AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Emmie and her friend Booker are going to sled on Snowball Run during a snow day. Emmie’s little brother, Owen, gets to come along for the first time too. Unfortunately, Snowball Run is a big hill and Owen gets tired of climbing to the top very quickly. Emmie decides they need a plan to get Owen to the top without having to carry him themselves. They head home to have hot chocolate and recruit their mom for help. She helps them create a pulley system to get Owen to the top of the hill much more quickly.

This was a great combination of a fictional, relatable story for kids, and a science concept that solves a realistic problem that they might actually encounter. I liked that the children asked the mom for help and that she was able to convey the scientific concept because she worked in construction. It was nice to see a female in that role. There are science concepts defined in different parts of the book and a page of scientific inquiry information along with an experiment in the very back.
