Carey Price: How a First Nations Kid Became a Superstar Goaltender

Rate this book
Twenty years ago, Carey Price was flying hundreds of miles across the country so he could play on the nearest organized hockey team. Today, he is the highest-paid goalie in the NHL. But he's never forgotten where he started. The son of an NHL draftee and the chief of the Ulkatcho First Nation, Carey got his start on skates as a toddler. The natural athlete went on to become the top amateur player in Canada in 2002, getting drafted fifth overall by the Montreal Canadiens three years later. Now one of the most recognizable figures in hockey, Carey credits his success to his community of Anahim Lake, where hard work and commitment often face off against remoteness and cost. Throughout his incredible career, he's taken every opportunity possible to encourage all young people, especially those who share his Indigenous background, to follow their dreams.

This is a remarkably well-researched biography of Carey Price that will be of great interest to middle-grade readers. There’s even enough to tempt and intrigue any adults who might be reading along!

A lot of information is packed into this book, making it suitable for avid readers, sports fans, and even reluctant readers. The author describes Price’s indigenous heritage and childhood in remote British Columbia, the close relationship between family members, his love of hockey and the development of his skills as a goalie. Price’s career in hockey from minor-league games to the NHL, as well as his participation in the Olympics, World Cups and Championships are also described. It’s not just a list of achievements, however—over 16 chapters, Catherine Rondina captures the various struggles that Carey Price has overcome to become the star goalie he is today. By examining several aspects of Price’s life, and by weaving in quotes from newspaper and magazine interviews, Rondina gives the reader a better sense of Carey Price the person, and not just Price the goalie.

Catherine Rondina explains many hockey terms within the book, which is useful for readers who may be new to the game or unfamiliar with hockey’s unique vocabulary. As part of the Carey Price story, she also explains how players are selected for the NHL and the farm system teams use to give players greater experience. This will be of interest to those kids who may not be interested in player statistics, but are fascinated by how the system operates.

The extra material included in the book add a lot of extra value to this biography. Amazon’s “Look Inside” feature shows just one of the many photos that are found within this book. In addition to the usual pictures of Price, other photos show Anahim Lake and its school, various ceremonies, museum displays and historical NHL images. Sidebars include interesting tidbits of information (e.g. How goalies get injured; fathers, sons and grandsons who played in the NHL). A glossary, a list of career highlights, and an index round out the extra content.

Carey Price is a living hockey legend. He has been the Montreal Canadiens' goalie for many years, and he was instrumental in Team Canada's gold medal win in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

For those reasons alone, kids who might otherwise be reluctant to put down their hockey sticks and pick up a book will be attracted to this biography of Canada's greatest goalie. This book is absorbing and easy to read. All the interesting hockey stats will keep fans turning the pages.

But this book is about much more than hockey. It is the story of hard work and perseverance through obstacles, such as the ankle injury that Carey suffered in December 2008. It is the story of a man who learned to manage the stress of jeers and booing from Habs fans in the 2009-2010 season, when he was not performing well due to his injury, and how eventually those fans were cheering in the stands for him in the next two seasons, when he was also invited to be in the All-Star Games. It is the story of a man who values his family, connects with his heritage, and helps his community.

This book will not only attract and hold the attention of young hockey fans, but it will also inspire them to emulate Carey's hard work, perseverance, and generous spirit, so that they can pursue their own dreams and achieve their own goals, whether on or off the ice.

Catherine Rondina made this book and it is one of my favorites, ad it is called Carey Price. This book is about hockey ad one of the best players to play the sport. In the book Catherine talks about a little boys journey to becoming one of the greatest goalies in the game of hockey. Carey price grew up in Anahim Lake, British Columbia, he started off as a toddler playing o the pod with his friends. He was the Chief's son of the first nation, and he gathered all of his fame in Montreal that is were he played, and he has been taking every opportunity he can that involved hockey. Carey Price grew up around hockey and he knew what he wanted to do by the moment he first stepped out on that pond when he was a toddler, he has loved the game ever since and always will. Carey Price is own playing for the Montreal Canadians, and he is living a great life right now.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story up someone's success, ad how hard they worked at life to get where they are. I really liked this book because I really like hockey to and his story makes me want to work harder to become what I want to be.

Carey Price grew up in Anahim Lake British Columbia playing hockey on a frozen river in his back yard. His parents took him to the closest town (3 hours away) to join a hockey league and from there he moved to Pasco, Washinton to live with a family and play for an amateur league.

This book tells the story from his humble beginnings up to the Olympics and the NHL. Has a table of contents, glossary, index and highlights from his life. Black and white photography.

A brief, yet thorough biography that emphasizes not only Price's success as a goaltender, but his success off the ice as well. The book's clarity and length are ideal for young readers, as is its trim size - it actually feels good to hold. With just the right amount of interesting facts and stats, this book is appealing for all sports fans.

Sorry but this book is just a rehash of information from other sources. What does “I was not able to interview Carey Price for this book,” even mean?
