Excerpt from A Study of the Transformer Magnetic Circuit

The alternating current transformer has opened up and made possible the development of a branch of electrical industry which a few years ago would have seemed impossible. Perhaps the m st striking illustrations of electrical development along the line referred to above the generation of electric power at Niagara, and its subsequent economical transmission to Buffalo, and the performance of the Fresno plant in California. In this latter, power is developed by a water fall and transmitted to Fresno, a distance of thirty five miles. Step up transformers are used at the generating end. The line tension in both cases is about eleven thousand volts. Step down transformers are used at the distributing end.
