Μυστήριο, ποδόσφαιρο κι ωραία εξωτικά μέρη. Τι άλλο να ζητήσει κανείς;

Ο Σκοτ Μάνσον είναι πλέον παρελθόν για τη Λόντον Σίτι. Έχει αναγκαστεί να εγκαταλείψει την ομάδα που προπονεί τον τελευταίο καιρό και αγαπάει τόσο πολύ. Για την ακρίβεια πρέπει να εγκαταλείψει την Αγγλία, οπότε και θα σκεφτεί πολύ σοβαρά την πρόταση που του γίνεται να μετακινηθεί στη Σανγκάη. Όμως τα πράγματα στο χώρο του ποδοσφαίρου και δη του διεθνούς ποδοσφαίρου δεν είναι απλά και ρόδινα. Η πρόταση που του κάνουν από τη Μπαρτσελόνα δεν είναι για να αναλάβει προπονητής, αλλά σχετίζεται με διαφορετικό τρόπο με τις προπονητικές του ικανότητες. Θα τον βοηθήσουν στο ρόλο του ντετέκτιβ που ψάχνει να βρει το χαμένο αστέρι της ομάδας!

Άλλης πρότασης απούσης, ο Μάνσον θα δεχτεί τη δουλειά και θα προσπαθήσει να ακολουθήσει τα ίχνη του παίχτη, από το Παρίσι μέχρι την Αντίγκουα και τη Γουαδελούπη. Στο δρόμο του θα συναντήσει τα πάντα, από νέα ταλέντα μέχρι διεφθαρμένους άντρες και πανέμορφες γυναίκες.

Η γραφή του Kerr είναι εκεί, πανταχού παρούσα σε όλο το βιβλίο. Όσοι τον γνωρίζουν από τα βιβλία με πρωταγωνιστή τον Μπέρνι Γκούντερ, θα τον αναγνωρίσουν στις σελίδες και αυτού του βιβλίου. Αυτή τη φορά ο ήρωας δεν είναι ντετέκτιβ αλλά προπονητής ποδοσφαίρου που όμως καλείται να παίξει το ρόλο του ντετέκτιβ. Όσοι δεν ξέρουν και πολλά από ποδόσφαιρο, είναι μια καλή ευκαιρία να μάθουν. Όχι τόσο τους κανόνες του παιχνιδιού, αλλά περισσότερο τις ομάδες που κυριαρχούν, τους κορυφαίους παίχτες και τις αδυναμίες τους.

Ο συγγραφέας δίνει μια εικόνα του χώρου του ποδοσφαίρου που δεν είναι και πολύ ρόδινη. Παίχτες που ζουν μια έξαλλη ζωή καθώς οι εβδομαδιαίες απολαβές τους είναι πολλαπλάσιες των ετήσιων ή διετών απολαβών ενός μέσου Έλληνα. Ακριβά αυτοκίνητα, σπίτια που βγαίνουν από περιοδικά αρχιτεκτονικής και διακόσμησης, εξαρτήσεις και πανέμορφες και εύκολες γυναίκες παντού. Νεαρά αγόρια που διαπρέπουν στη μπάλα αλλά χάνουν τη “μπάλα” από την τρομερή και απίστευτη αλλαγή στη ζωή τους. Είναι σίγουρα δύσκολο κάποιος να διαχειριστεί την τόσο μεγάλη δημοσιότητα τόσο γρήγορα, αλλά αυτό δεν είναι κάτι που τα δικαιολογεί όλα!

Το ξεκίνησα κανα μήνα πριν,το πήγα χαλαρά μέχρι τη στιγμή που έγινε γνωστό οτι πέθανε ο Kerr,αυτός ο μεγάλος Σκωτσέζος που τόσα υπέροχα βιβλια μας χάρισε.Από τοτε αγχώθηκα,σχεδόν μετρούσα κάθε λέξη που διάβαζα.Anyway το βιβλιαράκι ειναι καλό,διαβάζεται πολύ εύκολα και ειδικά όσοι φίλοι έχουν μια μικρή σχέση με το ποδοςφαιρο θα το λατρέψουν.Καλό ταξιδι Philip Kerr:(

Ο δεύτερος -μετά τον Μπέρνι Γκούντερ- αγαπημένος ήρωας των αναγνωστών του Philip Kerr, Σκοτ Μάνσον, επιστρέφει με μια ακόμα περιπέτεια στο τρίτο βιβλίο της σειράς, με τίτλο «Ψεύτικο εννιάρι».

Μετά τα όσα συνέβησαν στο τέλος του προηγούμενου βιβλίου, η παραμονή του Σκοτ στον πάγκο της Λόντον Σίτυ ως προπονητής φαντάζει απλά αδύνατη, και ο ίδιος αναγκάζεται να φύγει από το Λονδίνο. Όμως το να βρει νέα θέση εργασίας δεν είναι τόσο εύκολο· επιπλέον, βρίσκεται στο στόχαστρο των οπαδών της Λόντον Σίτυ, που δεν χάνουν ευκαιρία να του επιτεθούν μέσω των social media. Το μέλλον του φαντάζει αβέβαιο, κάτι που του προκαλεί τεράστιο εκνευρισμό.
Μετά από μια αποτυχημένη απόπειρα να δουλέψει στη Σανγκάη, δέχεται ένα τηλεφώνημα από έναν παλιό του φίλο στη Μπαρτσελόνα. Βέβαια, οι Καταλανοί δεν τον χρειάζονται ως προπονητή· αυτό που θέλουν είναι οι υπηρεσίες του ως ντετέκτιβ! Το νέο μεγάλο αστέρι της ομάδας έχει εξαφανιστεί από προσώπου γης και πρέπει να βρεθεί το γρηγορότερο. Οι ικανότητες του Σκοτ ως αυτού που μπορεί να λύσει ακόμα και τον πιο περίεργο γρίφο έχουν διαρρεύσει στον κόσμο του ποδοσφαίρου και τώρα φαίνεται πως μόνο αυτός είναι ικανός να τους βοηθήσει.
Ο Σκοτ θα δεχτεί περισσότερο επειδή νιώθει πως τους χρωστάει, μιας και τον είχαν βοηθήσει κάποτε σε μια δύσκολη στιγμή της ζωής του, παρά για τα χρήματα. Έτσι ξεκινάει ένα συναρπαστικό ταξίδι από τη Γαλλία μέχρι ένα μικρό νησάκι της Καραϊβικής, απ’ όπου κατάγεται ο Ζερόμ Ντιμά. Έχει στη διάθεσή του έναν μήνα για να τον βρει και, παρόλο που ο ίδιος γκρινιάζει συνεχώς πως η δουλειά του είναι να προπονεί μια ομάδα κι όχι να ψάχνει χαμένους παίκτες, απολαμβάνει ολοφάνερα τον ρόλο του ντετέκτιβ. Ο χρόνος κυλάει αντίστροφα κι ο Σκοτ θα πρέπει, για μια ακόμα φορά, να αποδείξει πως η σπουδαία φήμη του δεν βασίζεται καθόλου σε φήμες…

Το βιβλίο αυτό διαφέρει αρκετά από τα δύο προηγούμενα της σειράς, με την πολύ καλή έννοια. Ο κόσμος του ποδοσφαίρου και ο παλμός που δονεί όλα όσα σχετίζονται με τη στρογγυλή θεά -από τους μεγαλομετόχους μιας ομάδας μέχρι τον απόηχο του κάθε αγώνα- παραμένει βέβαια το κυρίως μοτίβο. Όμως αυτή τη φορά ο Μάνσον, ‘απαλλαγμένος’ από τα… γηπεδικά του καθήκοντα, μπορεί να ξεδιπλώσει το εκρηκτικό του ταμπεραμέντο και τον ιδιαίτερο χαρακτήρα του με πολλούς και διαφορετικούς τρόπους. Για πρώτη φορά, η ιδιότητά του ως ντετέκτιβ επισκιάζει εκείνη του προπονητή. Και αποδεικνύεται ξανά εξίσου καλός και σ’ αυτόν τον ρόλο.
Ένα ακόμη ιδιαίτερο χαρακτηριστικό αυτού του βιβλίου είναι η ταξιδιάρικη ατμόσφαιρα που αποπνέουν οι σελίδες του. Ο Σκοτ ταξιδεύει από την Αγγλία στην Κίνα, από κει στην Ισπανία και τη Γαλλία και φτάνει ως ένα απομονωμένο νησάκι της Καραϊβικής, προκειμένου να ανακαλύψει το ‘εννιάρι’ του. Συνεπώς, ο Kerr έχει τη δυνατότητα να μεγαλουργήσει, με τον τρόπο που μόνο αυτός ξέρει, σε ό,τι αφορά τις περιγραφές των τοπίων και να μεταφέρει κυριολεκτικά τον αναγνώστη σε όποιο σημείο του πλανήτη επιλέξει να στείλει κάθε φορά τον ήρωά του. Κι όλα αυτά χωρίς η γραφή του να χάνει στο ελάχιστο το ποδοσφαιρικό άρωμα, που μοιραία ακολουθεί τον Σκοτ όπου κι αν πάει, αφού αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι του εαυτού του. Γιατί ο Σκοτ Μάνσον είναι πάντα και πάνω απ’ όλα προπονητής.
Εξαιρετικά και τα ψυχογραφήματα των χαρακτήρων του βιβλίου, ειδικά του Ζερόμ Ντιμά, του παίκτη που καλείται να βρει ο Μάνσον και να τον επιστρέψει στην Ισπανία. Είναι ένας 100% φανταστικός χαρακτήρας, φυσικά, αλλά στο πρόσωπό του αποτυπώνονται τα χαρακτηριστικά όλων των παικτών οποιασδήποτε ομάδας – από τους πιο διάσημους μέχρι τους ‘μόνιμους’ των πάγκων. Το πάθος για το παιχνίδι, ο αγώνας για τη νίκη, η θέληση για την πρόκριση, ο πόθος για τα χρήματα και τη δόξα, ο μόνιμος φόβος για το πέρασμα του χρόνου ή για έναν απρόσμενο τραυματισμό που θα ανακόψει μια πετυχημένη καριέρα, η πίεση απ’ όλους και απ’ όλα ώστε το κοινό να βλέπει πάντα την καλύτερή σου εικόνα… Όλα αυτά, και ακόμα περισσότερα, στηλιτεύονται από την πένα του Kerr και παρουσιάζουν μιαν άλλη, λιγότερο λαμπερή πλευρά του κόσμου του ποδοσφαίρου· μια πλευρά που απαιτεί συνεχή αγώνα, ιδρώτα, κόπο και στερήσεις, προκειμένου να διατηρήσει κανείς τη θέση και τα όποια κεκτημένα του. Σίγουρα, αν κάποιος διάσημος -ή όχι τόσο διάσημος- ποδοσφαιριστής διαβάσει το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο, θα νιώσει να ταυτίζεται σε πολλά σημεία κι ο ίδιος. Είναι ένα ακόμα ταλέντο του Kerr αυτό· να δημιουργεί χαρακτήρες ανθρώπινους, με τους οποίους νιώθεις να ταυτίζεσαι ή φτάνεις σε κάποιο σημείο να τους κατανοείς.
Τo ταξίδι στο οποίο μας προσκαλεί για ακόμη μία φορά ο συγγραφέας και ο ήρωάς του είναι πολύ δελεαστικό για να καταφέρει να το αρνηθεί οποιοσδήποτε αρέσκεται στην καλή αστυνομική λογοτεχνία -ή στην καλή λογοτεχνία, γενικότερα- αφού η πένα του Philip Kerr εγγυάται κάθε φορά ένα συναρπαστικό, καλογραμμένο αποτέλεσμα.

I’m a big football fan and a thriller about football immediately appealed to me. This is Philip Kerr’s third Scott Manson novel after January Window and Hand of God, but it happily stands alone and I enjoyed the story without having read the first two. In False Nine, Premier League football manager Scott Manson turns detective for Barcelona FC, as he takes a job to track down a missing star player and has a month to do it in. It makes for good story and there is plenty of name dropping with regular mentions of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo among other famous players and managers which added to the interest. From early in the book the language is a bit ‘laddish’ whilst being black Scott gets some racially slanted messages from fans. If this doesn’t offend then I think you will find it a good and interesting read which will, of course, be appreciated more by fans of football with their knowledge of the sport and personalities.

The story begins with Scott who is a football manager recently out of a work after leaving London Premier League side London City. His first attempt at new job leads him to Shanghai where he finds himself the centre of a scam engineered by rivals of the team he was to join. The next opportunity is from Barcelona where he offered a huge fee to play detective and find a star player who has gone absent without leave. He accepts and follows the trail from Paris to Antigua meeting attractive women along the way while enjoying life care of Barcelona’s expense account. It gives an insight into the how football players live and what fantastic amounts of money the game of football can generate. Philip Kerr weaves an interesting story along with some likeable characters. A good read overall and I’d be interested in reading the earlier books if time allows.

Dunya futbol piyasasi hakkinda bu kadar cok bilgi veren, Premier Leage'i bambaska gozle degerlendirmenizi saglayan cok basarili kitaplar. Ucuncu kitap bence uc kitabin en iyisi. Etik degerlerin paraya yenik dustugu bir dunyada Scott Manson'in aldigi kararlar Philip Kerr'in buyuk ozlemini simgeliyor bence.

Kitabi bitirdigimde en buyuk uzuntum Mart 2018'de olen Kerr'in bu kitabin devamini yazamayacagi oldu. Scott Manson'in yeni macerasini okumayi cok isterdim.

Polisiye okuma niyetiyle başladığım serinin son kitabı, polisiye unsurların büyük bölümünü içermese de bıraktığı duygularla günümüzün ışıltılı futbol dünyasının karanlık ve tehlikeli köşelerine odaklanan dört dörtlük bir roman olarak aklımda kalacak. Lo siento pero con lo MACHISTA que es este libro ni si quiera puedo valorar su trama (floja, por cierto). Menos mal que es un libro de la biblioteca y no comprado. Un libro ambientado en el fútbol centrado en la desaparición de una estrella futbolista. Escrita por un señor que lo único que hace es hacer comentarios sexistas y querer acostarse con todas las mujeres que se le ponen delante, me ha dado vergüenza, al final cada día de una forma u otra (periodista deportiva dedicad al fútbol femenino), tengo que tragar con cosas como estas. Sin ir más lejos ayer preguntándole un señor a la ganadora del Balón de Oro que a ver si perreaba. En fin, que me voy por las ramas. Libro de un señoro para otros señoros. Ejemplo de algunas frases:

"Siempre he pensado que a las mujeres preciosas se les puede perdonar un nivel de ignorancia prácticamente total".


"-No me malinterprete, me gusta el metro, pero una mujer como yo en Sevran... sería como pedir que me hicieran algo.
-Es que, con un vestido así, hasta a mí se me ha pasado por la cabeza hacerle algo".


"-¿Qué tipo de abogada es?
-De las que están muy buenas".


Entre medio, se justifica diciendo que no le parece bien que el Mundial de 2022 se celebre en Qatar por cómo tratan a las mujeres, porque le gustan las mujeres. Valiente ironía, lo que le gusta es tirárselas y tratarlas como muñecas.

"-¿Me pagarás el vuelo a Londres para la vista?
-Siempre y cuando follemos de nuevo".

"Era una joven bastante atractiva -siempre que te gusten las mujeres vestidas de fubolista-".

Señor no es que se vista de futbolista, ES QUE ES FUTBOLISTA.


Y el libro termina literalmente así:

"No me hagas esperar, porque estoy con la maldición y, cuando estoy con la maldición, me pongo muy irritable si no consigo lo que quiero".

La maldición. Nad que añadir, señoría.

La referencia, constante, a futbolistas me ha hecho que no entendiera algunas de las cosas que explicaba el protagonista. Para explicar cualquier cosa ponía como ejemplo lo que hizo tal o cual futbolista, o estas muy metida en el futbol internacional o te pierdes. Para seguir la trama de suspense, que a mi me ha parecido flojita, no tiene importancia no entender esas referencias futbolísticas.

Eso si, el libro destila un poco de rancio maschismo. Todas las chicas eran muy guapas, daba igual que fueran abogadas, representantes o modelos, lo primero que te describía el autor era lo hermosa que eran y que el prota estaba deseando de metetse en la cama con ellas 🤦‍♀ En libros anteriores el protagonista me había caído bien, pero en este volumen estaba obsesionado con tener sexo cpn todas. Y le daba igual tener novia o no, tuvo sexo con todos los personajes femeninos de la novela.

Dejando a parte lo dicho anteriormente, me pareció una novela entretenida, que te atrapa y bien escrita.

Tercer y último libro que el autor dedica al mundo del fútbol profesional. Da la sensación de que, de no haber fallecido, habría escrito unos cuantos más. Se nota que disfruta con ello y que da rienda suelta a su conocimiento del mundillo. Quizá por eso, la lectura la disfrute más el que tenga conocimiento y gusto por el deporte rey. En cuanto al libro, quizá sea el menos bueno de los tres, pero mantiene el interés y se lee fácil y rápido.

Tercer libro de la serie protagonizada por un entrenador de fútbol de la primera división inglesa.
Scott tiene problemas para encontrar un nuevo puesto de trabajo; hasta que recibe una invitación para reunirse con unos directivos del F. C. Barcelona, que lo quieren contratar como asesor o detective para que encuentre a su último fichaje estrella, que ha desaparecido sin presentarse en la concentración después de las vacaciones.
Una vez más, seguimos a Manson en sus viajes a lo largo de Europa y del Caribe, intentando encontrar al desaparecido.
Manson es el principal protagonista, que intenta seguir sus principios éticos personales por encima de los intereses económicos imperantes en el mundo futbolístico de primer nivel.
Como es habitual en la serie, el autor va salpicando la historia con anécdotas reales de los grandes clubs de fútbol. Anécdotas sobre jugadores, como sus manías, sus ritos, sus rencillas; y también sobre los directivos. Se nota que es un gran aficionado a dicho deporte.

I can see False Nine by Philip Kerr being a popular book. This is the first novel about football out of 2 books. A player goes missing in the new Scott Manson thriller set in the star-studded world of international football.
The term false 9 refers to a player playng in a lone-striker position who drops deep to search for the ball. The intention is to draw opposing central defenders with him and create a diversion for team-mates to move into a spce behind the defensive line and exploit chances to score

The third in the series where the author is having fun in the world of football. Scott Manson is out of work and is persuaded to work with Barcelona to help find a striker that has gone missing. Philip Kerr is obviously enjoying himself, he knows a bit about football (despite supporting Arsenal!) and weaves a story that name drops, takes a dark view of the way football operates and gives us many interesting characters.
Yes it is slightly far-fetched but I think you are not supposed to expect a traditional thriller, you are supposed to try and have as much fun as the author.

Quizás la más floja de las tres noveles, sigue siendo una agradable lectura, ideal para desintoxicar tras la ingestión de algún voluminoso ensayo como es mi caso. Estilo directo y sin pelos en la lengua.

This book sucked.
It was an endless philosophical lecture on humanity, politics, psychology and football as a metaphor for life. And none of it was enlightening It was a snoozefest that contained more similies than a third grader's poem. I'm not sure if Phillip Kerr always writes like this but he has his protagonist get on his soapbox and expound on whatever bullshit theory is marginally relevent to the situation with EVERY single character he meets. I'm not even kidding. If he speaks to them he fucking lays in on some twatish, anti-liberal, cod psychology crap speech. I think Charlotte, the housekeeper, is the only one who escapes one of the dullard's dry diatribes. There's even a soliloquy when there's no other character for Scott to drone on to.

At first, I thought it was all a bit tongue-in-cheek because it was so ridiculous the things Manson would wax lyrical about; feminism, liberalism and racism all within the context of the vulgarity of excess that is top flight football. Especially, when Kerr has the MC reference Kerr himself as a great ghost writer lacking in ego. It's easy to think Kerr's obviously not taking this too seriously. But then why do it? It's not a humorous book. It's just a little mystery heavily coated in football references. What purpose does it serve to have your MC give his opinion on everything?Particularly, when the other character in the exchange invariably ends up saying, "I never thought about it like that," or "Yes, I think you're right." Scott seems to be only intellectual in football. Ugh

Then there is Scott's blackness. At first, I liked that the MC was black. There aren't enough black protagonist out there. But then it started to piss me off cos it seemed his blackness was a shtick. There are several references to the abuse Manson suffered growing up in Scotland but then he doesn't want to talk about race on the BBC cos they aren't recognising his whiteness. I'm not saying every black or blackish person wants to represent all black people but as a mixed race woman I find this character offensive. He is a white man's black man. "Yessah, mista I ain't gots no problems with da racism. Cos I gives as good as I gets.*" Really?! I don't know if Mr Kerr is black but I'd bet 100 to 1 that he's not. And if he is he sure as hell didn't grow up around any black people who come from white majority cultures. I have never, not once, met a black man who thought racism was okay cos he could give as good as he got. Never. It doesn't work like that. Try applying this bullshit psychology to the actuality of growing up and always being aware of your own otherness; a place in which the shame and frustration of not only being called a "nigger" but, also, being treated like one by your fellow countrymen, some of whom were your teachers, local police, employers etc. Then ask yourself if you would find the same discourse and treatment acceptable simply because it's on a football pitch. Hey Phil, here's an insight, people of color can "give as good as they get" off the pitch too. Does that mean racism is okay there too? I think it's weird and wrong that a white man is using a black character as an apologist for racism and political correctness. Even if Kerr is black it's still wrong. There's no excuse for racism.
Either way Scott Manson is a vile, self-centered, elitist, proto-Objectivist white man dressed in black face. I'll end it with this creepy WTF passage,

"...she was the first black woman I had ever been with and I'd liked it; I'd liked it a lot. I don't think there's anything Oedipal about that, but maybe, just maybe I'd fallen for her in a way I hadn't 't expected."

Άσχημος επίλογος για τη σειρά με ήρωα τον Σκοτ Μάνσον...

Το βιβλίο αργεί ΠΟΛΥ να πάρει μπρος. Και όταν τελικά παίρνει... έχει χάσει τα πατήματά του και βολοδέρνει από δω κι από κει.

Στην αρχή του βιβλίου έχουμε ένα ανεκδιήγητο περιστατικό. Ο Σκοτ με υπόδειξη της ατζέντισσάς του περνάει συνεντεύξεις τις οποίες "καίει" μέχρι που καλείται να αναλάβει μια κινέζικη ομάδα. Αποκαλύπτεται όμως ότι ο πρόεδρος που τον δεξιώθηκε δεν ήταν ο legit της ομάδας αλλά κάποιος βαλτός απατεώνας, γιατί ο κανονικός πρόεδρος τον επισκέπτεται και του λέει "φίλε δε με ξέλεις, εγκώ αφεντικό ομάντα Νάιν Ντλάγκονς, εσύ καλό άντλωπο, πούλο τώλα, δε σου κάνω μήνυση γκιατί ντεν είμαι αλκίντι και ξέλω ότι άλλος έκανε τη φάλσα". Ο αναγνώστης ξενερώνει και επίσημα, πριν καν ξεκινήσει η κατεξοχήν πλοκή.

Η κατεξοχήν πλοκή: Ένα ανερχόμενο αστέρι της Παρί Σεν Ζερμέν που έχει δοθεί δανεικός στη Μπαρτσελόνα έχει εξαφανιστεί. Και για κάποιο λόγο (την εξιχνίαση των φόνων στα προηγούμενα δύο βιβλία) οι ιθύνοντες αποφασίζουν να αναθέσουν στον Σκοτ να τον βρει κι να τον φέρει πίσω, δελεάζοντάς τον με μερικά εκατομμύρια (όχι ακριβώς ο ορισμός του ρεαλισμού).
Και ο Σκοτ αρχίζει να ψάχνει, χρεώνοντας στις ομάδες το εξαιρετικά υψηλό κόστος των ερευνών του (πανάκριβα ξενοδοχεία π.χ.), καταφέρνει μέχρι και να φακαμήσει πολλάκις την very horny σούπερ μόντελ πρώην φιλενάδα του εξαφανισθέντος και στη συνέχεια φτάνει μέχρι τη Γουαδελούπη όπου η έρευνα παίρνει αναπάντεχη τροπή.
Ακολουθεί ένα από τα πιο φτηνά πλοτ τουίστ όλων των εποχών (αρκεί να πούμε ότι το έχει χρησιμοποιήσει και ο... Δουμάς) με λίγο δράμα και ασκήσεις ηθικής "στη ζυγαριά" από πλευράς του Σκοτ, για να φτάσουμε σε ένα γλυκερό φινάλε που αφήνει τους πάντες χαρούμενους: Παρί, Μπάρτσα, περιέργως... Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης, ένα Εβραίο 15 ετών (ναι, αυτό που διαβάσατε) και τη μάνα του, ακόμη και τον ίδιο τον Σκοτ που τη γλιτώνει με μόλις 25.000 πρόστιμο για προσβολή του αθλήματος μέσω tweet (γιατί Philip, γιατί;;;;)

Το πρόβλημα είναι ότι σε όλο το βιβλίο είναι διάχυτη η ποιότητα γραφής του Kerr, απλώς... διάσπαρτη. Η ιστορία μπορεί να είναι για τα μπάζα και να μπάζει από παντού, αλλά το χιούμορ και η οξεία πένα του είναι παρόντα. Ενδεχομένως γράφτηκε σε δύσκολη περίοδο της ζωής του δεδομένου ότι 3 χρόνια αργότερα κατέληξε από την επάρατη νόσο (έτσι λένε τον καρκίνο αυτοί που φοβούνται τις λέξεις), αλλά και πάλι, μιλάμε για τα χρόνια στα οποία έγραψε τα The Lady from Zagreb (2015), The Other Side of Silence (2016), Prussian Blue (2017), Greeks Bearing Gifts (2018) και Metropolis (2019, μεταθανάτια έκδοση), καθώς και το εξαιρετικό παιδικό The Most Frightening Story Ever Told (2016)...

To make a long story short: απογοητευτικό, αλλά μάλλον "απαραίτητο" να διαβαστεί από τους fan του Κερ και... του Μάνσον. Έτσι κι αλλιώς, είναι το κύκνειο άσμα του ποδοσφαιρικού Κερ, αν και περισσότερο σαν κρώξιμο ακούγεται...

After the events of the previous book, Hand of God, Scott Manson has found himself out of work and looking for a new managerial position. It's not as easy as he hoped it would be, however, and the promise of a job in Shanghai soon turns out to be fraudulent. Knowing that the press will have a field day over his part in the scam, Scott jumps at the chance of working for Barcelona. The only problem is, it's not as a manager but as a private detective, hired to locate a missing footballer. As his investigations take him to Paris, Antigua and Guadeloupe, he finds himself embroiled in yet another story that the press would love to get hold of...

This is the third book in the Scott Manson series and while it's not vital to have read the others, there are hints in this book that may spoil some of the previous plots for anyone who chooses to go back to read the series from the start. False Nine is slightly different from the other books as there is less of an emphasis on football and more about Scott's investigation. As a football fan who enjoyed reading about the day-to-day workings of London City, I hope that in the fourth instalment, we get to see a managerial return for Scott.

The mystery is an interesting one although I did have an inkling as to what the twist would be quite early on in the book. This did not spoil my enjoyment, however, as it was fascinating to see how Scott dealt with this new information he had discovered. I grew to like Jerome Dumas (the missing footballer) and really hoped that he would be able to tackle his demons and further his career.

I did, however, find myself on several occasions disliking Scott Manson. He has never been a faithful, one-woman man but I found his philandering in this book a bit uncomfortable and had sympathy towards his unwitting girlfriend back home in London.

The ending of False Nine has made the next book a very interesting prospect!

Der 3. Fall von Scott Manson, dem ehemaligen Trainer des fiktiven Premier-League Clubs London City aus der Feder von Philip Kerr beginnt mit Twitter-Zitaten wie z.B. "Manson, du nichtsnutziger Drecksack! Deine beste Leistung bei City war deine Kündigung". Damit ist man sofort wieder drin in der Geschichte um Scott, der wieder ein absolut spannender Krimi aus der Welt des Fußballs ist.
Im letzten Band ist Scott Manson als Trainer von City zurückgetreten, worauf er als arbeitsloser Trainer auf einen neuen Job wartet. Nach einigen gescheiterten Versuchen, unter anderem bei einem chinesischen Club, wird er von PSG und dem FC Barcelona engagiert, um einen jungen, angehenden Fußballstar (der unschwer als Paul Pogba zu erkennen ist), der spurlos verschwunden ist, zu suchen.
Kerr schafft es wieder mal mit seinem schwarzen schottisch-deutschen Ex-Fußballer und Ex-Trainer Scott Manson den europäischen Fußball zu charakterisieren, war es beim letzten Buch die griechische Fußball-Szene, beleuchtet er jetzt die französische Szene, deren Verwicklungen mit ihren karibischen Exclaven, hier besonders Antigua und Guadeloupe, aber auch besonders die Verwicklungen angesichts der Transfersperre Barcelonas und deren Auswirkungen auf andere Vereine, hier besonders Paris Saint Germain. Der verschwundene Fußballer wird von Kerr nicht lächerlich gemacht, obwohl er in einem obzönen Reichtum lebt und als Champagner-Sozialist nicht gerade als Vorbild dient. Der Roman bietet aber nicht nur wegen des Kriminalfalls allerbeste Unterhaltung, durch die Geschichten rund um die Fußball-Szene bietet er viele neue und tolle Geschichten, die man bisher nicht gehört hat. Nicht nur für den Fußball-Fan sind die Geschichten um Scott Manson beste Unterhaltung mit viel britischen Humors...

I'm a big fan of Philip Kerr, enjoying his Bernie Gunther novels, his stand alone novels and more recently this series of Scott Manson novels, of which False Nine is the third.
Scott Manson was the manager of the London City football team but has since resigned his position and is currently unemployed. He falls for a scam thinking he was going to get a managers job in
Shanghai. However he is offered work but not as a manager. Due to his detective abilities which were displayed in the previous novels, he is employed to track down missing footballer Jerome Dumas who is on loan at Barcelona from PSG. Dumas was on holiday in Antigua but failed to return to Spain.
Manson's investigations take him to Dumas's home island of Guadalupe via Paris and Antigua in search of the missing star where he uncovers several clues along the way. However I don't want to reveal too much of the story in case I spoil it for future readers.
I didn't enjoy this novel as much as the previous two as I think I missed Manson's everyday dealings with club and players when still employed as London City's manager. This is more of a straight forward mystery novel although it is still packed with Manson's insights and options on modern day football and also contains a lot of anecdotes about real life footballers.
However for me it is the character of Scott Manson that makes the novel enjoyable. Part German, part black, part Scottish and part cynic, which all adds up to a memorable protagonist.
Looking forward to the continuing series of these novels, of which another is promised and hoping that Scott gets back into management soon in the next instalment.

Funny snappy read which gives an insight into the EPL at all levels including the ghost writing of footie biogs by one Philip Kerr. The plot was a bit ridiculous but I suppose a plot is needed to keep things moving along and give the Mourinho-like 'tec something to do between girlfriends. Move over Bernie (Gunter), Scott's the new kid in town. I now have to read the previous two books in the series. Come on London City! #CityInCrisis.

This was my first book by Philip Kerr in the Scott Manson series that I have read. I enjoyed it, though in my opinion, it wasn't as good as the Bernie Gunther series. The plot was well constructed and it was an interesting story, but did not create the usual tension that I've come to expect from this author. I have given it a 3 star rating - however if I were an ardent football fan, perhaps I would have increased the rating

Shanghai

I like this book as I live in Shanghai for 15 years as bar manager and heard the story's of famous football ers , coming to Shanghai and get rip of and getting paid and having to pay down hotel bills . Also some of the black players getting treated as drug dealers . I've also read the german derivative books there great reading

Das Buch war okay, aber wirklich gar nicht spannend, dabei soll es ja ein Thriller sein. Ich mochte die Charaktere und auch die Idee dahinter. Auch das Ende konnte mich wieder etwas besänftigen, aber die Handlung und das Tempo waren unheimlich schwach. Nun gut, jetzt ist die Trilogie beendet.

This is a huge waste of time. The plot is poor, the investigation is pointless and the ending is mostly tied up with very convoluted conclusions except for the tiniest twinkle that suggests there could be a 4th part in the future.
The first book was enjoyable and the second one was readable but I won't be suggesting this series anytime soon.

The main character, Scott Manson, starts off by facing backlash from saying something sexist, and then we are regularly reminded of Scott's - who potentially is acting as the author's mouthpiece, complete disregard for women's existence by continuing to trivialise and defend the sexist comments. Women footballers only exist in this world as a means to bother Scott, with a pointed comment about Jodi Taylor being a good enough looking girl "if you're into women in a football kit".

oh but don't worry, because "Scott" doesn't really care if anyone is offended, even though as a black character he understands the harm of racism.

There is a conversation between Scott and One of the women he's having an affair with where they agree people are just finding things to be offended by rather than, you know, taking the sexist comments and dismissal of half the population's existence seriously. And thats pretty much how every woman is written. Someone for Scott to have sex with and agree with so that it proves he can't really be in the wrong.

The over all plot seems to be heavily inspired by the man in the iron mask, and that could have been good, but the characters and narrative style ruin it.

it's not a murder mystery, it's not worth reading, and that's that.

En esta tercera entrega de Scott Manson el protagonista empieza la historia sufriendo un incidente en China, y es que tras varias semanas en paro son muchas ganas las que tiene de entrenar a un equipo.
Sin embargo, antes de ello, le llegará una oferta para buscar a Dumas, un jugador del PSG cedido al FC Barcelona que se encuentra en paradero desconocido.
Para seguirle la pista irá a París, donde conocerá a la ex novia del futbolista, bella machina, así como a un banda de maleantes y a un chico de quince años con muchísimo talento con el balón.
De allí volará a Antigua y a Guadalupe, siguiendo el rastro de un Dumas que parece habérselo tragado la tierra.

Después de una primera novela muy emocionante, una segunda en la misma línea pero de menor calidad, esta tercera ya me ha resultado un poco floja y con un argumento menos verosímil que las precedentes.
No puedo decir mucho más para evitar meter la pata, pero me gustó más la primera entrega, donde había una relación más directa con lo que supone el mundo del fútbol en el día a día, ya que el autor te iba contando partido a partido los resultados y los entresijos de un equipo.
