The church can be a hopeful model for the world in emerging areas of culture and ministry. Topics in this book include gender, technology, justice, mission, story, and social entrepreneurship. Each chapter is written by one of the three authors. Each chapter concludes with a jointly written "communion" section that has ideas for working together as leaders, lay people and congregations with practical steps to pave the way.
Matt Rawle is Lead Pastor at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bossier City, LA. Matt is an international speaker who loves to tell an old story in a new way, especially at the intersection of pop culture and the church.
Matt has a B.A. in music from LSU and an M.Div. from Duke Divinity School. He and his wife Christie have three daughters. Matt loves meditating on Scripture, listening to the heart of God, and inspiring people to do the work of God—Love. He also loves thinking about new ways to tell an old story.
He is the author of a new series of books titled The Pop in Culture Series. The series includes The Faith of a Mockingbird, Hollywood Jesus, and The Salvation of Doctor Who.
I wish this book was required reading for every single member of Methodist clergy and lay service. I wish it was a required study for every single Methodist Sunday School class and/or small group. I wish I had an appointment so I could fully see it put to work. And I want to thank the authors for it because I do feel refreshed, revived, and hope-full after reading it. As small as it is, it is packed with information, ideas, inspiration and, most importantly, insight, wisdom, guidance, and encouragement. I strongly recommend this book. This, more than any of the other UMC-related books I've read recently, speaks to who we (the UMC/Methodists) should be.
