One half grit, one half gumption, one half gallantry; R.L. McSterlingthong IS literacy. An author so infused with unadulterated wisdominance, he continues to blow away genre boundaries with his indelible magnitude. Forged in the fiery crucible of Ridgewood, New Jersey, the twin gifts of writing and storytelling weaved themselves into the very fabric of his clothing at an early age. During his sophomore year at Panama State University, McSterlingthong completed his first novel, “Dragon Quest”; the touching tale of a Bulimic Serpent in the land of Durr who embarks on a quest to touch the magical rainbow of the hallucinogenic Dwarfs. Although this novel was never published, it attracted the attention of famed literary agent, Tanya Denstein, who, after 37 drinks, decided to sign McSterlingthong as a client. Under Tanya’s careful tutelage, it was not long before R.L.’s next book, The Anklet of Power was published.

McSterlingthong has spent over 43 years practicing Wun-beg-eh, an ancient Canadian martial art that relies on echo location. He can often be seen sprinting through the Wallingford neighborhood at 2 A.M. in the traditional ceremonial “invisibility ninja” garb shouting out his echo locating bleats as he hones these vital skills. An avid fencer, McSterlingthong has designed and built over 2000 fences in the Puget Sound area from chain-link to cedar for both civilians and corporate clients. As with many fantasy novelists, he is a fully trained animal psychiatrist and has worked at the local and national level to assist horses who are coping with Feline Leukemia.

Now a full time writer, R.L. lives beneath a power sub-station in downtown Seattle.

The Screaming Codpiece delivers exactly what you think it will if you read the author bio. It is a story that is random as all hell, told by an author who is more interested in making you laugh than think, and that is not a bad thing. The jokes come thick and fast with more shooting wide than landing, but they come in such rapid-fire that even with the misses, you get enough laughs to make it work.

The story is as nonsensical as you'd expect. With his great army defeated, Nectar must rely on an ancient and evil codpiece to power him to victory. If only he can hold onto his soul long enough to use it... So much merry nonsense, but it does surprisingly work.

The story is fun and fast, and there are moments of genius, like mainly around Nectar using his dead friend as a tool to solve various puzzles. However, some of the jokes fail to land, well, lots of them, to be fair, not that it stops the author trying, and while you can't blame a gal for trying, you'll tire of some of the gags long before the book ends.

So overall, it tries too hard and is not as funny as it thinks, but still, it is fun and different and worth a couple of quid of anyone money.
