Jesse McDermitt Caribbean Adventure #11

Rising Storm: A Jesse McDermitt Novel

Rate this book
Miles from the laid-back lifestyle of No Name Key, and just shy of the raucous nightlife of Miami and South Beach, lies Coconut Grove, a tropical oasis with a distinct Bohemian flair. Lately, a seedy underside has emerged along the Grove's waterfront, preying on adventurous young women. Somewhere amid all the glitz and glamour, hides a thief who stole a fortune in Aztec emeralds. Or did he? Jesse McDermitt must first determine if the victim herself is a thief. The trail of clues leads him to evidence that the thief may be involved in a string of more heinous crimes. Jesse and Chyrel enlist the help of the recently returned Charity, and the trio go "undercover" at a floating swinger's party headed for the Bahamas, which may well be a front for torture and murder. When a sudden violent storm strikes Stiltsville, Jesse finds himself alone on the ocean, trying to recover the treasure and put a murderer behind bars-but first he must win the battle with Mother Nature.

A young lady comes to Jesse with a story about stolen emeralds. Even though he realizes this is the plot of John D. MacDonald novel, he decides to find them.

Turns out they were stolen by a couple that are not only human traffickers, they're serial killers!

The killers are a lot like the killers in All His Father's Sins, a true crime book I read a couple of weeks ago. That coincidence made the book more interesting than it might be.

another entertaining entry in the series.

AC-D.C....Really?

As usual, Wayne has produced another edge of the seat thriller. However, from my perspective, the book was a little " long on character details" and a little short on "knock down, drag 'm out" action...BUT it was a good way to bring Charity back for this tale and leave the door open for her to join future adventures. Personally, I didn't need the AC-DC side issue which was irrelevant to the overall theme...the emphasis could have been placed elsewhere. Read it in two sittings and I'm looking forward to Book 12.

The story develops fairly slowly, but it flows quite well and it was nice to have Charity back. However, the author seemed obsessed with sex and every other page was Jessie either lusting after various women or worrying about lusting after them.
The ‘case’ they are working on starts well, but as things progressed I found it difficult to understand what they were doing. They could have taken out Carmichael so easily, but instead they came up with a ridiculous plan to join him on his boat where they were obviously going to be at a big disadvantage.
The problem with this, is that it is so unbelievable, their group consists of ex CIA agents, police, secret service, navy seals etc. How could they come up with this plan?

This was an OK story, not particularly exciting, but quite easy to read and I would have given at least 3 stars, but for the ludicrous plan.

Just the best.....

Love reading about Jesse and Charity. Seems like a long time between books, Wayne Stinnett. Wish you could churn them out a little faster. Guess I'll just have to wait like all the other Jesse groupies out there. I thought Jesse and Devon would have had a serious talk about her possible bi activity. He seemed a little upset about what Charity mentioned in this book. Thanks, Amarillo Turtle

My favorite so far.

The author was spending less time trying to develop the interplay between characters. This deep in the series he doesn't have to rehash how the main characters relate, although there's still some of that. The plot was familiar, a few different twists from other books in the series, but enjoyable. It felt more like this was written to satisfy the author and less to put a workmanlike commercial seller on the board.

Jesse is still sexually charged, romantically unlucky and it still comes across like it was written in after the fact. If so, then there's too much time spent away from the story. If not, I'm red-blooded, American, early 50's and male so I'm not against rooting for him to get lucky, either. But he can't keep missing the boat (pun intended, as you'll read in a second)!

The ending sucked...out loud. Which was planned, and very well, too. As the style of the books has matured, the characters have grown, become a little more complex and interesting. They start to grab you in this book and you want to really see what happens because it's starting to come together. So the good guys get hurt some, the bad guys died a lot and Jesse may have another daughter he never knew about. Still with me? She's younger than the other two by a bunch, mom was very much who you'd expect Jesse to end up really making a relationship work with and at the end... Buy the next book! Stinnett, you done good... I laughed .. But you're a scoundrel nonetheless!

I have read all of the author's prior books and after reading, 'Rising Storm', I have to admit that it's not up to the same level of those earlier stories written by Wayne. This story gathers most of his characters from earlier books and has them working together to uncover some missing emeralds that may or may not have been stolen from a friend of a friend. However, most everyone has only bit parts as compared to Charity and Jesse, who seem to be the main characters here.

The perceived thief is quickly located, Jesse and Charity pose as treasure hunters and go undercover in hopes of locating the precious gems. Quite a few pages are dedicated to bisexual lifestyles, wife swapping, and orgies which Charity and Chryl play to the fullest - teasing Jesse non-stop. They soon discover that this couple may have lured others to participant in their orgies then afterward, tortured and killed them, dumping the bodies into the ocean; young women have been reported missing from the Miami and South Beach area.

A trap was set and Jesse's team had a plan. However, a sudden storm appears in the Bay en route to their destination and the thief strikes first, incapacitating all the guests on the boat and crushing their plan. Death is just a whisper away...they've all disappeared from the radar and separated from any backup. Is this finally the end for Jesse McDermitt, Charity and Chryl? Still, an okay book to continue the series...just not as engaging as the rest.

I really liked this book

I've read all of Wayne's books, except the Charity series 2 & 3, and I would five stars to the entire series. The best thing I can say about them is that next month I'm going to start reading the whole series again, so I can experience again Jesse's feeling of getting out of the Corps and having the world of possibilities ahead of you, common to that particular new found freedom. I was an Army helicopter pilot, slash medic, slash operating room specialist (91D), who, at the end, went from being an Aero Scout (7th, then 10th, Air CAV Squadrons) to flying MEDEVAC out of Ft. Ord, California. I only give a little of my history so, that when I say how much I appreciate the care and attention to detail that Wayne takes in his approach to telling a story, only makes that story all the better. Years ago, I even wrote down a few experiences I went through. Mostly as an experiment to see if I could do a better job than some hack author, whose first and only book I had just stopped reading because it didn't hold my attention. Then it just became a hobby of mine, writing. Not good enough for publication, but it gave me a whole new appreciation for those authors who got published...even the hacks.
Anyway, I digress. I really do love Wayne's books. He's developed a bunch of characters that I truly believe I could become friends with, or the main character in my stories could become friends with, or dare I say, co-operators with.

Stinnett still feels the need to tell us a boat goes up on plane every time someone increases the speed of the boat. He doesn’t do it quite as often in this book (11 times) as he did in prior ones – but that’s only because Jesse and the others spend more time on airplanes here than on boats.

He still, too, has so many characters with similar names – many starting with C or J – that it’s still hard to keep them straight. The prime example here is Charity and Chyrel, the two main female characters, who are often ‘on-stage’ together.

Those gripes aside, this is one of the better stories in this series. Jesse offers to help a veteran’s widow recover something stolen from her, a quest that leads to uncovering a couple kidnapping and killing young women.

There is tension throughout the book, whether it’s Jesse dealing with the amorous come-ons of three women (although Stinnett has him spending too much time thinking about this) or the final face-off between the good guys and the bad.

I have the feeling this book is the first in a major shift in what Jesse and his friends do.

So, I’ll be back for the next one to see where he takes them.

Travis McGhee was Wayne Stinnett's Hero Too.

I discovered Travis McGhee when I was about 10 or 11 years old, and, Thanks to my Maternal Grandmother, I eventually read them All. Grandma Vice worked in a big Indianapolis Drug Store, one with a big magazine and paperback section, so I got every John D McDonald novel as they came out.
This is the last Jesse McDermott Novel thus far, and I've thoroughly enjoyed Every single one. This one though, has to be my Favorite, because it's an Ode, or Homage to old Travis McGhee, and based on one of the best of that Saga.
These Characters and Stories in the Caribbean Adventures of Jesse and associates, are great books, even if you never heard of Travis or his famous Boat, " The Busted Flush" .

Stinnett borrowed heavily from John D McDonald's Deep Blue Goodbye when writing this one. He gave a lot of credit to McDonald and Travis McGee in the preface.

Very good tale of McDermitt working for an army widow to recover what was taken from her and unborn child.

For those who follow this series, Charity makes an appearance and is very much a part of the story.

Those looking for a fun series to read, I highly recommend the Stinnett/McDermitt offerings. Good action in the Florida Keys and surrounding area. Lots of boat, fishing and even a bit of airplane porn to keep the reader interested.

Only one flaw, IT'S TOO SHORT!

As a HUGE fan of Wayne Stinnett's work of course I think that "RISING STORM" is another great story. The characters Wayne created are loveable hero's and despicable villans acting out the story in a beautiful part of the world full of interesting places and people. The storyline takes just enough twists and turns to keep you turning pages longer than you should! And I must say that I especially enjoyed the ending. Thank you once again Mr. Stinnett!

The Caribbean Counterterrorist Command has been disbanded, and Jesse and the gang are doing contract "security" work now. Through the daughter of a deceased friend of his, Jesse learns of the pregnant young widow of an Army officer who has been robbed of a "treasure" her husband acquired through various bartering transactions. This is enough information for the gang to don their shining armor and change to the rescue.

Jesse to the rescue!

Another good read about Jesse & his connected friends. Nice to see Charity back in this book. A feel good novel that always let the good guys win. Starts with a simple request & develops into another great mystery. Love the bond & continued loyalty for those who serve our country. Hope to see more of Jesse & his friends in another novel in the near future.

'Rising Storm' was a great and insightful book that held my attention throughout. The storyline was pretty eventful. I loved that the whole team was back together, even if it's for a short time. Jesse playing the role he did in this book was quite funny. I loved that Charity and Chyral pretty much rendered Jesse speechless quite a few times. It gave me, sort of, an inside look at what makes these women tick. I look forward to the next book. A great add to your tbr list. Recommended read.

Never Disappointed

I have read every book in both the Fallen series and the Charity Styles series. I'm happy to find out that the Rising series is continuing the adventures of Jesse, Deuce, and the rest of the gang. All the books are a joy to read. But there is one problem...they are all just too hard to put down! Looking forward to the next one. And the next and the next.......

The Sexy One

Ol’ Jesse has his hands full with three sexy women in his life…which finds him taking a lot of cold showers. Definitely Stinnett’s sexiest novel so far. Good story my only complaint is…Stinnett will take paragraphs or chapter to describe a boat, plane or gun…comes to the finale he wraps it up in a paragraph…guys stormed the house guy was captured? We want to see the action, the take down! Common Wayne one more chapter won’t hurt!

Another Great Read

Wayne Sennet is is a great story teller. His characters are not super heroes but are capable of performing amazing feats. Keep telling stories like this and people will keep you writing for a long time to come.

The attraction between Charity and Devon could prove interesting.

"An Interesting Treasure Hunt"

Here in the Florida Keys, Coconut Grove is a tropical oasis. However, there is a hunter preying on young women. There's also a thief who stole a fortune of emeralds from a newly widowed pregnant woman. Jesse McDermitt takes to the trail along with Chyrel while facing a dangerous sea storm. Exciting to read to the very end.

LOL during this one!

Will Jesse EVER figure women out? LOL He has 3 of them totally confusing him this time. But, wait! This is supposed to be an action/mystery... Well, it is that, as Jesse tries to help a friend of a friend. It turns into quite the adventure involving the newly formed 'team'. I loved the novel way they turned the bad guy over to the proper authorities.

good book…but could have missed the weird sex lives of everyone

A fast paced intriguing book…just to much weird sexual information. I could have gone without any of that! Just following the missing emeralds would have been enough! Yuck! Missed something at the end…the takedown of Wilson. Hm being shot just wasn’t enough!

Wonderful

Love the way that the author gives us a look at what will come of this group now that they are retired. I sat down and read it in one day. Couldn't put it down! Another chapter has opened!

Another good turn leads to a great adventure.

The whole crew comes back together in an adventure involving "lifestyle" serial killers. The story line is classic Jesse McDermitt. I have been yearning for another story from the ( pen? ) of Wayne Stinnett. Always a good read.

I enjoyed this latest installment in the Jesse McDermitt series. I liked that everyone was in the story, Of course they did not have very big parts which was not good.
This story was a mix of Jesse and Charity. Another character the author writes about.

Another good read, hope these never end

They seem to have more of a beginning lately and more of an end, use to be you wondered what happened, now it gets tied up, instead of wondering in future novels whether more will appear, Thanks Mr Stinnett for giving us more.

Getting Better!

As Stinnett continues, the books have sexual activity with unnecessary details that add nothing of value. With that exception, the books improve as he writes each book.

I really liked the first 85% of this story but I was a little disappointed in the ending. As seems to be in a lot of stories lately the main character (Jessie) gets totally overwhelmed at the end for no reason.

A little different story in that Charity and Jesse were the main characters and everyone else we know from previous stories supported them in minor roles. Still a great read and gripping story. I never want to put Wayne's stories down until I finish and I often lose sleep to finish.
