When Barry Ottoman's idyllic, solitary, lifestyle is shattered by the appearance of unwanted interlopers with a mysterious agenda and intent on harm, he must call upon his vast knowledge of Australia's northern rain-forest's flora and fauna, to effect an escape from a deadly pursuit.
Josef owns and manages a caravan park in NSW, Australia with his wife, Sandy. Born in Germany, he emigrated to Australia in 1964 with his parents and two brothers. He began writing at an early age, but only became serious about producing a self-published work recently. He writes for the pure enjoyment of it and will not be quitting his day job any time soon. He has written in many genres, producing a biographical account and a fiction novel, but is passionate about science-fiction. Other worlds and particularly, other sentient species, holds a profound interest for the author; a subject he hopes to include in upcoming novels.
Hats off to the author for writing a book that even has the aussie 'accent'. It was utterly awesome. The aussie slang terms he used, the way the main character Bazza spoke, even Cheese by the end of the book was aussie slanging it. I wasn't sure when I started the book if I'd like it but it wasn't too far in that I realised I was loving it. Great job.
Of Josef Peters books before but I will certainly be on the out for more, from now on! At first I wondered what in the world I was reading. I figured after a couple of pages I was done. Instead I figured, what the neck and read some more and more until I finished the entire book!! It was absolutely delightful. I loved it. I wish it could be made into a series. It's humorous, informative, suspenseful nail biting, a thriller and magic!! How in the world did Josef Peeters come up with this unique story? And then the way the H talked was hilarious!! I was sorry to see the story end. I highly recommend this book! I promise you won't be sorry.
Well I am exhausted from reading this thriller of a book that was having the reader constantly on the move in the jungles of Australia hunting and mostly being hunted!! Bazzo has perfected his life of solitude on a patch that he has carved out for himself and his girls (chickens) All of this is shattered when he discovers a car crash not too far from his place with 2 bodies in it; this does not set well with him and while he is puzzling over this finds a third body in his cave but this one is alive! He does what he feels obligated to do and tends her wounds and helps her regain her health but then 2 more people show up on the beach and after that the people keep on coming. Unfortunately for Bazzo they are not there for a scenic getaway and this is where the book really takes off!!
Now that was a refreshing, fun story, I couldn’t put it down. I only hope that Mr Peeters has not finished with these fantastic characters, or story line.
Very much enjoyed the world of the Australian rainforest. Interesting protagonist. Really bad, bad guys. Terrific suspense that builds throughout the tale.
From the locale to the characters this one is a winner! Even though it took a bit to get to the thriller part of the book, my interest never flagged. I would love to see more from this writer set in the rainforest. The location was as much a character as the people. Terrific book.
A remote and isolated property in far North Queensland tropical rainforest area is where Bazza (Barry) Ottoman lives his hermetic lifestyle. Generally self-sufficient except for an annual trip to Cairns to sell his wood carvings, pay bills such as rates and buy foods he can’t provide for himself and neighbours with a native tribe led by Boinga Bob who has regular but infrequent visits. He lives in a tree house which he calls The Cathedral but also has a cave where he stores and works on his carvings. The descriptions of the landscape with it’s tropical flora and fauna and weather conditions is excellent - you really feel like you are there.
Bazza’s lifestyle ceases when an injured woman suffering also from amnesia turns up in his cave - she can’t remember her name so he calls her Cheese as her body is a ‘shredded’ from the accident. This is only the start and dramatic events keep rolling on to continue this decimation of his way of life.
Bazza is a true blue Aussie male who speaks very broadly and with quite of lot of colloquial expressions. He is a believable character, though some may find his speech difficult to follow as it is spelt as it is spoken! Cheese grows on you as a character. The nasty men in the story are definitely the BAD GUYS.
The story is not just Good versus Bad as there as a lot of grey areas with the characters and the storyline. The story becomes quite complex but the central theme is maintained so it doesn’t become bogged down. The story flowed and becomes very intense making it a book you do really want to continue reading. At one stage I did feel a little overwhelmed by the dramatic occurrences but it does come together in the end.
An easy novel to read with a relaxed writing style with quite a lot of action. I would recommend this novel however you need to be prepared for the Aussie slang which is very realistic but is very broad, but not unusual for outback Far North Queensland.
Thank you to Goodreads and to the author Josef Peeters for a copy to read and review.
What a thriller. The author makes you feel like you are right there in the middle of the action. The well developed characters are in constant turmoil and fighting for their lives. It was easy to picture the remoteness of Australia. The pages and constant action flew by, and, before you realized you were reading the final page. The ending was a complete surprise.
Quick read, characters that leave you rooting for the good guys and cursing the bad ones. Unexpected ending but one that will leave you feeling satisfied
I loved this book. It was a wonderfully long book, which I appreciated, as I couldn’t put it down. Packed with adventure but enough description and dialogue to make it vivid, this book took me on wild adventure that I was sad to finish.
This was a great adventurous story. I enjoyed the characters build up and the suspenseful thrilling storytelling was eventful. What I didn't like about this author's way of writing is there overuse of wording. The use of big words that the meaning of them in the situation of the place, person and situation doesn't match up. The writer tries too hard try and sound very smart in being a writer using extensive vocabulary, when the characters created doesn't cause for it. It just didn't read right most times. Other than that the book was great.
Meh. Twisted tale of aboriginal lifestyle clashing with modern culture in that ol' good-vs-evil
Many ridiculously implausible/impossible scenarios, though that is a writer's prerogative. Sadly, the composition is poor, wordy and disorganized, and frequently grammatically fractured, even according to British English rules of grammar.
A fun read, but not an appetizer for more or anything of similar quality.
Thank you to the Goodreads team for my free copy back in 2018. I just finished reading the book. It’s a tropical thriller about living in the Daintree Rainforest, Australia. The main character, Bazza, uses lots of Aussie slang, jargon, and a very typical accent. I enjoyed reading the book, it’s humorous, heart-pumping, and loving while it can be a bit rude. I’m so interested in how people can survive living self-sufficient in nature remotely.
Having visited Australia I enjoyed the story involving many twists and turns, along with the Aussie jargon used thru out the transcript. The main characters were a delight and represented themselves perfectly adding value to the tale. Will definitely be reading this author again. Well done! DES
This was an absolute thriller. Non-stop action and suspense, just when you think the hero has won, something worse comes along. At first the Okker language of Bazza annoyed me slightly, but by the end you couldn't imagine it any other way. Great reading.
Really great. The story was totally new and even tho it was set in Australia I understood every word. As much adventure story as an educational one. I even fell a little in love with Bazza.
