Guide Dogs: From Puppies to Partners

Rate this book
Friendly and informative, this guide looks at the breeding, raising, training, and assessment of young guide dogs, as well as what happens when they are matched with their handlers to become working guide dogs. It explains how guide dogs are trained to make life easier for people who are blind or who can't see well enough to get about safely. Also described is the history of dogs that were trained to guide blind people from as far back as the early 1800s. Children also will meet several guide dogs in action and learn the stories of special dog and owner relationships.

I read this with my 9 year old son as part of the NSW Premiers Reading Challenge 2010. My son really enjoyed it, as he's quite the dog lover. It was quite interesting seeing the process that a guide dog goes through in their training and it is much more involved than I realised. I found it more like an infomercial for the Guide Dog Association- not that that's a bad thing, and I'm likely to give them some money because of it. I do know that a breeding female dog is technically a bitch, and could have coped with this being mentioned once or twice, but the first few pages are wall to wall bitch usage. It seemed somewhat over the top for a kids non-fiction book.
