They put us to sleep when they launched us into the darkness of space and time. Painless? I suppose it was. Until the Etlak brought us back to consciousness and I realised that I didn't know where my home was, how far away, or in which direction.
I read this book as a teenager and loved it so I reread it for a Reading Challenge. It's out of print and fairly obscure so it was hard to find a copy!
Shayla is one of a handful of survivors from Earth. She now lives on an alien planet and is trying to figure out where she and her people fit with the indigenous species of this planet, the Etlak. There's some action, intrigue, and romance in this book so it's hardly any wonder that I lapped it up as an angsty teenager! It's always nice rediscovering childhood books - my sentimentality helps to gloss over any dubious parts of a story.
