I have just filled in the City of birth section with Raunds Northants which was where I was born. This is a monumental exaggeration. Raunds would struggle to qualify as a town. I always reckoned it was the last stop before the local bus service fell off the edge of the known universe, but it was a great place to grow up. I first left Raunds to go to secondary school in Wellingborough, a ten mile journey which took about three quarters of an hour as the bus meandered around picking up children here and there. One of the biggest influences on me after 'O' levels was music. This was the time of the Beatles and the Stones and every young lad wanted to be in a group and achieve fame and stardom. Having no ability to play anything more complicated than a blues harmonica, but having a facility with electronics and a voice well suited to rock and blues tunes I became lead vocalist and repairer of amplifiers and guitar leads for the Road Runners one of a number of local bands. Coming from East Anglia which in my youth was the biggest aircraft carrier America had I spent many happy hours on USAF bases in our area which began my friendly attitude to the States. Trained as a teacher It took me all of five years and the imminent birth of our first child to realise the pay was rubbish and sell my soul to Mammon by becoming a salesman.
Although I delved into the sixth Sprocket saga, it suffices as a standalone novel: a down-to-earth YA Sci-Fi/Fantasy founded by those who live at 7 and 7A Pudding Founders Lane and Dragon World. I easily became acquainted with each of the characters. Human: The Fearsome Four: Adolescents, Ava, and her cousins Victoria, Kate, and Gil. The Friends: Sprocket, the scrap dragon; Blaggard, the crow; Mrs. Mumbly, a bull terrier). Plus, the author provides a detailed list of characters and places he delineates for the reader.
While the book could use an overall editing swipe, it did not deter me from enjoying this cleverly-written story with just the right amount of humorous character sketches for the “baddies”. The Fearsome Four and animal friends are endearing. The fast-paced plot is plausible, given the sci-fi rationale behind the “time vortex” when a stopwatch finds its way into the hands of petty thief, George Albert Hastings, who uses it for his own monetary gain, thereby threatening the universe.
I highly recommend this delightful book. Sprocket’s favorite victuals of sump oil and battery acid tart with rust sprinkles whetted my appetite for the other Sprocket sagas.
