra-modern, monstrosity of a home her new husband built for her, in her hometown of Gilt Edge, Montana, she has a premonition, "You will die in this house." Okay--that one line sets the stage for plenty of suspense.
We soon learn that Ethan Baxter threw a lot of surprises at Drey, from announcing their engagement in her hometown newspaper before he even proposed to her, to marrying her in her hometown too. Still broken-hearted about Hawk Cahill, the boy she loved through high school and college and then lost over a misunderstanding, each carrying on their anger with each other for years, she allowed herself to be swept off her feet by polished, New York businessman, Ethan, expecting to live in his NYC penthouse, only to learn at her wedding reception that he planned for her to live in his state-of-the-art monstrosity of a house in Gilt Edge, where she'd no doubt run into her ex-lover Hawk Cahill.
At the wedding reception, also in Gilt Edge, Drey felt odd and rather fuzzy, and since she doesn't drink alcohol, she even declined the champagne served for their wedding toast. After the reception, when Ethan takes her to their new house, she's barely conscious, and while waiting for her new husband to come to bed for their wedding night, instead he disappears without a trace, leaving his car in the driveway, but no note, no mention of why he'd deserted her on their wedding night, and Drey is too fuzzy-minded to do much about about it but go to bed alone.
The next morning, still woozy, Drey finds Ethan is gone, but his younger brother, Jet, is in residence, a brother that Ethan never mentioned having. And the weirdness keeps getting weirder. If you've seen the classic film, Gaslight, you know where this story is going--the parallels are beyond obvious, from Drey's feeling that she's been drugged, to finding what appears to be a human thumb in the garbage disposal, to finding a dead mouse at the bottom of her water bottle--all events denied by Jet, and all of which lead Drey to believe she's losing her mind.
When Hawk is out riding one day, he sees all the house lights turn off and hears Drey screaming, after she finds a dead mouse in her drinking water, and he rides to her rescue, but nothing she tells him appears to be true. The severed finger she saw Jet put in the freezer has disappeared, the water bottle now on her nightstand doesn't contain a mouse, but a bottle of the same meds she was once addicted to in college is suddenly there on her nightstand, and Hawk notices that Drey's speech is slurred. He even presumes that Drey is being gaslighted, but why? Since she's now a married woman, Hawk knows she's off limits, and she's still standing by the thought that Ethan will soon be back and things will be fine--and she couldn't be more wrong.
There's no shortage of strangeness in this novel, and no shortage of suspense, but once Drey stops taking what she believes to be aspirin, and her mind begins to clear, I found her behavior rather odd, and found her to be rather spineless. Since disappearing on their wedding night, Ethan has made no attempt to contact her, yet Jet tells her that Ethan had to rush off to Mexico City on business and will be back soon and she just accepts that explanation, not angered at all by the fact that her absentee husband hasn't bothered to call her at all. Yes, Hawk comes to her rescue more than once, and has reported these strange events to his brother, Flint, the town sheriff, who is also soon contacted by the FBI, and they too are apparently suspicious of Ethan and have been watching the house, yet they never saw Ethan leave.
While the mystery and suspense certainly kept me hooked and wondering what was going on, there was very little romance in this romantic suspense novel. When we're finally told what drove Hawk and Drey apart many years ago, I didn't find the explanation all that believable or credible, and kept wondering why on earth these two characters didn't talk it through at the time and support one another.
In addition, there's a secondary story line in this novel, a carry over from an earlier novel about the cook at the Stagecoach Saloon, Billie Dee, and the daughter she gave up for adoption years ago, and her ongoing search for her daughter. It was a distraction from the main plot of this novel and I wish the author had given this matter it's own novel, or at least novella.
While I'm all for a good, suspenseful read, I found myself less than enthralled by Drey, and kept wishing she'd grow a spine, get angry, and do what I would have done if my husband disappeared on our wedding night and never contacted me--I'd have the marriage annulled and leave his house of horrors for good. Why she kept insisting that Ethan would soon be home and they'd work it out was simply too naive to be believable. Additionally, if Hawk never stopped loving Drey, why did he make no attempt to rekindle their relationship in all the years they were apart. He's certainly shown to be a man of action, yet never even bothered to resolve his issues with Drey. Sorry, but I just wasn't buying it.
If you enjoy mystery/suspense novels, you'll probably enjoy this novel more than I did, and while it's not a bad read, I missed the romance, and I expected more than a mere sidewalk conversation between Drey and Hawk to solve their differences after all their years apart. It was just too little too late for this reader, as was the reason behind all the strange goings-on at Ethan's mansion.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
***Received an Advanced Readers Copy during a blog tour through TLC Book Tours in exchange for an honest review***
Oh my lanta have I found yet another author to binge read? Yes comrades I do believe I have! I am completely blown away, I am in love! This was one of those fast paced, really feel good swoonage kind of reads that makes me love romance genre.
I have a few confessions too… while we are at it! Firstly I went into this thinking I would get nothing but a full on cowboy swoon romance, which I would definitely not complain about, but this novel honestly blindsided me. The romantic suspense of the characters, their dynamics and the budding plot dimensions was refreshing, it was such an amazing read. At many points it wasn’t just Drey questioning her sanity but honestly me – the entire build was creep yet utterly satisfying. And when I wasn’t questioning the unraveling insanity that was the suspenseful driven storyline of Rancher’s Dream, I was swooning for the couple.
Though I LOVED their romance, there was a bit of a point I have to admit it lacked a flare for me that I would have really enjoyed seeing. Because this is a second romance, one with high school sweethearts there wasn’t much in the way of their past. Something I would have really liked to have explored. Don’t get me wrong, it is there but it is slightly vague and there is just a missing sort of essence that I think should have been added to really help aid in the growth of not only the entire plot but the romance itself between Hawk and Drey. They were so sweet and caring, just connected and I think more of their past would have been even better.
Not only did I fall head over heels in love with Drey and Hawk, but it was also the secondary characters who really topped the cake for me. There were such amazing supportive characters that flowed well with the dynamics of the plot and our couple. Nothing was overshadowed nor did they overwhelm the romance. It just… meshed.
I mean honestly… holy nuggets comrades this was a really great read. I enjoyed every minute of it. This is definitely one for the recommendations. If you enjoy complex situations, slow build with a suspenseful air about your romance this is definitely up your alley. Drey and Hawk were absolutely stunning characters, I cannot gush enough about their chemistry, their trust and respect as the plot thicken around them – it was really beautiful.
In this book we have Drey newly married to Ethan Baxter, a wealthy businessman from New York City. She married him in the hopes she could leave Gilt Edge, and Hawk Cahill behind. Her groom has other plans and tells her on their wedding night that they'll be living in Gilt Edge after all in this garish mansion he's built that fits more in a neighborhood of skyscrapers than it does in Montana ranch country.
Disappointed, Drey is determined to make the best of her new life. The dream doesn't last long though because as she goes to bed for the night, waiting for Ethan to come upstairs, she finds herself in the morning hours of the next day and no husband. Wandering the house she realizes he never came to their room and it's like he actually vanished. Soon she meets his brother Jet, that she had no idea existed, under the guise he was late for the wedding but here for a visit. Nothing seems right and soon she finds herself to be a victim of gaslighting. She turns to Hawk Cahill for help, even though they parted under awful terms years ago because she knows of anyone else in town, she can trust him no matter what.
Soon they begin to untangle the mess Drey finds herself in but as they get closer to figuring out what's happening, Drey has to ask herself what is she going to do if Ethan is alive? Does she stay with him despite all of this or does she divorce him and go back to Hawk? None of that matters unless she can get out of the situation alive.
I'm rating this one a 4 star because I flew through it simply because I wanted to know what the heck is even going on! I'll warn you that Drey is easily the most naive, stupid character I have read in a long time. She's like the blond girl in every horror movie who does exactly the wrong thing at every turn and you almost hope she does die so you're done with the character. Honestly, if Drey wasn't so dumb I'd give this 5 stars but man.. she's tough to like. It's classified as a romance novel but there's really almost no romance to be honest, there are a couple of spots where it might happen but it doesn't so if you're looking for a book that has assumed romance but no sex, this is going to be your book.
Holy cow! Could B.J. Daniels have packed more fun, romance or intrigue into this novel!? This is a story that grabbed me from the opening line and kept me engaged the entire 363 pages! As with the other Montana Cahill books, this was about one of the brothers: Hawk and his long-time love Deidre Hunter. Hawk and ‘Drey’ had been together since school days, always planning on marrying. But tragedy and mistrust collided and tore them apart. Now, Drey is marrying a rich businessman and planning on living in Gilt Edge – much to Drey’s dismay. She thought they would live in New York, miles away from Hawk – she would never have to see him. But, Ethan, her new husband has built a fortress right near the Cahill Ranch. Drey resigns herself to seeing Hawk all the time. When Ethan disappears and Drey is all alone in the huge impersonal house that Ethan built, she begins having hallucinations and moments where she can’t quite remember anything. With no Ethan to turn to, she calls on Hawk. He seems to be the only one that believes there is a threat to her. However, they still have the past to overcome and he has to admit he still loves her in spite of everything that happened between them and the fact that she is now a married woman. There is also the story of Billie Dee and her search for her biological daughter she gave up for adoption. And we have the back story of Hawk and Drey. Every page makes you want to turn the next and the next and then it’s three in the morning and you still haven’t finished the book! Argh!! B.J. Daniels is a great story teller. She weaves all the details in and never leaves you hanging with a loose end. She breaks up the suspense at just the right time with the story of Billie Dee and then brings you back into the thrill of the Hawk/Drey story. I received this book for free for an honest review. I would not hesitate to recommend this as a stand-alone book or as part of the Montana Cahill series. It’s a good book and you won’t be sorry you read it. You will just be waiting for the next installment of the series.
I cannot begin to say how much I loved this book! I could not put it down, but I had to - to sleep, to eat, etc.! I sure didn't want to though! As it was, I read it in 2 days and when I came to the end, I let out a long sigh..... B.J. Daniels has done it again. I don't know how some people couldn't just love this book! It has so many roller coaster moments that I was turning the pages as fast as I could! I'm not going to retell the story but Drey and Hawk have been a couple for years and then tragedy & mistrust tore them apart. It's a hard thing when you realize you should have stayed with your first love but then it's too late! Drey is already married to someone else but "newsflash" - Ethan (the husband) hasn't been seen since he dropped Drey off in their bedroom on their wedding night! Suddenly the brother shows up the next day and Drey didn't even know Ethan HAD a brother! This story had me guessing at every turn and just when I thought I had figured something out, ZAP, something new would happen! I loved how Hawk's family was involved too. I love when characters from previous books pop up in new books! You wont regret reading this fabulous book! The characters, the story line, the twists and turns, and the ending were all wonderful! There is a continuing story of the cook at the family café, Billie Dee too so I enjoyed learning more about her story. I received this book free from the author but was not required to write a review. All these opinions are my own. I heartily recommend the book, as you can guess!
I received a copy of RANCHER'S DREAM from the Author and Publisher via Netgalley for an honest review.
This story is the second of the Cahill brothers from Gilt Edge Montana that I have read. Both have been full of suspense with a twist of romance. Rancher's Dream is definitely filled with suspense.
Our heroine, Drey is swept up into a whirlwind romance and finds herself married to a billionaire to get away from long time love Hawk Cahill. Hawk broke her heart and Drey thought she would never find love again. Especially not in Gilt Edge. Yet married to the Easterner, she did not find herself being swept away to New York as she had thought. Oh no. Her husband had surprised her with a mansion just outside of town.
Her wedding night is when she realized things were not what they appeared to be. Who comes to the rescue? Not her husband...but the one man she is still in love with, Hawk Cahill. The one man her body still responds to. Is Hawk real or just a figment of her imagination like so many other things? Several of her premonitions have come to pass. Will her premonitions have come true. Will this last one come true too?
I can't tell you if it did or not. You'll have to purchase the book. I can tell you your purchase will be well worth the price. The characters are intriguing. Daniels keeps you guessing till the very end as to motive and who actually did what and who owns what in the end. She even sets up the next book. I mean, with all that is going on, who has time to do that? This is one romantic suspense that you should purchase! I couldn't put it down!
Dreys husband goes missing the night of their wedding and was told the news that she'd be living closer to her hometown rather then New York like the she led to believe to her dismay. Shes got a bad feeling about this home and on top of that her husbands brother seems like he might be here for a while and shes not comfortable with this situation. She seems to sense something is wrong and the longer shes there shes questioning things like her sanity and might need her ex boyfriend Hawk to help her out.
I really enjoyed this book there was just so much going on. But the thing is there is a mini story within this book that does nothing for the main story that is going on and becomes a sort of distraction since it really doesn't really have a connection to the MC's of the story. I think the author should just make that story as what it is a side story not alternating that way the readers can concentrate on what is presently going on.
Other then that I loved the storyline and the mystery that was going on. I loved seeing the connections the further I got into the book. I thought it was interesting getting to know Drey's POV her questioning her sanity as strange and unusual things occur thought out the book. I loved how protective Hawk was even if they were no longer together and she was married he didn't have to help her the way that he did. I thought it was interesting getting to see their story and why they were not together anymore. Overall it was a pretty great book I really enjoyed it.
Rancher’s Dreams by B.J. Daniels is a tale of lost love and missed chances while missing characters and wild events swirl. It is part of a series called the Montana Cahills, but I have not read any of others. I am grateful to Harlequin for sending me the book to review.
Drey met and married Ethan rather quickly and was disappointed to hear that her new life in NYC was not going to happen. He bought a house in her hometown (a gaudy nightmare of a house) and wanted to settle there. The worst part is she is trapped in the small town where she was a girlfriend to Hawk Cahill and despite an incident that forever broke them up, she still has a tender heart for him. The biggest problem is that Ethan disappeared on their wedding night. Drey doesn’t know what to think, she is feeling dazed and quite confused, like even keeping things straight. On top of that her new brother-in-law showed up and practically moved in. All these terrible dreams and hallucinations keep happening to her. She needs help and turns to the Cahills for help and that is when things get very interesting…
I like how the house was more of a character than a setting. Drey was gullible to suggestion way too often and I am glad she finally wised up. I loved Drey with Hawk and found the romance sigh worthy. Rancher’s Dream by B. J. Daniels was a good read.
Mountain Crest, or as the citizens of Gilt Edge, Montana call it, Baxter's Folly, is to be her new home. Deidre "Drey" Hunter's new husband "surprises" her with this announcement at their wedding reception. Drey was looking forward to living in her new husband's penthouse apartment in New York City. Ethan's decision was quite a disappointment. What was worse - her husband disappears on her wedding night. And this house seems to be sinister and even cursed. Is someone watching Drey? Is someone trying to make her feel unhinged? Where is Drey's husband? Drey is scared, so scared she calls her ex-boyfriend Hawk Cahill for help. Can Hawk help her? What is going on?
B.J. Daniels has another page-turner in Rancher's Dream, the latest release in her Montana Cahills series. The intrigue and suspense rushed off the pages thrilling this reader and I suspect will keep her readers awake well past their bedtime finishing this book so they can find out how this mystery ends. The characters are all so believable as Ms. Daniels' characters usually are. She places the readers in Drey's shoes as she is frightened half out of her mind. I invite readers to enter B.J. Daniels Montana Cahills world and hold on tight for a fast and furious ride.
B J Daniels is my favorite Harlequin romance writer. But then again, hers are the only books in this genre that I read. I enjoy the sibling relationships at the heart of the Montana Cahill series and the way each character's story is featured in a book and then reappears with updates in subsequent installments. In Rancher's Dream, Hawke's high school and college sweetheart, Deidre broke up with him when she wanted to travel the world and he wanted to make her into a wife and mother instead. Now, she's married another man, a millionaire New York businessman named Ethan who disappears after bringing Drey back to her hometown on the night of the wedding, leaving her to depend on Hawke and his Cahill siblings to help her solve the mystery. And what a series of twists and turns, suspense and betrayal this one contains. I have enjoyed most of the books in this series but I was a little underwhelmed by the convenience of the multiple marriages, the reappearance of other people from Drey's past and the eventual resolution of what would have been a terrible love triangle.
on dreys wedding night she goes up to her bedroom but her husband doesn't show up in the morning he is missing but his younger brother jet comes in late from missing the wedding. she thinks jet is trying to poison her with her headache pills and drinks so she gets them tested but they are not.jet says his brother is in mexico on business he called him to let him know but why not call his wife.then she finds his phone in the bedroom balcony but he never goes anywhere without it. than her husband tells jet to go to a hotel instead of staying at the house. when the fbi talk to flint says they have been watching the house and her husband never left the house so he must still be there.so they check the house again hes not there. when drey wakes to the sound of a gun shot she looks out to see jet by the pond holding his stomache his shirt stained red than another shot and he falls into the pond she calls flint he was on his way he tells her to lock the doors and windows in her room and wait there for him he will be there in 5 minutes....
Hawk Cahill and Drey Hunter still love each other but both are stubborn and won’t relent of their anger. Hawk is devastated when Drey marries wealthy Ethan Baxter and moves into his luxury home built on the side of a mountain. Things are not as they seem. Drey realizes she has been drugged and her husband is gone. Then a man arrives and says he is Ethan’s brother Jet, a brother she has never heard Ethan mention. Hawk learns the FBI is investigating Ethan and worries that Drey’s life is in danger.
The book could have been better if Drey’s character did not act so dumb. She always had headaches and felt sluggish but being drugged did not occur to her? Hawk keeps rescuing her but she always says "when Ethan returns...". She believed Jet when he told her he had received a call from Ethan and he was in Mexico. This didn't seem strange to her? She was either too gullible or too stupid.
Talk about a great daniels book. Started it in the afternoon done by the evening. Its about mystery and mayhem. Its also about second chances. I love a book that brings back family together even though we are doing Hawk Cahill and Drey Hunter's story. I love how BJ pulls out all the different ways to cause mayhem in a story and yet create a mystery as to how its being done. The biggest mystery starts at beginning of the story when Drey and her groom enter the house and Ethan disappears. This sets the story of and BJ does a excellent job of weaving her story. You will not be disappointed with this story. Plus a secret will be revealed. What is it you will need to read the book to find out. Its a great book and worth a read. I can't wait for the final book and Cyrus's story it shall be good. If you can go by this!
This one I found to have a bit different flavor than the others in this series. It starts out telling you the story then it plays with your mind like it does Drey's. You also are thinking poor Hawk but you are too caught up with what is going on too. The suspense in this one is the slow roll that will simmer than bring you to a boil kind. This one is a good mystery attached with you loving every step of the way. I also enjoyed the adoption story that continues with loving how this one curls around the mystery with having some answers we all have waited for. The pace was faster than most in this series with the wind blowing at times. This carries its own weight with the romance being embroiled in at just the right places.
Another in the Montana Cahills, this one grabbed me on the first page and refused to let go until I finished the last page. Who wouldn't be similarly affected when a bride looks at the house her new husband has built and imagines that she will die there? Fortunately, the humorous highjinks of the people at the saloon also create hints of a future book when the cook's biological daughter finally shows up. And Drey finally realizes that she has to talk to Hawk Cahill about how she really felt when they broke up years earlier and why. Having Hawk insist on trying to keep her safe was the only thing he could do under the circumstances. If only Drey had realized it earlier. But fortunately, things finally do work out for both of them. Whew! I had my doubts at times.
This book grabbed you by the throat from the first page and keep you turning said pages while reading along..Drey married the wrong guy and she knew it the night they pulled up to the house he had built. She was living in Gilts Edge, when she thought she would live in NY..She is close to her ex love Hawk. But once married things start happening and she doesn't know what is going on..she thinks she is losing her mind...Is she really? If she isn't than what is going on? Hawk hears her screaming one night and runs to her and he thinks she is drugged or drunk...I really loved this book as i love all of B J Daniel's work..I figured out what was happening to Drey but didn't know why it was or who was behind it. A must read in the series!
WHOLLY COW--this is the best, I know--keep on saying that! lol, but BJ just gets better and better!!!! I love BJ's style...she throws you into the book with one mystery immediately, and moves you along and solves yet another, and yet moves freely and swiftly from one scenario to another without so much distraction. this particular series is about 5 brothers and a sister. All about their lives and loves...this book is solely about Hawk Cahill and a woman who once was his love, yet marries another man. Did she make a mistake? is her life in danger? does Hawk come to the rescue? definitely a page turner and hard to put down. I recommend this book!!!
This one had it all. There is mystery, danger and a romance that has been on hold for years. Another of the Cahills bites the dust but not before he almost loses the woman he has loved for years. This starts with Drey getting married to a high powered business man who disappears on their wedding night. There is danger to Drey and the only one she feels she can turn to is Hank. They finally solve their problems as they work to discover what is going on. This is very much a thriller with a side story about a mother finding the daughter she gave away years ago. Nice match to the series.
I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Hawk was always a mystery in the Cahill series but we finally found out what was behind it. Drey was the girl that broke his heart and got away. We finally learn their story when she moves back home to her surprise on her wedding night. This sets up the story in a seriously scary dark goth like house her husband had built. I don’t want to spoil it because it’s something that you really minded to read to believe. There is also a secondary story going on to give your mind a bit of a chance to calm down from the mania in Drey and Hawks life. This is another wild and crazy ride that I is sure worth reading.
