This title was first published in 2000: August Jaeger was one of Elgar's most devoted supporters and was the subject of one of Elgar's most inspired movements, the Nimrod variation. This study explores the correspondence between Jaeger and the famous English composer.
The author has given us a much deserved book about one of the unsung heroes of the English musical renaissance, A J J Jaeger. It’s not an overstatement that the world might not enjoy the music of Elgar today were it not for the friendship and encouragement of Jaeger, but it’s less well known about the help he gave to others, including the young Anglo-African Coleridge-Taylor.
This book is very well written and sourced with letters and biographical information. As Jaeger faces the end of his long battle with tuberculosis, his letters become more painful to read. Certainly a man who had the great gift of Friendship to others. My heart will probably swell a little more than usual next time I hear the Nimrod variation.
