Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

Murray was Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Murray became a noted missionary leader. His father was a Scottish Presbyterian serving the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, and his mother had connections with both French Huguenots and German Lutherans. This background to some extent explains his ecumenical spirit. He was educated at Aberdeen University, Scotland, and at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After ordination in 1848 he served pastorates at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington. He helped to found what are now the University College of the Orange Free State and the Stellenbosch Seminary. He served as Moderator of the Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church and was president of both the YMCA (1865) and the South Africa General Mission (1888-1917), now the Africa Evangelical Fellowship.

He was one of the chief promoters of the call to missions in South Africa. This led to the Dutch Reformed Church missions to blacks in the Transvaal and Malawi. Apart from his evangelistic tours in South Africa, he spoke at the Keswick and Northfield Conventions in 1895, making a great impression. upon his British and American audiences. For his contribution to world missions he was given an honorary doctorate by the universities of Aberdeen (1898) and Cape of Good Hope(1907).

Murray is best known today for his devotional writings, which place great emphasis on the need for a rich, personal devotional life. Many of his 240 publications explain in how he saw this devotion and its outworking in the life of the Christian. Several of his books have become devotional classics. Among these are Abide in Christ, Absolute Surrender, With Christ in the School of Prayer, The Spirit of Christ and Waiting on God.

Of my top ten Christian classics, three titles are by Andrew Murray so I was prepared to enjoy The Power of the Blood of Jesus. Still, it was more theologically dense than some of his other books.

One of Murray’s most helpful insights was on the holiness of God. We often think only of its negative aspect, i.e., that He hates sin. But Murray points out that the positive side of His holiness is that He is good, loves goodness and wants to make us good (holy). Holiness, as we wrongfully understand it, is the priggish keeping of rules. But to Murray "Holiness is a disposition in entire agreement with that of God, which chooses in all things to will as God wills. It is nothing more than oneness with God, effected by intimacy with Him."

Chapter 8 had a helpful explanation of Christ’s words in John 6:53 (“Drink my blood”). He who “drinks” the blood of Jesus, receives Christ’s eternal, abundant life into himself. Only as we allow Him to fill us with Himself can we live the Christian life. This is the resounding theme of all of Murray’s books - the fruitfulness of a life completely surrendered to Christ.

If you are new to Murray, I would suggest either his books Humility or The True Vine to introduce you to these important ideas. But if you are ready for something a little meatier, The Power of the Blood of Jesus will certainly stretch your thinking.

Great. Who knew Andy Murray could play super tennis and write such great theological works? Boom boom! Ho ho ho. But seriously, REALLY good insights, just knocked a star off cos I find Andrew Murray's writing to be hard work and not particularly enjoyable to read. It's an effort, but worth it.

I read this book particularly because I was writing a preach on the blood of Jesus and wanted to be sound in my teaching.

Christians often talk of the efficacy of the blood of Jesus as protection or cleansing, but the blood of Jesus is so much deeper and so much more than we could ever imagine.

Totally recommend, take your time, it's not an easy read though.

This is one of the best books I have read on Christian spirituality. Murray clearly explains and applies the truth of Scripture regarding the precious "blood of Christ" for human salvation, wholeness and restoration. I have never seen any other exposition of this biblical teaching quite like this. I cannot recommend this book enough for those who have genuine faith in the Lord Jesus Christ or for those who want to know the truth about how God has provided for human beings.

Buenos pensamientos devocionales.

An Eternal Truth that NEEDS forever; even in this modern culture respected and reverence !

Must be digested by every believer who looks to the work done when Jesus was out to death on the cross of crucifixion .

This book is great for those have doubts about the body and blood of Jesus doctrine. Andrew does a fantastic job laying out the significance, the history, the meaning of each cleansing, sanctifying, purifying, eating, drinking and living action of the blood.
At various places the publisher has made a note that they do not believe that the sacrament of the Eucharist is necessary but to be only in remembrance.
How does one attribute all the millions of miracles, transubstantiation and Corpus christi examples of the real flesh and blood.
Thankfully Andrew seems to stray away from Luther in saying that a believer who partakes of the flesh and blood will live in the blood of the Christ and its power.
There are various intricate details of the book supported by David and Paul verses that make for very interesting study of Scripture. Things like the power is available to true hearts, but what is a true heart. And how to live under the auspice of the blood. I really enjoyed reading this book but for anyone reading, I would say discern and read, know your own faith well even as you read this book. The Holy Spirit will guide you as you delve into this deep mystery. In the end, all our understand is naught. As Andrew suggests subject yourself to the heart searching spirit.

I remember how, when I was in Bible school, my favorite subject was the blood covenant. I loved learning about the blood, what it means and what significance it has. That's why, when someone recommended this author to me, this was the first book I chose to read.

That He really gave Himself for us, not because it was laid upon Him to do so, but by the impulse of a love that longed for us that we might be identified with Him forever.

This is such a strong message that really conveys to the reader what the blood of Jesus means for us. With what love it was shed for us. What it has done for us. What we can have if we put our faith in it. I believe that a lot of Christians need to become more aware of the power of the blood of Jesus on a deeper level. This would be a good book to start doing that, and it's also available on Google Play for free.

There is nothing in this book that would be considered truly new, eye-opening, or revolutionary. No, this is a book that pretty much runs right down the center of an orthodox Calvinist view of salvation.

That said, this book is still one that should be read. All too often the concept of blood gets sidelined or downplayed in sermons and messages throughout churches of the West be they fundamentalist, Evangelical, or liberal. It isn't that we deny the doctrine. It is more that we downplay it (if not outright ignore it) in an attempt to make the gospel a bit more palatable for a modern audience. Murray makes it clear that this cannot be done while remaining true to scripture. The blood of Christ is not just a theme found in scripture. It is one of the central themes of scripture from Genesis to Revelation. Without the shedding of blood there is no redemption from sin.

From time-to-time I become a little repulsed by the notion of the blood of Christ. Indeed, at those times, I'd go as far as to say that I've feared that the Bible tends to depict an unhealthy consideration of the blood of Christ.

This book sets things right.

I now understand that the blood is important for Christ's satisfaction of the law, his ascension to the Father, the blotting out of my sins, my intercession for others, guarantee of my entry to heaven and provision for my eternal life in heaven (and more).

Murray makes his argument very powerfully in parts of the book. There was little by way of Murray's pastoral ministry with people about the blood of Christ yet that which was in the book was very helpful.

While the subject is covered well and I would probably say as completely as one can biblically, the writing style causes this book to be a very hard read. I would love the contents of this book to be covered by a better writer. Great doctrine, tough read. Final grade - C+

Deeply theological discussion of the meaning of the blood of Jesus as it affects salvation, holiness, power in spiritual warfare. Key thoughts
--There can be no approach to God, no fellowship with Him by faith, no enjoyment of His favor, apart from the blood.
--The sinner is ensalved under the hostile power of Satan, the curse of the Law, and sin. The blood of Jesus paid the debt of guilt and destroyed the power of Satan, the curse, and sin.
--Sin is determined opposition to a holy God. It not only an, but must awaken His wrath.
--When Jesus took on flesh He assumed the responsibility for all that sin had done in the flesh against God.
--Holiness is that attribute of God, because of which, He always is and wills and does what is supremely good; because of which also He desires what is supremely good in His creatures and bestows it upon them. It is His holiness which ever wills what is good for all that moved Him to redeem sinners.
--Jesus' blood is the promise and the power of a participation in God's holiness.
--The sprinkling of the blood, which sanctifies man unto God and takes possession of him for God, bestows at the same time the right of intimacy...drawing near the throne into the very presence of God....to enjoy His love, and fellowship and protection and blessing.
--The Spirit makes real in our experience the work Jesus has accomplished.

Many modern churches dwell on Gods grace and mercy, but this small tome by Murray reaches into the depth of what spurs it all: the blood of Christ; His love that spurred Him to be the sacrifice for us; that opened the depths of heaven to us; that cleanses and redeems us and brings us the eternal power to live contrary to satan’s domain.

By the blood of Jesus, Satan was cast out of heaven and is powerless over those who rely on what Jesus accomplished on the cross that no other man could accomplish. It took me months to read this book for I’d read a page or two or come on a thought I wanted to think about. A month’s absence from home also delayed my progress, but I knew I wouldn’t have time to ruminate on what I read.

If you have the time or want to delve deeper in faith you can’t go wrong with believers from centuries ago who scoured the scripture and their hearts in their desire to know God. Andrew Murray was a South African writer and pastor in the 1800’s and died around 1917.

A thorough and detailed explanation of what the blood of Jesus does for a believer. From the old testament to the new testament, Murray explains scriptures relating to the power and results of the blood. From a blood sacrifice at Mount Moriah, to Passover, to the blood covenant at Sinai, Murray discusses how God used the blood, spoke about the blood and rescued believers from death by the blood.

Most of the book explains redemption, reconciliation, cleansing, sanctification, holiness and the life and victory over Satan that comes because of the blood. Murray encourages readers to seek a deeper understanding as to live with assurance that the blood cleanses all sin. He suggests yielding yourself to God and being brought near by the blood (declared legally righteous PG 106) will give you life and victory over Satan and temptations (PG 103) and allow you come before God's throne in fellowship.

A Christian author attempting to promote a Biblical understanding of the blood of Jesus Christ deserves high marks. MacArthurites (That would be "Grace To You" John F.) on the right along with Liberals on the left have done all they can to confuse and confound the issue.

But this "classic" is a bit convoluted in it's own right. Bad Bible translations, weak exegesis and unsound interpretation (at times) call for a 3 of 5 star rating. Recommended with caution to seasoned students of the Book who are grounded and settled in Biblical doctrine (Dispensational, Baptist, fundamental preferrably).

I thought I understood the significance of Christ’s death on the cross but I was woefully mistaken. There are so many layers to uncover and study that transform your heart when it comes to the shedding of Christ’s blood. There is no more fitting title than “The POWER of the Blood of Christ.” Christ’s blood is awe-striking. I feel incredibly fortunate to have partaken in a Bible study that introduced this book to me. It was an absolutely incredible read. Easily the best Christian book I’ve read to date and know I will revisit many times. I have a feeling with each read, more and more of those layers will reveal itself.

Five-star book, two-star editing.
I recommend this book to any Bible-believing person. The analysis is impeccable. I especially commend the author for help and insight in what it means to have one's conscience purged. The blood of Jesus has power, so does this book.
Alas the edition pictured here, which I used, was clearly made from computer scans and was not edited very much. I could figure out some errors, e.g. "clone" was supposed to be "done." However, some mashups of letters and numbers were unintelligible. Great book, but find a different edition.

Hard to read

This would be a real blessing if the writer had checked the multiple spelling and grammatical errors throughout the entire book. I have tried twice to read this book and gave it up at 55% I went try again and sorry Andrew Murray I wont risk buying anymore in case they are the same. Pity really. Very disappointed. Honestly can't recommend because of these issues only.

Deep but simple knowledge of Gods love

The blood of the lamb has done more for us than what most of us realize!! There is a deeper understanding of this blood that will open up to anyone the treasurers of heaven.

But the deeper understanding is simple to read but it takes some work to overcome our past thought processes to walk into this glorious truth.

Read this book more than once and learn your place in Gods kingdom here and now!

Nothing but the blood

A great read that emphasises the importance the blood of Jesus in redemption, sanctification & life. Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins. Thank God Jesus shed His own blood for us! There are some typos in the text though & sometimes they affect how a sentence should read. A great reminder of what the blood of Jesus has accomplished for us & in us.

So good and so worth reading. There were certainly a few parts that confused me or that I'm not sure I agree with.
But for the most part, it was a wonderful book, devoted to all that Jesus' blood has accomplished for us. Thank you, Jesus.

I especially loved chapters 6 and 7, which dwelt on how Jesus' sacrifice for us lets us "draw near" to God. Murray focused on several passages in Hebrews during these chapters.
