This book is awful.

Antoinette is a spoiled, selfish, shallow, stupid girl. She refused Mr. Perry solely because he was not a Duke. She picked a man who believed wives should stay in the kitchen, not to be seen or heard. She only chose Mr. Perry after he became one. I do not recommend this book. It was a waste of time.

What to do when faced with several suitors? How to choose? Should she marry for love or for money and title? Antoinette Byrd is faced with many decisions once her parents allow her to choose a husband. I so enjoyed Antoinette and the way she worked through her choices. She wants to help her family in her but also years for love in her marriage. This is a delightful sweet story that will keep you turning the pages until the last.

Great story about a young woman's journey in search of a husband. A husband to meet her family's demands and a husband who lets her be herself. Choosing between several suitors is not an easy task.
With this story you get a wonderful insight into the difficult choices young women of a certain social standing were forced to make in Regency England.

"The Lady The Duke and The Gentleman" by Abby Ayles

My Thoughts.....

What a journey this was for Antoinette who was in search of a husband. This was quite a complicated task as Antoinette pickings would have to: "1: keep her at home but support her parents & siblings financially in any way 2. Allow her to travel and study any where she desires but her parents and siblings are kinda on their on and 3. Love her and show her all the love she shows back more than she ever dreamed but can't help or take care of her parents or siblings with their problems." Now, how hard of a task could this be for her to do this? This story really let's us into the insight of just how hard it was during this time in Regency England for the young woman for social standing who had this choice of doing this task. Who will Antoinette choose...a Duke, a Mr. or the Sir? To find out you will just have to pick up "The Lady The Duke and The Gentleman to see!

ONE OF MY NEW FAVORITE FEMALES ANTOINETTE

5 Stars is what I give Abby Ayles, for this delightful new book of a daughter who had to get her Christian parents to realize it was clearly time to be choosing her a husband. I, have fallen in love with our heroine here, Antoinette, she is a delightful mix of loved her parents even though she doesn't see extreme eye to eye on everything and agrees totally with their Christian charity. Her enjoyment of outside exercise and intermingling with others, especially children, has made her certain that she will be different in her home than her mother. She has an older brother who is working in India and a sister, who apparently either lost her mind or her way with religion, with just a little discussed in this book. Now, that leaves us to the juicy part of Antoinette and her suitors for marriage! There are 3 suitors for her hand, first is a Duke, 2nd is a Mr. who isn't rich, and 3'rd a Sir, who will inherit titles & extensive bank accounts. I will borrow a little from the book to make this short & to the point: if she chooses each one the end result would be: 1: keep her at home but support her parents & siblings financially in any way 2. Allow her to travel and study any where she desires but her parents and siblings are kinda on their on and 3. Love her and show her all the love she shows back more than she ever dreamed but can't help or take care of her parents or siblings with their problems. So, what to do? Does she stay with her conscious to marry to be able that her parents, brother, sister & brother-in-law are all cared for in the future yet herself would gradually be killed year by year, or to marry where everything she had thought to ever learn about or travel to she could, however, her family nothing would be given. She just didn't know what to do, because if she sincerely wanted to be happy in her life without thinking about money at all it would be 3. And this choice would be for her soul not for money or her parents! What does she decide? Go, get a copy and read now, or you will miss out on my new favorite Lady, Antoinette! I received an ARC copy to review this book, and this is my honest review. I certainly will be looking for more books from Abby Ayles, to read, and hopefully more with Antoinette in them. I do love Antoinette 's style, except how she ends it up with Lucy!

The Lady The Duke And The Gentleman is a Historical Regency Romance Novel by Abby Ayles.

Antoinette Byrd is looking for a husband. She needs to marry well in order to help her family who desperately need a boost in their finances. She also wants a man who will allow her some independence and not expect her to be the little woman at home only there to cater to his and any children they have needs. Two suitors are at the top of the list, but one has the finances but not the will to let her be independent. The other has both but isn't prepared to help out her family. Then there is one other man, one she can't even entertain as a suitor because he has no title and no money, but he is also the man that she feels the most for. He is the man who it's blatantly obvious to the reader that she should be with.

In the first part of this book I could not stand Antoinette, she came across as such a spoilt, very shallow, immature woman. Her criteria for picking a husband from her suitors really annoyed me at first, she wanted to have her cake and eat it and strung along her main suitors while she ummed and ahhed over which man she should choose. As the book progresses although Antoinette still came across as spoilt, and self-centred, she does mature somewhat and is less unlikable. At one point she nearly redeemed herself in my eyes, and if it weren't for the fact that in getting her happily ever after she gives little thought to those she is hurting she would absolutely have redeemed herself.

At times the writing of this book seemed a little too modern for the time period, but on the whole, the story was a good one and it kept me wanting to read on so that I could find out who Antoinette would finally choose. I wasn't disappointed.

Antoinette has led a pampered, sheltered life, allowed to be herself by her parents but now the time has come for her to act more responsibly and, in fact, to look for a husband. The lead up to the Christmas period is a prime time to attend balls and meet eligible suitors. The problem is Antoinette is a romantic, influenced by the love stories she has read but realises that what she wants and what she ought to do are two very different matters.

We follow her journey of courtship taking in to account the social aspects and aspirations of the culture during the Regency period and the hierarchy involved. She seeks advice when her emotions become muddled from her friends and then becomes influenced by her older, married sister.

Antoinette wants to make the best match but best for who, herself or her family and finds herself in a quandary when she realises her heart wants something different to her head.

Although I enjoyed the story some of the pleasure of reading was diminished by spelling mistakes and typos.

It was also a bit repetitive with the same points made over and over again.

The timeline wasn’t as clear as it could have been, many references were made to the lead up to the Christmas period but with all of the events that happened it must have been several months away before the festivities began.

Antoinette Byrd believes she is mature enough to start seeing suitors. She becomes so confused, is he the right one, does he see the real me, do I see the real him, on it goes. But always at the back of her mind, she thinks of Mr. Perry. Mr. Perry is having a little trouble with his business, It has not failed, but he does not have a lot of money right now. He is a good, caring and gentle man.
Throughout this book, she keeps fretting over all her emotions, fears and definite worries. The descriptions were very good and the dialogue fits the action. The characters were vivid and so true to life. Mr. Perry never gave up on her, it was important to him. The plot was complicated, with indecisive decisions and confusion which, all contributed to her problems. It seemed to me that the way she constantly changed her mind, showed a little immaturity. But it is an easy read and written well. It did keep my attention, it was worth the time to read it and I did enjoyed the book.
I received this ARC free and voluntarily reviewed it.

Stars: 4(out of 5) for overall story
Chilies: 0 (out of 5) for heat between the sheets/or anywhere else

Genre: Historical Romance
Chapters: Introduction + 36 + Epilogue + Extended Epilogue
Ending: No cliffhangers, No cheating, HEA

Review: This is an awesome story about relationships and the choices a person (women mainly) have to make in finding their spouse. Even back in the Regency Era, there were choices similar to the ones we make today. Do we follow popular opinion as to whom we choose? Do we marry for the sake of our family dynamics/financials? Do we follow our hearts and marry the ones we love? Do we settle? All important and challenging questions; the exact questions Antoinette has to answer and the decision isn’t as easy as she would like. Especially since her suitors don’t originally add up to the mental checklist she has from her romance novels.

Add in the family drama with her sister and financial issues…you have one h*ll of a story! I’m happy to say, Antoinette does make a decision that will provide an HEA!!

ARC read in exchange for honest review.

I received an ARC for an honest review from the author. I read around 300 books yearly with the majority of them being in the historical romance genre. Although I don't expect every book to be 100% historically accurate, I do expect them to be somewhat authentic to their time period. This book fell way short with blaring inaccuracies to the point of being annoying. I only finished it because I had signed up to receive the ARC. The story was slow and I found I just wanted it to end. The only character I liked was Mr. Perry. If you are new to historical romance genre or don't care about period accuracy, you might still enjoy this book. It just wasn't up to the books I normally read.

I loved this regency romance with great characters, romance and intrigue. She was a young woman that decided it was time for her to find a husband. Her parents were not really for it since she was loud and more forward than most ladies of her rank. However, she finally talked them into letting her meet some eligible men. One was a duke, one was knight who pretended to be rich, and one was a family friend who wasn't rich or powerful. She found things she liked in each one, but after finally getting engaged to the duke, she realized she loved the poor one. Things were complicated, but they finally got their HEA. I enjoy all the books from this author and can't wait for her next one.

This is a first-rate Regency novel, even better than her first, "The Duke's Secrets." Abby has done a wonderful job with this story, clearly getting across the young girl mindset of our heroine, so she is pulling some rather dangerous stunts for her reputation and status, but she is a young, untried girl who hasn't had to really think for herself. She has to learn to grow and mature quickly to make some important decisions that will affect her future and others as well.

I strongly recommend reading Abby's novels--each is a standalone, but they read better in order. If you love Regency romances, these stories, this author, will be wonderful additions to your library!

A story with twists and turns, with deeper meanings than what you would have expected at first
At first I thought that the heroine is a silly, vapid girl, interested only in having a good time, marrying for prestige etc. But as the story evolves, we see that although she's immature, there is a reason why she pursues a wealthy husband. The whole story is full of twists and turns, making you reconsider your opinion of the heroine. It's the story of a young girl with girlish dreams who has to grow up fast and make choices that will save her family from financial ruin. *I received an ARC from the author and this is my voluntary and honest opinion*

Twisted love

Antoinette and Duke Perry were meant to be. The storyline was great. Each character brought something exciting and different to the story. The climax was when Antoinette was willing to sacrifice her happiness by marrying Duke Godwin even though she was in love with Mr. Perry, aka: Duke Perry of Devonshire. The finality of the story is where everything came together. Antoinette found her love with Duke Perry and lived a happy life with him and her new addition that was on the way.

Love Will Always Triumph!

I liked this book very much. Very rarely do I not know how the story will play out, but this book kept me guessing until the very end. I loved the characters and couldn’t put the story down until I’d read the extended epilogue. Even then, I wanted to know more about the stories of other characters. I see the potential for other books in this, characters whose “happily ever after” still needs to be told. (Ie: Lucy, and the Suitors who were not chosen)

This is a sometimes ridiculous, sometimes romantic, sometimes irritating story, the characters are confounding, odd and harsh, the storyline drags on a bit too long, BUT it's interesting and engrossing. The end was a little shocking and sad, but much better than I had anticipated. I really like Mr. Perry, he is charming and sweet. Antoinette is young, naive and unable to think for herself. Duke Godwin is impossible to figure out. So it's not a bad story, it's just a bit much.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

Good sweet romantic story

The Lady The Duke And The Gentleman was such good story about a sweet and innocent lady trying to make a huge decision. I could barely wait to see what decision she made. She was so loyal and trying to please everyone but herself. One man was so perfect for her, and I liked him so much. The only criticism I would have, such a small thing, is they called everyone by title, never first name, like Duke something, even in end. I would highly recommend this book to everyone that likes such a sweet story and characters.

Antionette Byrd was being presented to suitors for marriage.
Duke Alexander Godwin was very wealthy and could benefit not only her, but provide for the family.
Sir Dodge, was well off, but something was amiss about him.
Mr. Perry was a business associate of her fathers and was thrown in to give variety.
But of all her suitors one stands out but she feels pressured to make the right choice. Does she please her
family or follow her heart.
This is a great historical romance, and I would recommend it.

If you love awesomely clean romance novels then you will love this. I received this book as an ARC and was very honored to be trusted by Abby to review her first ever published book. The characters are charming, loyal to family and funny. Antoinette’s struggles with her choice of a marriage partner is so realistic and reminds us of the depth of character that the author has built. There are breathtaking cliffhangers until the very end of the story. You will not regret buying this book.

The choices, the choices, how is she to decide?

The choices were multiple. I knew who she should choose early on in the book, but the choices were made more difficult for her because of the rank and circumstances of her family. So glad it finally all worked out but wow, what a lot of complications there were in that time period! I'm glad I did not have to go through all of that when I found my true love!
Very entertaining and true to the period.

Antoinette has a hard time with trying to figure out what she wants in a husband. She casts Mr. Perry out right away because she knows she needs to marry well and Mr. Perry doesn't have much to offer. It may seem cruel but it is the way things were done back then. And Mr. Perry understand that though he still wanted to be with Antoinette. Then when Antoinette found out about her family's financial problems she knew the Duke Godwin was the one she had to marry. Are so she thought. Great story.

Loved it

Although I thought it was a little slow to start. this is an amazing book. I loved that she always thought for her self and made up her own mind. I thought the Duke was self centered and callous. The gentleman was who I was really cheering for. Not going to spoil it for anyone. But lots of twist that I like.

I loved the turmoil of the main character as she tries to find a husband who will accept her for herself. This journey is fraught with many difficulties including hurting other people and deciding who’s views to trust in the quest for a husband. This is a lively wonderful tale fraught with family problems making her decision even harder. It is a wonderful read, thoroughly enjoyable.

"The Lady The Duke And The Gentleman: A Historical Romance Novel" by Abby Ayles is a book about a young woman who is in search of a husband. She feels she knows who she wants as her husband but her family has another opinion on the matter. I haven't read a Historical romance in a very long time, and I enjoyed reading this story.

A little research would have helped!

Far too many historical errors! I didn't connect with any of the characters and found it difficult to continue reading with so many grating inaccuracies! Two stars because this is a new author...hopefully Ms. Ayles will do her research before her next book. Sorry.

I absolutely loved this book! It is a sweet and clean historical romance and is very well written. I was taken in by the story right away and couldn’t put the book down. I won’t spoil the story but will say that she ends up with the man I was rooting for all along! It’s a great feel-good story and well worth the read.

Trying to do the right thing

During the life of this young lady and the thing she went through to pick her husband and the trial she is going though from her family and her friends, she has to pick the right man for her family and to be there for her so I give this story a four star rating.

I chose to read and review this book. I enjoyed this book but felt there was something off or missing in it. I mean I did enjoy Antoinette's character with her many suitors. But I felt there was something in her character that was snot right or fair towards the other characters both main and second. Still, a sweet book with some suspense emotions need for advice and decision making

not a fan

Not a fan of this story. The heroine Antoinette, was said to be so self sacrificing etc. but I personally felt she was very selfish and very fickle and played with everyone’s feel from her suitors to her friend Lucy. A lot of this story really just bounces around and did not make a lot of sense

Absolute delight

The story had a great story line and good Christian values. But the main character at times seemed a little vain and self centered. Though I don't think she did this out of maliousness others were deeply hurt. All in all it was a entertaining story.
