Special Delivery #1.5

Hooch and Cake

Rate this book
Where there’s a Randy, there’s a way.

Mitch Tedsoe isn’t an expert on many things, but he’s pretty sure getting married shouldn’t be this hard. A justice of the peace, some hooch, some cake—all Mitch wants is to walk down the aisle with Sam Keller, have a party, and live happily ever after. But every day of wedding planning brings a new set of handicaps, legal, logistical, and emotional…until he brings in his best friend, Randy Jansen.

Randy loves being the third point in Sam and Mitch’s kinky triangle, and nothing would give him more pleasure than to thumb his nose at small-town snobbery and give Iowa the most fantastic gay wedding it’s ever seen. But as his plan comes together and his friends prepare to sail off into the sunset, Randy begins to consider the unthinkable: that maybe, just maybe, he wishes he could have a little hooch and cake of his own.

This novella follows directly after the events of book one in the Special Delivery series.

THANK YOU HEIDI CULLINAN!!!

There's a line in Double Blind, where Randy tells his new boyfriend that he knows Sam Keller-Tedsoe very, very well.

"You might as well know,” Randy said, “that I have fucked him. A lot. Shit, I fucked him on his wedding night.”

This is that story. And it is fucking hot.

Special Delivery is in my top 10 favorites list because of Sam. Because of his desire to be filthy and depraved and have his asshole ravaged by hot, even anonymous, men.

"The problem was, Sam decided later as he trudged home from campus, was that he really wanted kinky. Yes, he wanted love. He wanted to date and hold hands and make the squeamish conservatives that made up his northern Iowa town squirm in their twinsets. Now that it was legal, he wanted to get married. But he wanted hot sex too. Hot sex. He wanted to try it all, every position, every fetish. Well, not every fetish—a lot of them, though. He wanted an orgy, or at least a threesome. All the things about sex that his mother said were bad, all the objectification, all the cold, meaningless encounters—that was what he was after. He didn’t know why. He just knew that he wanted it."

I want Sam to have that too, and in Hooch and Cake I get more of it than my little heart dreamed.

It's a wedding, and true love, and filthy multi-partnered sex.

I heartily recommend it.

Oh, and did I mention it's free? *faints dead away*

THIS . . .

This is why I love Randy. Always have, always will. He is one of the most memorable characters I have ever read. He's scary smart, scary sexy and underneath it all the most romantic man on the planet. Loved this really hard.

Also, read the acknowledgment page, I really love the title too :D!

A free short story with something I very much wanted to see as a sequel to Special Delivery -

I loved a lot of this, and Randy shone in it, with his own manipulative and yet well-meaning and lonely heart. I liked seeing some of the secondary characters from the first book in a deeper and clearer light, and having them become less simple.

Although the sex is sometimes hot, some of the psychological aspects of the BDSM made me a little uncomfortable. I completely felt like it was all done with everyone on board, and having a good time. But it was out on the edge of my "not romantic" zone.

At the same time I am so, so glad Sam found Mitch, and Randy, who make sure he has what he needs and wants safely and with love. A nice addition to the series, but read this after Special Delivery, not as a pre-taste.

::lights cigarette, exhales and takes a deep sip of aged bourbon::

That is one seriously horny and happy read. Mitch, Sunshine and Randy…Randy, Randy…Randy. Holy fuck. That man knows what he's doing and it's so nasty and good. This is the perfect tie to leash Special Delivery and Double Blind together. Fucking fantastic. Great story. Debauched and emotional. Just wow.

This is a kinky fucker's dream cum true.

So I started Double Blind and about a minute into it Ms. Cullinan decided to release Hooch & Cake. Initially, I thought I would wait until I was finished with Double Blind to read it, but about 20ish% into it there's a scene between Ethan and Randy wherein Ethan confronts Randy about being in love with Sam that brought me up short. I didn't get that impression from Special Delivery.

Hot for Sam? Yap!
Cares about Sam (and Mitch for that matter)? Sure.
Competitive with Mitch over Sam and well, everything? Certainly.
But in love with Sam???
description
This is Randy we're talking about here, right?

So… beep beep beep… let's back this thing up and do some investigating.
description

Boy, am I glad I did!

…but there was something special about it being the three of them, the original triad, playing a game.

YES.THERE.IS. After reading Hooch & Cake I think all three of them are a little bit in love with each other. I also think this relationship, such as it is, is maybe the first time Randy's been included and, quite possibly, his first go round with being in love period.

"Where there's a Randy, there's a way."

Sam and Mitch are drowning in a sea of small town provinciality that is sucking all the life and excitement due any couple planning a wedding. Randy moves into town to help plan the wedding and inject some life back into these two. Randy in all his blunt glory sets Delia straight, gives Emma an earful and brings Keith back into the fold. Hell, he even flirts with some straight dudes on the side. Watch out Iowa! Randy should come with a warning label.

Hotness and Mayhem ahead. Proceed with extreme caution.

The sexy times… CHEESE AND CRACKERS!!!!

Nobody rode shame like Sam. Nobody dutifully reported what somebody was doing to them, nobody let themselves be done like a gift. Nobody but Sam. He never showed off, was never saucy. He simply sank into the fuck and let Mitch watch the ride.

*gulps* *steps away for a lil alone time*

Randy is kind of an asshole but, God, I love him. He's crass and uncouth but like the book says he'd "do anything for his friends." And he does. He throws himself into planning and making this wedding a special occasion for Peaches and Mitch. He even planned a leather reception! No fair, Ms. Cullinan! That's hitting below the belt there-center punch straight to my weakness. THEN she delivered the knock out blow when Sam got all dressed up for the occasion…

*woozy drunk stumbling*

There are some feels and poignancy that make me want to dive right back into Double Blind hopeful for Randy's HEA.

Superb follow up to Special Delivery.

This was everything I never knew I wanted. It was amazing; how could it be anything less with these three on the page?

Sam and Mitch getting married? Actually able to SEE their wedding...Le Sigh. These boys once again had my flesh in goose bumps as I joined them on this crazy, sweet and sexy as hell ride to their wedding day. It was so much fun.

Oh Randy, you my dear are the simply the best. Once again you see so much that others don't and you come through with such beauty that you made me cry. I cannot wait to get more of you when I dive into Double Blind and get to see you in a way you swear you won't happen.

This was fun.
This was hot.
This was sentimental.
This was kinkay.
This was perfect.

Oh and I was sent this picture on Valentine's Day and liked it. I read this and thought it kinda fit. Marking it as a spoiler because it is...

This short story is packed with goodies, and they run the gamut from hot kink to sweet emotions. All those goodies, though...maybe too much in such a short story? It feels sacrilegious to even say that, because I loved all of it and I can't imagine cutting any of it, but the scenes sometimes felt more like several unconnected vignettes, almost like side stories. A little chaotic, when I would look for more cohesion.

...does that even make sense outside my brain?

I was going to rate this four stars, but I am so in love with these characters, nothing less than five will do.

Also, this is a great segue into Double Blind.

Side note:
Interesting side stories that didn't go anywhere...

Randy is in rare form here folks.
He runs around Iowa spreading kinky wisdom. And fucking everything.

-That’s my kink: head-fucking.

-But speaking of cock, I’d like to put mine in your butt, baby.

But he's also thoughtful and helpful and yes, perhaps redeemed? Unbelievable.

There's just enough Sam and Mitch to satisfy, and make you tear up and say aww....just so absolutely imperfectly perfect.

And Mitch is the sexiest voyeur ever!

HC said this was free, but to buy one of her other books if we liked it. I'm buying two.

As I expected... I'm Randy's biggest fan now!!

I loved how he cares for his friends Mitch and Sam. Especially for them he comes to Iowa to give them the wedding they deserve.

And their wedding night...

"Look at your husband. Show him how much you love this. Show him."

Sam did. And it was glorious.

I can't wait to read about Randy getting his own Sam for his own!!

The reason my love for Heidi Cullinan and her beautiful books will never die?

She can write a short novella like this, have me simultaneously in tears and turned on, and have it all freaking *mean something.*

Something more than just happy ever after for a few fictional characters. A celebration. A sentiment.

So I was only lukewarm about Randy at the end of Special Delivery, but fell in love with him in Double Blind and this only cemented him as one of my favorite characters.

Randy comes into Iowa like a tornado and saves Mitch and Sam from small town Hell to throw them a wedding they will never forget and bring the spark back into their lives. His love and devotion to Sam and Mitch really shines here, as does the love that they give back to him. I could read about the three of them together all day.

Funny, kinky and sweet, thank you Heidi Cullinan for this gift!

Oh, this is just like cinnamon roll goodness!! (guess what I had for breakfast) -- all swirled up, sweet and spicy, HOT and luscious; with a few nuts sprinkled in.

A quickie -- seductive and sublime, gobbled up and gone too soon, but oh, so, so good.

It took me a while to warm up to Randy previously, but here, he proves what real friends are. That we should all have a Randy in our lives.

Ummm…

Ok, so I might have DNF’d this novella set between books 1 and 2 of the Special Delivery series. And, if I had read this before reading “Double Blind”, I would have.

It’s pretty much all the things I personally hate about reading kinky stuff. My admittedly-judgemental hackles rise and I just don’t understand how and why people have the needs and desires they do. It’s like it just doesn’t compute in my head so when I read it, I have zero emotional connection to what’s happening and more times than not, I just get frustrated and annoyed.

So, having scene after scene of Sam with Randy or with Kyle or with this guy or that guy while Mitch just gets off on watching…well…that just doesn’t do it for me. And because of this, what I think was meant as a nice treat for Cullinan’s Special Delivery series fans, reminded me why I was hesitant to read the series in the first place.

Now, fact is…I have read the series (well, books 1 & 2). And I do have a soft spot in my heart for Sam & Mitch’s relationship. And I can’t poo poo them getting married because THAT makes me happy…happy enough that I can kinda accept the rest of the story.

But, what really saves this story for me is, well, Randy. Randy is my spirit animal. And when you’re that connected to a character, when you love him that much, even the kinky scenes read differently when he’s involved. And I’m happy to read any story where Randy saves the day…where Randy and his BIG heart and BEST intentions come and make things RIGHT for everyone.

So, did I love this? Nah, not really. I was turned off by 75% of it. But the other…ummm…25%? The stuff that was focused on the tenderness and loyalty and love between Sam, Mitch, and my boy Randy (without the physical), that I loved.

Let’s meet in the middle with 3 stars, shall we?

Such a nice gift from Heidi. Sam and Mitch are stymied at every turn trying to plan the best day of their lives together, their wedding. Randy steps in to help and if I hadn't already fallen in love with Randy in Double Blind (Special Delivery, #2) by Heidi Cullinan , this would have gone a long way to redeem him since I thought he was an asshole in Special Delivery (Special Delivery, #1) by Heidi Cullinan .

If you haven't read DB yet, read this first since it explains a lot about where Randy's head is at after SD and makes meeting Ethan so much more meaningful.

Anyway, about Hooch and Cake. All the naughty, sexy things that Sam/Mitch and Randy do are featured and in between the sexin', Randy's growing up and a lovely wedding and reception are planned and executed. Don't miss this, download at your choice of formats at Heidi's website or right here at GR.

Jeez, I still want a Mitch of my own - now more than ever ~pleasepleaseplease~
I adore Sam - God, that boi is sooo sweet ! And Randy ? Well, I didn't like Randy very much after finishing Special Delivery. But...He really grew on me while reading Hooch & Cake. He is a great friend to Mitch and Sam, helps out where he can, and arranges the best wedding Mitch and Sam could have hoped for. I'm looking forward to reading his story in Double Blind.

**** 4,5 Randy stars *****

Where is the guy I disliked at first from #1 Special Delivery??

Randy has really surprised me, and I loved getting to know him better in this. Randy is his own kind of character.
And Mitch and Sam! *heart eyes*
Their arrangement is not for everyone, but I love how they work together, because it works for them. And that is what I love.

A free short story from Heidi Cullinan's website. Here is the link.
It should be read after #1 Special Delivery and before #2 Double Blind. It really shouldn't be read as standalone.
