Driven with the Wind

Rate this book
Doctor Cheney Duvall is one of inspirational fiction s most beloved characters, known for all of her adventures, struggles, successes, and romances. Now Gilbert and Lynn Morris bring the series to New York in Driven With the Wind. Here, wedding bells are poised to chime for their friends but will they? During the month-long journey, Shiloh asks Cheney to be his bride. It is the day she both feared and anticipated. Her answer, however, can only be a refusal. Shiloh is not a believer, and he soon grows bitter over her rejection. Cheney, meanwhile, is devastated that she has allowed herself to fall so fully in love with him. When they arrive in New York, the couple discovers that their friends are having second thoughts about their own marriage. Like Cheney and Shiloh, they struggle by frail human means to solve their problems. A revengeful plan that could ruin Cheney s reputation and medical practice is the final trial that drives them into the arms of the Lord.

I enjoyed reading this book, although the plot wasn't my favourite. I almost felt like crying (bit of an exaggeration) when Shiloh proposed to Cheney and she refused, but I bravely continued and didn't quit the book right then and there. After all, we all know they're going to get together in the end, so if I hadn't been as curious as I was, I wouldn't even have needed to finish it to know how it would end. ;) But anyway.

I have to admit that I didn't enjoy this book as much as the previous one, and I have to admit that I think it was because it wasn't as romantic. ;) :P Lol. But I also think I didn't enjoy it that much was because Shiloh just wasn't himself after he got refused. It actually made me sad to have him throwing away his life like that, and even after he became a Christian at the end, he just wasn't the same. In the previous books, I loved his carefree personality, but when he became a Christian, he sorta calmed down, I guess you'd call it, or something. I obviously was glad he became a Christian, but I was a little disappointed at how he changed so much. Though I guess that is what happens, but I missed his carefreeness. Lol.

So I believe my favourite book in the whole series is Island of the Innocent, but this wasn't bad, it just wasn't exactly what I expected. And I felt sorta sad when I finished it, because I realized that after reading this series for the last two months, I was finally done. I was actually sorta melancholy for a while after, but I got over it soon enough. Now I'll just have to go on to read other good books. ;)

This final book of the series didn't live up to all my hopes for the final book, and it really put me through the wringer with chapters of awkward/painful social situations that I wished would hurry up and get resolved!
There were certain times where I felt things were too contrived to be believed, but of course at this point I was committed to find out what happens and gloss over the weak points.
If not for the fact that I finally got to see the happy ending, I would probably say that this book is the poorest in the series and had the most things I would like to see re-written.

This is the eighth & final book in the Cheny Duvall, M.D. series.

In the prologue, Dr. Cheney Duvall receives a message from Siloh Irons-Winslow that he will pick her up when she gets off work at 7AM. The flowers he sent remind her of the sunrise from Mount Haleakala in Hawaii. She & Nurse Sisk make smaller bouquets to put in the wards. Cheney had come to realize that she loved Shiloh, but also that there were problems. When he come, she offered to let him see everyone. Cheney agreed to travel with Shiloh on the "Brynn Annalea", and Shiloh was honored that she had.

In the story, Cheney Duvall is traveling on the "Brynn Annaleah over the Tropic of Cancer. As she watched, the seamen were struggling to roll the mail royal sale around the yard. Captain Sloane informed her that she was in a dangerous position. As she moved down the ladder, her stomach started to roll.
When she awoke in Captain Sloane's cabin, she was sick to her stomach. She thought about how when she was ill, she wanted Shiloh to care for her.
When they first left San Francisco, neither she nor Nia had been ill since it was smooth sailing, but the second week the winds caused them problems & both of them were sick, and Shiloh took care of them. When they reached Panama City, both Cheney & Nia were carried to the train. In Aspinwall, where the Steen's clipper ship "Maid of the Caribbean" waited for them.
Nia commented that the color of Cheney's clothes made her look better. Nia thought Cheney looked lovely, despite her sickness. Then suggested Cheney use a rose-colored parasol to hide her paleness. Since the "Maid of the Caribbean" was a more businesslike ship than the "Byrnn Annalea", Shiloh had arranged a place where they could hide & not be in anyone else's way. Cheney commented that the last time she saw him he had been hanging from the rigging. Cheney allowed him to play with her fingers, something she didn't normally do. He reminded her that today was her birthday. Shiloh gave her a copy of "Bleak House" by Charles Dickens...they had been reading "Hamlet" & she was sure he was tired of it. They were dreaming in Shakespearean English! Shiloh started talking about his newly found family, something very different for Shiloh. Then he asked her to marry him. Although she said she was honored, etc, but... Shiloh was shocked that she turned him down! He felt that he was a good man. But Cheney knew that he wasn't a Christian. After she left, he took the ring & threw it into the sea.

Probably closer to 3.5 stars, I liked this book and enjoyed the ending, but found it a little bit long winded at times. The story demonstrates the value of family, faith, and forgiveness. Cheney DuVall and Shiloh Irons-winslow go through a great deal during the story, but grow through the experiences. I would consider reading other Cheney DuVall books. This was my first.

The travelers return to New York, but Cheney and Shiloh become estranged. Cheney won't agree to marry, because Shiloh's not a Christian. They both love each other terribly, and the book details their sufferings through an engagement of friends But God is good and...well, no spoilers here.

This is one of the oddest books I’ve ever read. It seemed to be all over the place and not going anywhere.

It had a happy outcome, but still seemed incomplete.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Cheney Duvall MD series by Lynn and Gilbert Morris. My favorite in the series was #7 (Island of the Innocent) . . . that one had such a good ending that really, the series could have ended there. So as I picked up #8, I wondered how it could possibly add anything of interest to the storyline. I was in for a good surprise.

"Driven with the Wind" saw several relationships challenged and strengthened. It gave more background and depth on one of the main characters, Dr. Devlin Buchanon, so that the reader gained a much better understanding of him as well as why his relationship with the very wealthy Victoria Steen DeLancie worked. I enjoyed that aspect of the story the most in this particular book.

As with all the other books in the series, one or more of the characters got into difficult circumstances so there was an element of suspense. I enjoyed the authors' use of humor, too, mostly via the interactions of the various characters. Descriptions of medical knowledge at the time were also quite intriguing.

The series as a whole was very entertaining and engaging, taking the reader to many places in post-Civil War USA including New York City, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Hawaii. The particular culture of each location at the time seems to have been well described, and the characters at times jumped right off the pages and felt like real people.

Underlying the entire story line was the fact that God does have a plan for each of us, and we are at our best when we allow our lives to line up with His plan for us. That is where we find true, deep peace.

Well now that Shiloh has a family and some wealth he thinks that he is now able to provide for Cheney. What Shiloh doesn't understand is that Cheney never wanted money etc. she knows that having a relationship with Shiloh would only cause her hurt because he is not a Christian. This sends Shiloh into a tailspin of dissipation and misery. Dev and Victoria are also having communication issues and their engagement may be off. Dev has a secret and is unwilling to burden Victoria with it. Now we move on to the last 3 books of the series which are actually the beginning of a 3 book series. Only book 2 is available on Kindle which is weird! Anyway, a lot happens in Driven With the Wind to wrap up Cheney and Shiloh's getting together. As always there is some excitement, a couple of new characters and always always Cheney's solid walk with the Lord.

A tough book to read.

To love when its wrong and to get over that love is very tough. To do it when you are constantly thrown together with that person is even tougher.

To find the truth out about ones family and then share that knowledge with your currently family and HOPE that they accept this new knowledge and ALL that comes with it is also tough.

Both Cheney AND Dev face these things in this book. But its Shiloh, in all his pride and thoughts of being a good person, who faces the biggest challenge of the three~~~keep running and face damnation, or finally, submit to God's redeeming love....

This book is about Shiloh Irons-Winslow asking Cheney Duvall to marry him. However, Cheney can not decide whether or not to go through with it. Meanwhile throughout this whole book Bain Winslow tries to seek revenge against his cousin Shiloh who is heir to the Winslow holdings. He tries to ruin his cousin and Cheney as well. I really couldn't get into this book at all. It never really caught my attention and I found it very difficult to read.

Very well written! Kinda sad ' cause Cheney is in love with Shiloh but ca't marry him because he is not a Christan. Shiloh doesn't take Cheney marriage denial well an wallows himself in grief. Thinking it will numb his grief, Shiloh drowns himself in alcohol an gambling. In the end, Shiloh becomes a Christian a marries Cheney.

This series gotta be why slow burn is my fave

Doesn’t hit as hard as it used to but that’s ok because I’m a different person now but I do still have the fond melodies

Only dumb thing about it is stolid miscommunication trope of people getting engaged/married without talking about their feelings about kids I hate it

Finally, a bit or resolution that started 8 books ago!! It seems some of the characters actually face their situations and do something about them. A romance series that should please the Christian believers, and hopefully nonbelievers as well.

Bittersweet and heart wrenching but an appropriate end to the couples courtship.
