Rate this book
Take time to decompress. Relieve stress. Reduce anxiety. Face the challenges and joys of life with steadiness and grace. That is what A Journey Into Yin Yoga will help you do. Join world-renowned yoga instructor Travis Eliot as he guides you through this contemporary and effective approach for strengthening your mind, body, and spirit. You will learn about the origins and practice of yin yoga, a passive approach in which poses are held for a few minutes to target the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. You will slowly and mindfully transition between poses as you gently allow those tissues to stretch, facilitating better circulation and joint health and improving flexibility. Throughout, you will learn the benefits, contraindications, alignment points, and modifications so you can adjust the poses to your needs and body type. Eliot also explains eight breathing techniques and eight meditation practices for improved focus, reduced stress, and enhanced clarity. Ten ready-to-use sequences allow you to target specific goals, including better sleep, spine flexibility, and healthy hips, knees, and shoulders. A Journey Into Yin Yoga presents over 50 yin yoga poses with stunning photos and detailed instruction, along with inspiring quotes, stories, and interviews from celebrities, doctors, and athletes. You will be inspired to discover your unique path to improved mental and physical strength and balance.

4.5 stars. Great little introduction to many aspects of yoga - history, anatomy and science, yin poses. The use of different names for traditional yoga poses threw me - had to do a lot of flipping back and forth to know what pose was being discussed. Love that Travis Eliot openly says that he doesn't know it all - even says he knows very little - very refreshing to hear someone able to admit they are still learning!

Good summary of various aspects of yoga. However I have heard some contents esp stories from his podcast already, which is a little disappointing

I received this book as an advanced reader's copy due to the high demand of yoga books patrons are requesting at our library. This book was easy to read, easy to follow and the illustrations provided correlate with the text very well making it easier to read and gain knowledge about yin yoga. I also like that there is an opportunity to take a part of the CE exam because we get questions all the time on how to be a certified yoga instructor. Our patrons are sure to love this book! 5 stars!

Another type of approaching yoga, very clearly explained with good pictures of the positions and the various modification to eventually apply to them. Nice book for all the people already interested in yoga or for teacher who want to expand their lessons.

THANKS EDELWEISS FOR THE PREVIEW!

I have practiced yoga for five years, but have not done a lot of yin yoga, so I was rather skeptical about the applicability of this book to my practice. However, the title is somewhat misleading. The book is actually a really good introduction to yoga for anyone, not just yin yoga practitioners. I found the most useful part of the book to be the large photographs accompanied by descriptions of the various poses. Also useful were the chapters on the origins of yoga, the essence of tao, and anatomy of yoga. (As a science editor I read the latter with a particularly critical eye, but he got it right for the most part.) Less useful were the interspersed interviews with famous clients, which felt a little like name dropping. I did like the author's vignettes and stories but at times it appeared that he could not decide among them, especially in the final chapter - using too many illustrations can dilute their impact. Overall, a handy reference for refining your poses and trying new flows in your yoga practice.

A great introduction into yin yoga which I only recently started doing after a few years of faffing around with various other types of yoga. The book explains in plenty of detail for a beginner, possibly even beyond that, to know all aspects of the practice. It's not just a book on poses as it covers the spiritual, meditative, history and more in its pages. Worth a read and one you can come back to.

Reading this book was my first foray into the world of yin yoga....and I'm hooked! Travis Eliot makes it very easy to understand why and how practicing this type of yoga will help me be more flexible, strong, and ready to face my day!

This is a nice introduction to Yin Yoga which is so beneficial to the body.
The book would have been improved with photos included of the modified options. Many 'non yoga' people with stiff bodies would use the modificatons and photos would be extremely helpful.

The book is nice but I recommend it only to people who never done Yin Yoga with Travis. If you do already yin with Travis, you won’t learn anything new. You can skip it.
