An unnamed protagonist shares with the reader the stages of the lone apple tree that he calls his. Although it supports the insects, birds, mammals, lichens, and moss this tree is special because it's thick and gnarled, but continues to live on through season after season.

Another lovely science/nature book by Parnall. (Dedication to Byrd Baylor.) Fortunately available on openlibrary.org, if you're interested in seeing his style when he's not doing the spirit of the desert books with his best collaborator.
