When a spring breaker is found with his head all but removed along the side of a posh Miami Beach hotel, Lieutenant Nash Harrington is tasked with tracking down the person responsible.
But the dead college kid in the bushes is only the beginning. The victim came to town with friends—friends who start dropping like flies.
Just as the lieutenant closes in on his killer, the case takes an immediate left turn into the unknown, a place where Harrington could find himself directly in harm’s way.

Poor, So far this series has been dreadful. The 203 pages seems liked 3,003 pages. that two in a row for the E.H. Reinhard series. Authors Series featuring Carl and Hank was far superior. Left this mess on he selves. Two very liberal stars out of a possible five stars. Giving, "Beset", two stars was giving this yarn the benefit was being very optimistic to say the least. Drop this series.
Action from the first page. The killers perspective is driving the story, but Harrington and his team are right behind . You find yourself torn between wanting revenge (killers story), and Harrington catching the killer before more bodies turn up. Then there's a twist!
Well written police drama with lots of action and killings. The plot was captivating. If you are looking for even a little romance, you won’t find it in this book.
I discovered this author last week when I downloaded and the first book in the series (it was free.) I downloaded this one as soon as I finished that one. Each of them is short, but both are high-interest and fast-paced reads. The author’s writing is somewhat unpolished considering his number of published novels, but even this language arts teacher found it easy to overlook the occasional grammar error or awkward sentence.
As I have stated before in the first of this series, the author lacks the panache of an exciting novel. There is no intrigue or “who dunnit”. I download the first three novels of the Lt Harrington series so I will give it one more try.
"Beset" is a police procedural suspense. The reader sees what the murderer is doing and why even as the police work the case and start closing in. While I did want the police to stop the murderer (she was in full-out revenge mode), she also wanted to stop these 4 men from continuing to do what they did to her (drugged, very violent gang rape, left for dead) and the police weren't stopping them. I wish the story had ended with either other victims speaking out or linking some rape-murders to these men rather than just hinting that she was right about their continuing activities. The author just tells us they have plenty of evidence and moves on to a dog trick competition without fully wrapping up the outcomes of the case for the reader.
The main characters were likable, it's implied that justice will be served to all guilty of a crime, and the action was interesting. Though horrid things happened in the past and during the killing spree, the gory details were minimal. The focus was more a summary of what happened and how people reacted to seeing it. If simply being told that a person was stabbed repeatedly in certain place turns you off, then this book won't be for you. There was a fair amount of bad language. There was no sex.
Disappointing ending. The smart, determined, female victim of a gang of serial rapists who left her for dead is ignored by the police, so she decides to take her own revenge. She just about gets it done, but she's killed by the final rapist who manages to live. Even though he is captured be the police, and we assume he'll get his punishment, the ending is supremely unsatisfying. Even if she didn't get her final man, she was the focus of the entire story. The way she was abruptly disposed of, we didn't even witness her death, was dismissive, just as dismissive as what happens to rape victims in the justice system every day. She should have escaped or triumphed over her rapist, even if she was killed or captured by the police in the end.
The only fault I have with the story and probably one not recognized except by a cop is Nash Harrington as line of duty shooting. With our choice he would have been put on administrative leave while internal affairs did their investigation. No choice. No cop takes two rounds to the vest and keeps wording. Internal injury can occur from impact to the vest by a bullet. Harrington would have been transported to the hospital without choice. The department would have insisted. Minor details but those that are recognized by cops. Still a good story
A true Christie esque storyline that makes you wonder what makes each character ti ck. It keeps the reader on the edge of their seat whilst still having different scenarios being brought in. At times the female lead drops little subtle hints about what and why side is engaged in these acts of violence but the reader needs to be on their toes to garner the clues. This is an exceptional book which any reader of mystery will enjoy thorou g Ily.
Have read nothing by Reinhard that was a poor effort. Have read novels that were varied degrees of good. ;-). Beset is a police procedural set in Miami. The aspect of this effort that truly surprised me is the boredom associated with police work Reinhard is able to make interesting. There are moments in this work that are filled with tension and which grab the reader, but the day to day police work will pull the reader into the story. Well done, Mr. Reinhard, well done.
There is some serious revenge going on in this book! You really want the murderer to get away with their crimes, you know it's wrong, but you've got to sympathise, I would say with the bad guy, but who really is the bad guy! The books from this author have some really bad crimes, but they are really kind of boring because they stretch the story out so long
Very interesting development of characters and the unintended consequences of their extreme actions, Story is told with good insight - characters have history, have experienced personal harm and have used those experiences to drive them forward for good and some for evil,
This author writes so well and keeps me turning pages long after bedtime. Lt. Harrington sounds like a real person and I would love to know if he is based on anyone in particular, or just made up in Reinhard's mind. Will read many of these entertaining books. Keep 'an coming!
GOOD POLICE PROCEDURAL, VERY BELIEVABLE, ACTUALLY FELT I WAS TAGGING ALONG. THE BODY COUNT KEPT RISING AND STILL THEY GOT NOTHING JUST DEAD BODIES AND DEAD ENDS. EXTRA DETAILS BOGGED DOWN THE STORYLINE, I DID SKIM OVER SOME OF IT. THE ENDING JUST POPPED UP WHEN I WASN’T EXPECTING IT…. I STILL WONDER JUST HOW MANY BULLETS DID THE KILLER HAVE IN THAT STOLEN GUN, HUMMM?? ;D
I actually read the second Harrington series first, not knowing there was a first. Apparently I liked what I read so here I am. I didn’t like the first book as much as this one. I like police procedural books, especially ones without convoluted plots and still keep you at the edge of your seat. Just one question remains: did Lucky win this time?
She is going to get them all for what they've done. She's been training, modifying her appearance, learning new skills. The day finally came. All dressed up she went out the first one was almost too easy. No clues left. The others you have to read yourself. It will keep you wondering how, who and why. Great job. Thank you.
Another tale by Mr. Reinhard that's tough to put down. If you like action-packed crime novels check out Books 1 and 2 of this series and you'll get addicted. I highly recommend Mr Reinhard.
This is a good series. You know who the killer is and who the victims are, and as the story unfolds, you find out why. Harrington and his team are following the murders looking for a connection. The story engages you from page one. Well written and interesting.
This is another good story from E.H. Reinhard. I am really enjoying this series. It is not nearly as gory as the Carl Kane series are. And Lucky is great! Small spoiler alert: I hope we get to find out how Lucky did at the dog trick competition in the next book!
Another E.H. Reinhard thriller mystery. This one concerns a series of murders that take place in Florida during spring break. The killer is out for vengeance. Lots of characters in the police force.
I really enjoy the writing style of this author and this book was no exception. The characters are believable and the story moves so fast, time flies while reading.
Lots of talking by the characters with limited action but the most distracting was the word "sure". I wish I had started counting how many times a character said "sure". So distracting I did not finish the story.
This book was like a poorly done TV police drama. A horrific set of crimes that are quickly solved and an ending to convenient for words. The only plus was that it was a quick read.
This was an okay whodunit about spring breakers who suddenly start getting picked off for no apparent reason. The major suspect is an unknown female caught on a cctv camera. But who is she and why is she knocking off these party guys?
This book kept you on your toes until the end. Lots of twist and turns. Love the main character. Was a little disappointed that we didn't find out what happened to the rapist.
Started at noon and finished at 8:30, with a nap too. Fun book. As much fun as Ben Porter in False Assurances, Threat Bias, Subversive Addiction and Vital Deception!!!
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
4 guys, same tattoo, 1 broken female, 2 years later. Monica had a plan, couldn't fail. Three guys vs 1 female. Kept me reading right through supper. Mr. Reinhard, you spin a great tale, one good enough to miss supper. Thanks.....
