As a transgender person and an advocate and friend to many other transgender people, I've read a lot of trans-specific books and THIS IS THE BEST ONE. If you have trans people in your life, read this. If you would like to have trans people in your life, read this. If you're a teacher, a librarian, a community or religious leader, a health care provider...read this, and then buy some extra copies for your colleagues and community members.
Also, a shout-out to the illustrator, Kai Hofius, who did a magnificent job with the artwork!!
Really solid above-101 level guide to unlearning cisheteronormative thinking and supporting trans inclusion. As a gender studies instructor I've read quite a lot of texts that focus on allyship with trans communities and this is definitely one of the best. I particularly appreciate Shlasko's attention to complexity: different people use the same identity terminology in very different ways, understand gender itself in vastly different ways, and want different things in an ally, and none of that feels oversimplified in this book. Definitely recommend.
I really appreciated Shlasko’s very straightforward yet compassionate writing style. I felt like this book was very informative, but not just an info dump. The activities that make this an actual workbook really got me to consider why I think about gender the way I do, and I found some of them very helpful in establishing techniques for remembering and honoring other peoples pronouns. I definitely recommend this book if you have trans people in your life or if you just want to aspire to allyship.
Read for church work. This book was recommended for our church as we work to be more Trans and Non-binary affirming and welcoming. The slim book is an excellent handbook on Trans inclusion and welcome. I liked the friendly style it was written in and there are nice drawings and visuals included throughout. Definitely recommend for allies!
I really liked this book and it's a great teaching tool with fantastic suggestions for other readings in there (and giving credit to resources). I'm pulling together a reading list of beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of understanding and this I labeled intermediate.
I've read many books this year in search of a good resource to provide friends and family who have questions or who are just trying to be more supportive. This is my favorite. Accessible, detailed, but also a direct and quick read.
I often reference this in educational work. It has been beyond useful for engaging with cisgender people and explaining transgender experience to them in a way that is easily digestible while also not oversimplifying.
Very inspiring and useful. Read through once getting a lot of insight. Plan to read through many times to gain more reflection and practice, hopefully with a study group!
Learned about this book from Our Lives Magazine. How could I not rate it highly when I learned so much from it? I will be passing on to others to read.
A worthwhile primer to being a better ally to transgender people. Not all inclusive, but a good intro. Gave resources at the end for other trans-related topics.
I’m a therapist who specializes in lgbtq+ and I read this book to screen if I would recommend it (or not) to someone as a resource.
Answer: I definitely would. This is an impressive introduction for anyone who wants to be a supportive trans ally. I appreciated how the author didn’t just present suggestions, but also explained things in a way that’s both validating for trans people and accessible for people who are entirely new to the subject.
Big thumbs up on this one. I’d recommend this to family, friends, coworkers, anybody who intends to work on their allyship.
