I enjoyed this, as I enjoy poetry. I believe the poems are bit outdated and that not all of the students would find it fun and interesting. Some of the poems almost seem a little bleak for younger students, such as the one about a boy being eaten by a lion. If I was to use this, I would pull out certain poems that were funny or taught a lesson so that I could monitor which ones I believed to be appropriate.

Isabel Wilner, Miss Wilner to me, was a true treasure. I had the great luck to have her for my elementary school librarian between 1952 and 1957. She knew all the books, or so it seemed to me, and could easily recommend books to suit each of us. She'd begin our library sessions by reading from a particular book, and at the end of her reading, we eagerly competed to get her to give us the copy to check out.

Some time after I'd "graduated" from sixth grade, it seems that she collected up poetry that would appeal to children in consultation with those very children. While this book was published some twenty years after my time, I recognized a number of the poems, and pretty much enjoyed them all. The book was even better with the addition of rather a number of little cartoons that Miss Wilner had drawn and which she sprinkled throughout the book.

As far as elementary school poetry goes, my fondest recollection was Miss HIll in third grade. She had a little collection of poems that she'd pick out and read to us. My guess is that Miss Wilner and Miss Hill got together from time to time to discuss various poems suitable for children.

One final nice thing about this book, although it won't be a feature for anyone else, is that within the confines of the volume I have I found a few lines I wrote myself in third or fourth grade and read to the class, along with a group of observing college students. My recollection is that one of the college students rather bust a gut when I read about fleas, bees, trees, breeze, and cheese. I'll spare you all the details of that poem.

Large compilation of poems (by numerous poets) intended for children. Incredible assortment of types of poems and poem subject matter. Share poems with children as either an introduction to poetry or as poetry practice. Different types and levels of poetry appropriate for any elementary classroom.

I met Isabel Wilner during a course on Children' Literature at Towson University. What a grand librarian she has been. The poems in this book are definitely meant for sharing and I have used them with much success for 20 years now.
