How To Write A Book: (or tackle anything you find daunting)

Rate this book
I write answers on Quora, the question and answer site, and collect these answers into books.
Ever since I came across Quora, I have published a book every six months.
Many people have questions about this. Why do I do this? How? What is my process?
I recently did a “taking questions” session on Quora about this very subject.
This here is a compilation of my answers, so you have them all in one place.
I hope they inform you, but beyond that I hope they inspire you. I hope you finally get around to writing a book, or tackling anything you previously considered overwhelming.

After working for more than 20 years in the communications industry, Dushka noticed a theme.

People find it very difficult to articulate who they are and what they do.

This holds true for both companies and for individuals.

For companies, this is an impediment to the development of an identity, a reputation, a brand.

It makes it hard for customers to see how companies are different from their competitors.

For individuals, in a new world order of personal brands, it makes it hard to develop one that feels real.

This is the focus of Dushka's work: she helps companies and people put into simple terms who they are, what they do, and where to go next.

Her work comes to life through message development, presentation training, media training and personal brand development.

It comes to life through executive coaching, workshops and public speaking.

It comes to life through what she writes.

Dushka has written nine books:

How to be ferociously happy and other essays

Amateur: an inexpert, inexperienced, un-authoritative, enamored view of life

A spectacular catastrophe and other things I recommend

Your seat cushion is a flotation device and other buoyant short stories

Someone destroyed my rocket ship and other havoc I've witnessed at the office

How to build a pillow fort and other valuable life lessons

You belong everywhere and other things you'll have to see for yourself

Love yourself and other insurgent acts that recast everything

Feelings are fickle and other things I wish someone had told me.

Dushka writes every day on question and answer site Quora and has also published an e-manual that outlines step by step how to write a book.

It's a short book(58 pages).

I absolutely loved one message that stuck in my mind which is helpful for me:
to always have internal reasons while choosing to do anything and if we have external reasons, it's highly possible to get disappointed later.

The same Dushka Zapata style - authentic, sassy, beautiful. I liked the part where she talked about writing because you want to satisfy your internal urge, to achieve an internal mission instead of running after an external reward. Writing becomes easy when you perceive any creative endeavor this way 🤓

Awesome

I’m thinking of writing a book and this was inspiring and interesting and it pushed me into wanting so badly to get started and keep going. I recommend reading this whether or not you plan to write a book of your own.

Short and Crisp, just like Dushka's answers

I liked the book.

I would have really liked it, had it been a little longer and less about Quora answers than about life in general (I may have misunderstood the title, or did I?)

I loved this

This book is really short, and I loved it. This is something you could sip quietly through the days learning one new thing at a time.
I am already familiar with Dushka’s writings through quora and this book format is really cool.

It will motivate you to start writing everyday.

Cons

It is unstructured and and some part may be irrelevant for you.

It is short and lacks depth.

A quick, crisp, and helpful read! As usual, this ebook is a compilation of answers written by the author on the Quora platform. So if you've followed the author on Quora, there is a good chance, you might have come across these wordy gems before. Nevertheless, this book is a one-shot stop for writing-related guidance and motivation. The author describes her way of connecting the dots to come up with a themed book and clearly specifies what she does and doesn't write. Moreover, her take on creativity is my favourite part of the book - the creator gets to decide! The book is heavily recommended, more so because it takes only a few minutes to finish. :)

Happy reading!

Dushka Zapata Lives!

Just back from a Sri Lankan adventure I shared with Dushka Zapata, I thought I’d give her book a try. I loved her company on the trip. She was fun, witty, smart & bravely authentic. I expected her book would reflect that. What I didn’t expect was to so vividly see her smile, hear her crazy laugh or feel her emotions through each word. I felt like I was back in the fabulously humid Sri Lanka atmosphere soaking up life with a kindred spirit. I began this book while still in bed, couldn’t put it down till it was properly devoured. But when I did, I hopped up feeling so inspired to charge into my day.
