Prayer / My Rock; My Refuge

Rate this book

This ebook combines Timothy Keller's two bestselling titles on prayer. Keller connects a deep understanding of the Bible with contemporary thought, as he addresses the subject of prayer and the daily reality of praying.

Prayer: Prayer is central to Christian faith yet so many people struggle to pray. This wise and inspiring book is offers a real and glorious vision of what it can mean to seek God in prayer. Keller begins by giving a theological underpinning of what prayer actually is - both conversation and encounter with a personal God - before describing how we can learn to pray, and then deepen that prayer. Finally he gives detailed, practical suggestions on how to make prayer a part of the reality of daily life.

My Rock; My Refuge: This devotional offers inspiration for every day of the year, based on the book of Psalms. Here Tim Keller helps readers apply the principles he laid out in his book Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God. He walks them verse by verse through the entire Psalter, the one biblical book designed to teach us how to pray, how to spiritually handle every possible life situation, and how to actually know God.

As per usual this book combines academic reasoning, practical insight, and pastoral sensitivity to talk about a subject that many modern Christians find more difficult than we might care to admit. Prayer is a vital part of Christian life and Keller does a great job explaining its many facets whilst retaining its intimacy.

Whether you're going through a dry patch; on fire for God, or just starting out this is a great read. I would highly recommend.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their prayer life or for anyone who wonders why prayer is so important to daily Christian life.

Keller brings a lot of wisdom from the theological heavy weights including Augustine, Luther and Calvin and condenses their wisdom into a succinct and easy to understand way.

The book is also very well structured for re-readability, being separated into self-contained parts. Each individual part is important as part of the whole, but you can go back later and re-read a part without having to re-read the rest of the book for context.

This book is my quintessential text book on prayer.

This book is a real thought provoking book. Using great minds like Augustine, Luther, Calvin, John Owen, John Buynan, Jonathan Williams and many others.

However, this is a very long book and took some time and concentration to fully grasp. Subsequently, if your looking for a way to understand prayer OR a new way to pray OR strengthen your prayer life. I fully encourage you to read this book

Excellent and practical book on prayer, drawing from traditional writings of Luther, Augustine, Calvin, and others. It seems to be a thorough coverage of the subject, with lots of practical outlines to help us learn to pray with more thoughtfulness and awareness of the presence of God. I will go through it again, and try out some of his suggestions, particularly on meditation.
